Gaa 2013

My poor wife is in a state of depression. I was surprised monaghan won tbh but it was probably deserved especially when you should have got a penalty / goal in the first half. How that free at the end wasn't given against your keeper baffled me though.

Good Luck for the final though. I'll get on board the Farney bus that day.
The little fella Dunne up top for Cavan didn't do great today. He was kept quiet but his radar was off on the tight angles too. He kicked some great scores against Fermanagh so I was a little disappointed.

Kildare were amazingly shite today. Seriously bad, and its hard to know how good we actually were.

Brogan worried me today tbh. Wasnt close to his best, and I think we need him hitting near top form if we are to go all the way. Good thing Kilkenny, Connolly and Mannion seem to be scoring though, and at least Brogan can play below par and we still hammer Kildare.

Meath didnt look great, and apart from them being game-raisers, it should be a handy enough final.
The forward interplay was very good for Dublin. They seem to just know where each person wants the ball. The fitness levels and workrate were outstanding too. Paul Flynn was class for me and young lads look great but the strength on the bench in Rock, Bastick and Nolan is amazing for me. Nolan and Rock were class when they came on.

Kildare were poor but they blooded a lot of young lads and I think that was a clever move by McGeeney because the young lads will see the standard they have to reach to play at that level. Oh and Meath Dublin games are never handy. I expect Meath to raise their game again. Bray didnt fire yesterday but he can be a game winner on his day and Sheridan is way off form but again he can be a handful. They seem to be getting the defence right again and will need some luck but never right them off. As the Meath lads and a few of my Westmeath friends used to say "Ten point lead you wont beat Meath!"

The Dubs will as usual piss Leinster. Losing a final or two would be a benefit to you at this point. Leinster and Connaught are seriously devoid of any real competition.
When has Leinster last been competative though? It's really Dublin or Meath. Same with Connaught it's Mayo or Galway mainly. You could argue that they have been devoid of competition since the first championship.

All true.

To be played on July 6/7:
Clare v Laois
Derry v Down
Roscommon v Tyrone
Galway v Waterford
To be played on July 13/14
Leitrim v Armagh
Longford v Wexford
Cavan v Fermanagh
Kildare v Louth

I'm a bit disappointed with the draw tbh. It's a game we should win, but the third year in a row we've been drawn away to Roscommon so going by the principle that every dog has it's day I'm a wee bit worried. They're not s bad a side as they were against Mayo. I'm also heading up the north this weekend so I'll miss another game on my doorstep. Sucks to be me this week.

Of all of them only Derry V Down seems interesting. I don't remember who said it but an early start to the championship in a champions league format would be best with home and away games and then the top two out of the groups going into a final 16 with the games all played at croker or a better placed/appropriate stadium suited to the fixture. With seedings based on the league placement you could at least have 4 or 5 competative groups as opposed to the borefest of the early provincial rounds. Out of all the provincial finals the only really competative one will be Kerry V Cork. I'm going to regret that..........

If you're going to tell me that Mayo putting up cricket scores against shite Galway and Roscommon teams or Dublin hammering Westmeath have been good games you're on another planet. I'd take a close Ulster game any day, and honestly if Tyrone play any of those three teams I'd expect them to put up a decent score too.

Turns to...

What a difference a draw makes!

You're right about most of that. Actually using the league for seeding the championship could make that more interesting too. The betting for picking 4 provinces won't be too hectic.

Look, I still expect us to win and win comfortably but I'm just worried we could get caught being cocky. In fairness we put up a huge score at the weekend and are in decent form, albeit we have our normal huge injury list.

Ah yeah mate, I just couldn't resist throwing the two of those together!

As much as I'd like to say the Rossies have a chance, they really don't. I may be repeating myself but I am predicting very little unpredictability this year, at least until August.

Yes, as sentences go, that one makes no sense.

 Fantastic mind bending sentence!

I'm only annoyed I'll not get to the game and I doubt it'll be on the telly.

Must say, Dubs are looking awesome.... well done to London

Ah I dont know. How often do they waltz through Leinster only to meet a tough challenge in the quarters of the Semi final and not have adequate preparation.

They won't be alone when it comes to counties waltzing through provinces untested this year though. Donegal who look like they are playing below par will probably have marched through Ulster without a serious test, Mayo the same in Connacht. Munster with Cork and Kerry it's hard to know I suppose. So far though Dublin look like a team that's seriously prepared especially on the fitness side of things and going by the high scores their knocking up, in front of the posts as well.

I'd argue that both Tyrone and Down put it up to Donegal to a degree. With a stronger ref in both games Donegal would have been under serious pressure, and while I'm sure they will piss the final it's not quite the same as Mayo or Dublin.

Yeah the Mayo side are untried too but Kerry and Cork is always a good test for both and the loser then goes straight into the back door games having upped their own game significantly. Ulster for me is the most open province with potentially 3 teams having a great chance. I wouldnt have picked Monaghan as one of the 3 but fair play to them. I do think Dublin looked very good against Kildare but I dont want them to become complacent. It will be interested to see how Gavin manages the players and the hype in the next round. Meath will not be pushovers.

Biggest weekend in the GAA so far coming up with two what should be cracking games of hurling.

