 football fans... what a bunch of blinkered spackers

This is what he did:

Ran the ball out of play for no reason
Played two, possibly three crosses straight into the first man from promising positions
Missed a good chance
Missed an absolute sitter
Gave an unnecessary free-kick away

That's it. Yes he 'found space'... er, it was the last twenty minutes of a game against a crap team desperate for an equaliser.

He's probably a good player, but he was clearly absolutely terrible today.

I hope this helps

Have to sadly agree here. Thought his passing was dreadful and held onto the ball too long. Same opinion I had of him during his last outing.

I love it. Over the summer all the reports were saying he's a forward. He misses a few chances and now they consider him a midfielder.

He has never been a forward, always a winger and always will be.

ps. yes i've followed him in the french league. ds.

Has a bit of David Bellion about him to me...hopefully he becomes a much better player for us than his french counterpart did though...

I should stress when i say he 'has a bit of David Bellion about him' i mean in terms of his style of play and dribbling technique...not in terms of ability and natural talent i think hes far superior to Bellion in that respect...

I agree.

He is very raw, has speed but runs and plays like a drunk giraffe on LSD. He actually played better without the ball today. He was tracking back and cutting the angles down well considering it was his first game.

spot on

To be fair, Obertan himself will be disappointed with the debut. However, he has shown enough talent in a few games to be a valuable member of the squad.

To be fair when he missed his first big chance, he s just been on the pitch for a few minutes ... it might have come a bit too early for him and I think that might have influenced the rest of his performance.

Let's hope he recovers (mentally)

Gab: I Was Nervous But Kept Encouraging Me

Gabriel Obertan has made a bright start to his Manchester United career, putting in a good performance against Barnsley in the week and impressing during his half hour run against Blackburn yesterday.

With ten minutes left to play and the game still at 1-0, Obertan had the opportunity to make it a dream start when Valencia presented him with a chance to score from five yards out. Somehow, he managed to miss though, something he is frustrated about.

“I was disappointed to miss my chance, but I was very fit and it all went well because we won in the end,” said Obertan. “It’s been four months now that I have been injured, so it was a good début. I ran hard and tried to do my best. I think I need a bit of rhythm; a few games to be fully fit. It’s going better and better and there’s no reason to end it. I think I’ll be better after a few games.”

Obertan reckons fellow countryman, Patrice Evra, has made his life easier since joining the club and he hopes to get in the first team squad more often.

“I was a bit nervous, but after a few minutes it was gone,” he added. “I really enjoyed the game and Pat Evra was just behind me encouraging me, so it was very good. With Pat it has been easier. I feel like I’m here for many years now so it is good to be here and I’m just enjoying it. I’ll just keep working hard to be in the squad and we’ll see what the manager will do.”

Sir Alex Ferguson has defended Obertan’s miss and reckons the Frenchman settled well in to the team.

“Gabriel was a bit nervous when he came on,” said Ferguson. “It was only his second game in seven months, so you have to put it in perspective. But then he settled down and did well. He is not happy with himself and that is a good thing.”

Give the lad a rest, I cant believe some of the reactions on here, the lad has been out for around four months, has come to a completely different league and is already getting slated, I have been impressed with him so far has shown small glimpses that he could be come a very usefull player for the club, just needs games at the minuit to get his sharpness

Ok i'm going to say it, Nani would have finished the chances Obertan got.

But he wouldn't have been in the position for it, most likely.

Obertan's movement to get himself into position for two crosses and that one on one was incisive and far more direct than any of Nani's runs.

Obertan clearly likes to make runs off the ball, Nani and (to a lesser extent) Valencia make runs towards the ball.

He showed plenty of promise.

Jesus Christ

August: Nani is the new Ronaldo
September: Nani is shit, sell him
October: New guy comes in, has a slightly iffy debut...Nani would have scored the chance he missed

Was at the match yesterday and you could tell he was nervous and hence a mistake or two but this lad will be a big player here in a short space of time

People seem to focus on his Bellion like dribble(which he did once on his first play), and his two misses and completely ignore everything else.

I thought it was hilarious when he dribbled the ball out with his first dribble. Should have scored as well, but certainly looks promising and fugly

Just how I feel. Nani rarely gets goals from being in the right place at the rigth time. It's usually a hard hit shot from range.