Saturday 7pm - Kilkenny v Tipperary playing in front of a 24,000 sell out crowd that'll be practically on top of the players on the pitch such is the way Nolan Park is set up it'll be a real cauldron and as Daithi Regan said it's going to be all out war. Hard to believe one of them will be out of the Championship and we only in the 1st week of July yet. Impossible to call it.

Sunday 4pm Croke Park - Dublin v Galway for the first time ever in a Leinster final, Galway being the defending Leinster Champions. Not to sure how this one will fair out either, Dublin are on a role with this being their 4th or 5th weekend out and Galway with feck all championship hurling done yet. I'd be fearful Galway if they even turn up could end up getting caught cold in the opening 10 or 20 mins and if that did happen and Dublin had a bit of a lead built up, I wouldn't be to confident of Galway coming back against that Dublin team. If the Galway team that hammered Kilkenny in the same match this time last year turns up though and Canning is on fire I can only see a Galway win, as always Canning will be instrumental and if Dublin can't keeps tabs on him he'll destroy them on his own. It'll be interesting to see how the Galway lads fair as well out with all the rumors flying around here about 2 sets of club players not pulling together in the camp. It would be a right fecker if there was shit going on within the camp and an All-Ireland title seriously there for the taking now.

C'mon Galway boi!

There are rumours surrounding the Tipp team too. Aparently there were similar killings at club level in the championship. Looking forward to both these games. I think Leinster needed a non Kilkenny final and hopefully Kilkenny will get a kick from the Dublin defeat and look to get back into the swing of things. Galway and Tipp need big performances with run of the mill games so far this year.

While I agree Kildare were appalling the Dubs looked great, and not just the 15, the standard on the bench looked great. The younglads were among the stars, so maybe they might fade later, but there is experience on the bench to come in. I've not seen many of the others this season, have you seen one play better than Dublin?

No I thought the link up play of the forwards was brilliant against kildare and despite Alan Brogan being out and Bernard slightly off sorts the rest of the side really looked outstanding. Sure the lad Rock who came off the bench would be a starter in nearly any side other than Dublin. AT the back Brennan and Cooper stood out but I have my doubts about Brennan's temperament. You're right though they had a very impressive performance against a good division 1 side.

All that said, this does have a familiar hubris-like feel to it. Which is all good, as Dublin getting hammered in a semi final after a cocky summer is as good as any outcome in terms of excitement in the championship.

It's shaping up to be a fantastic weekend in the hurling. Tipp v Kilkenny will be unreal, and possibly Dublin v Galway also. I was gonna go to Croker on Sunday as I was offered a ticket but €35 is a bit steep to be honest. I paid that for 12 hours of golf last week.

I don't really follow GAA -- though I'd like to get into it -- but am I right in presuming that everyone feckin' hates Dublin?

Yep. They are the team most universally hated. The only time they arent hated is when your local rivals are playing them. Eg Louth fans will be happy to see the Dubs give Meath a good beating tomorrow.

Galway 1-12 Waterford 0-14 in the gaelic.
Clare 1-32 Laois 0-15 in the hurling.

The hatred for Dublin seems to be only in the football. The hurling county supporters seem to have a lot of time for the Dublin hurlers, their supporters and their overall set up, and after their own counties wouldn't begrudge Dublin any success. I know if they beat Galway tomorrow I'll be like a thundering cnut for the guts of a fortnight about losing but I wouldn't begrudge Dublin their Leinster title either.

I'm not getting my ticket until tonight (Packie's dropping it up to the house after work) but as far as I know that price is for the stands and if it is it's great value.

The last time I was in Croke Park was for a U2 concert. That says it all. I'd watch the GAA (the hurling moreso) but I have no real interest. My mate is a Galway man and asked me to go with him. Decided against it in the end.

Half time and all square, Tipperary 1-6 : 0-9 Kilkenny

Tipperary came out of the blocks first and went 4pts up but Kilkenny who looked like the more solid of the two teams came back into with 4 unanswered pts. That was a lovely point from Callinan for Tipp there at the end. Brilliant game so far though.

Joke system, joke that there was only 1 minute of added time. But really Tipp were lucky they finished within 3. Imagine the Wexford hurlers at home watching that thinking this was to reach the same stage as they were at having beaten... Carlow.

Kilkenny looked deadly in the last 20 minutes of that 2nd half. The hoovered up everything that was landed in on top of their back line and area of their team I was saying looked fierce dodgy so far this year with all the goals they were leaking. With the way they hurled this evening and with Shefflin back it's looking like they're going to take some beating again this year. Hard to believe Tipperary are gone though, there could be worrying times ahead for them now with a fair few of their main men in their thirties, retirement could be on the cards for a few of them. A few new forwards wouldn't go a stray either.

Roscommon got some pride back against Tyrone, even if they never looked like winning it. Only followed the live updates though, so maybe I'm wrong at that one. Apparently their tactics were unbelievably negative though.

The big one for me this weekend was the Waterford footballers coming so close to upsetting Galway. I have a couple of mates playing for that Waterford team and they'll be devastated while on the lash in Galway tonight, but fair fecks to them, almost produced one of the shocks of the year.

Very good first half, fell to pieces a bit when the pressure came on. Cork could have levelled it at the death in a game they were never in.

That's me done in this thread for the year anyway. First week of July and we have ne'er a team left in either championship.

Even fecking London are still in the championship.