His finishing is a bit Forlanesque, even if you're nervous how do you miss the whole goal from a few yards out??? Hopefully it was because of the previous injury, because I really was impressed with the movement and the way he got into positions, even though it was after we scored, so we had space to attack. Speed was also top class.

To be honest, Obertan was more incisive in half an hour than Nani had been for the whole game up to that point.

Anyway, the thing with him is that he showed real potential. Yes he missed a great chance and hit a few bad crosses, etc. - but we must remember, the guy is only playing his second big game in 7 months - he's going to be very rusty and not fully up to speed yet.

Give him a few more games under his belt, and he is going to be exceptionally dangerous for us. He showed good movement off the ball, good pace, got into good positions and wasn't afraid to take on his man with some nice dribbling. The crossing, shooting and end product will come with minutes on the pitch.

I'm just very excited because he does look a real prospect. Hopefully his back injury is behind him now and he can keep developing under SAF.

From the little that I have seen of him, he seems to have a good
team ethic about him, always looking to bring others into play if
he is not in an excellent position to do so.
I say give him a few weeks to get up to speed and I bet he will
make Nani very worried about his place in the squad.

Obertan played with a lot more space than Nani because the game had changed by then. That's one reason why substitute forwards often look good. I'd say he's worth another half hour against CSKA.

In the circumstances I was very encouraged with Obertan's debut league performance. Plech makes some valid points but the potential was there for all to see. Wouldnt go so far as to say he was miles better than Nani at this stage, but the difference is he is brand new whereas Nani is in his third season. Judged on those terms I feel more optimistic about his prospects than Nani's at this stage (although I havent given up hope for Nani yet. SAF will coax a great footballer out of him yet, Im sure of it.)

You've summed up most peoples attitude on here, who isnt on would have done better than who is there! may as well go the whole hog and say bobby charlton would have scored!

 - as opposed to?
Keep laughing. I'm sure you're still laughing at people who rate Ruud eh?

He showed good pace, good movement, a team player and has a footballing brain. But he didn't score a hattrick, so he must be shit.:wenger:

A sitter is a sitter no matter the game.

He'll come well, just shaky.

Well get used to it. He isnt much of a finisher. Not just nerves, its just an area of his game where he can improve a lot over time. Still, we shouldnt expect all young wingers to be good finishers just because Ronaldo became a deadly goalscoring winger. Obertan can offer a lot to the side without being someone who is likely to finish most of the chances that come his way.

It's that off the ball movement which is one of Nani and Valencia's greatest weaknesses. With their speed they should be getting in behind the defender on a consistent basis, but rarely do because they sit in front of him until recieving the ball and only then trying to beat the defender with the ball. They should be making runs in behind the defender for our other players (Rooney, Berbatov and Giggs are all fantastic at this) to slide a pass through to as they breaks the offside trap. Valencia does seem to be improving a bit over the last few weeks so let's hope that as he settles he'll start doing it on a regular basis.

Obertan has impressed me so far with his movement and has already shown signs of being better than the other two, but we'll have to see a fair bit more of him to see exactly how he stacks up.

Ignore Ronaldo's skills. Ignore his finishing ability and his heading. We should sit our wingers (and strikers for that matter) down and force them to watch videos of Ronaldo's off the ball movement. He had the best off the ball movement for an attacker that I've ever seen, and if our other wingers can become half as good as him in that regard they will be far more effective.

I'm excited by this lad. Yes he missed one or two sitters today but christ, the lad's making his debut and in front of 76,000 people. A few more games, more confidence and he'll start to bury them chances as I thought he got himself into some good positions today. He's very direct with the ball and I thought he had some great link-up play with Evra.

Too early to tell for sure, but hopefully the lad will be fantastic for us.

This. He was, understandably, very nervous and that was obvious. I think he'll come good.

Good to have got that miss out of his system, could have been against Chelsea et all and could have been a game defining goal.

the worst miss I ever saw was Diegos in america. You remember Diego Forlan? He missed a lot and look at him now..

Anyone can miss a sitter. If he looks to blast it there's more of the goal to hit. When you look for a corner, your reducing the target pretty much and he ended up scuffing it. it can happen if your timing is a bit off

Looks like a handy player to be honest. A diamond in the rough, still got alot of developing left. Should be an interesting season this, plenty of youngsters really pushing for first team spots.

I thought he did well. I'll put that glaring miss down to a lack of sharpness after being out injured for so long. If he had of put that away everyone would have been raving about him.
