Gaa 2013

No, but why mention the greatest ever to play the game? The guy is a great player and deserves to be acknowledged as such. See your new tagline by way of explanation. True, but still an unnecessary slight.

The best players do go missing for games on end by the way.

Jaysus, moses, will you relax, man? I was referring to the discussion we had a few weeks ago in this thread when Brogan was heralded as being one of the "all-time greats". I am not criticising the chap at all, just that I think he's not in that elite band of players. Yet. (Although I doubt he'll ever reach the heights of Cooper, Fitzgerald, Keaveney, Canavan, Tompkins, to name a few.)

For what it's worth, here was where the discussion started, moses. I don't think I was being too unkind there and (so far) have been proved largely right about judging Brogan in Championship fare rather than League form, when teams are juggling serious pre-season training with games in quick succession.

Excellent footballer, but he has a bit to go before he's mentioned in the same breath as Cooper, Keaveney and Connor. My comments on Brogan today were solely related to these "all-time greats" discussion that we had, and not at all a personal slight on the man. I quite like Brogan and love watching him in the groove, but even the most ardent Blue would admit that he's not been himself for the past while.

 Love the tagline!

I had to read back over that discussion to see if I said anything I nw disagree with and I don't think I do. I said in my time watching he's one of the most natural scoring forwards and I'd rate him over almost all forwards bar 2-3 over the past 20 years. Hard to argue with that even with his dip in form.

He's a fecker, isn't he?

I agree, to an extent. Brogan was brilliant for Dublin from around 2009-11, but he has not been top class in championship games since. He carried the Dubs in 2010 and was rightfully Footballer of the Year. However, I felt he underwhelmed the following year (despite his All-Star) and was even worse again in 2012. His 2013 campaign to date has also been less than convincing, and nobody batted an eyelid when he was replaced today.

Of course even the very best have off days, but Brogan has been a level (or two in some cases) below his best for the past two seasons now. Even before his Indian summer in 2010, he wasn't the most consistent sort, although capable of the sublime on his day. Maybe I'm being awkward, but if Brogan was to retire tomorrow, I just don't see him threatening the aforementioned legends of the game on the all-time lists.

Don't know how I feel about getting Kildare in round 3 and then facing Meath if we were to win. I think it's probably the hardest third round draw possible and only Cork would be a worse round 4 opponent. Cavan got a bum draw getting the mandatory all Ulster tie against Derry.

Predictions in bold.

Round 3
Galway v Armagh
Wexford v Laois
Kildare v Tyrone
Derry v Cavan

(First team drawn has home advantage)
Round 4
Galway/Armagh v Cork
Wexford/Laois v Losers of Donegal/Monaghan
Kildare/Tyrone v Meath
Derry/Cavan v Losers of Mayo/London

(All Round 4 ties to be played at neutral venues)

If that's correct then I see the 1/4's being from;
Kerry
Dublin
Mayo
Donegal

Cork
Monaghan
Tyrone
Derry

Hard to look past the four provincial winners for the semis.

Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship Quarter-Finals

Sunday, July 28

Cork v Kilkenny, Semple Stadium, 2pm
Galway v Clare, Semple Stadium, 4pm

Now where else would a lad rather be that day!

What's the story with the hurling semi-finals then? Seeing conflicting reports.

It all depends on the results of the quarter finals and from what I can gather below are the possible semi-final pairings...

If Galway and Kilkenny win, it'll be Kilkenny v Dublin and Galway v Limerick,

If Clare and Kilkenny win, it'll be be Clare v Dublin and Kilkenny v Limerick,

If Cork and Galway win, it'll be be Cork v Dublin and Galway v Limerick,

If Cork and Clare win, it'll be be Cork v Dublin and Clare v Limerick.

I understand why the pairings are decided where either Cork or Galway win, but why is scenario#2 not an open draw?

Aye. If Laois had gotten Wexford at home, I'd be very confident of a win but away, with the brittle heads on our boys.......

If we do get over Wexford, I can see us accounting for Monaghan. Apart from that, the matches pick themselves. Kildare away could be a cnut and Meath showed well against Dublin but no-one would want to get Tyrone - esp Kerry - and they could be the odd one out to come through. It could be all four provincial winners again this year though.

Big Papi accidentally forgot ;):p:wenger::nono: , that Donegal have to play Monaghan in the Ulster final on Sunday..... I have the "shoes polished", ham in the fridge for the sambos & a few mushrooms (fao; IwtK), so I'm all set for the road to Clones Sun. morn.

I can tell ye this.... we're(Monaghan) going up there, to win our 15th Ulster Snr. title (1st in 25yrs) & also our first minor since 1942 circa. This is the 1st time our Snrs. & minors play Ulster finals on the same day! ;)

Have a great day out man. Honestly I'd love to see you win and turn over Donegal. Any idea who's reffing the game yet?

You're obsessed with referees, Irwin!

Only when Ulster teams are playing man. Look at how Duffy handled the Cavan game at the weekend compared to how the Wexford game was handled with pretty much the exact same mallee. The refs from the South are incapable of reffing an Ulster game well and I think it's largely due to an anti-Ulster bias and also due to an irrational fear of losing control of the game to they are stricter and flash the cards more. More an more games in my eyes are being decided by the refs favouring one team or the other on the day and it's spoilt the championship a little.

Or maybe I'm just bitter.

Oh Ole. Why did you have to do it?

Good luck to ye, I'd love to see you do it, but I don't see it happening at all.

Some great matches coming up now. Kildare vs Tyrone should be a good one.

Littering the thread with your gaelic football shite when it's potentially one of the greatest ever hurling championships, for shame.

Bollocks to that, Feeks. The standard of hurling this year has been very poor. Practically every game has been littered with mistakes. In saying that, there has been some very exciting games and it has been the most open Championship for nearly twenty years.

I said earlier in the thread (about a month ago) that I'd love for the hurling championship to return to the halcyon days of the mid 1990s. Little did I know it would come at Tipperary's expense. So now it is like 1994 all over!

The hurling championship is the one where everyone likes to sound educated and top GAA head by talking about when in reality the football is the only one that really matters.

Big Ball > Small Ball

What in the name of jaysus would a Tyrone man living below in Sligo know about the small ball in fairness?!

I'm looking forward to the Tyrone - Kildare match in a while. I have a fancy for Tyrone as I believe they possess the more potent forwards as I think Kildare's forwards are more physical specimens than natural points-scorers. It all remains to be seen, though. I hope it's a cracker either way.

Kildare were shite in that first half. They seemed so clueless.

Doing well so far this half though.

Laois, Tyrone, Galway! and Cavan all through to meet the provincial runners-up. Meath v Tyrone all set, as is Galway v Cork. Laois will probably face Monaghan, but tranger things have happened. Cavan will almost certainly meet London, though I expect the Connacht final to be within 6 pts.

Happy enough just to get through these games. We should have enough for meath but I can't see us progressing past the quarters. Same with Cavan and London. Monaghan should beat laois too. The only one I don't know about is cork Galway. Galway have come a long way from the hiding mayo dished out to them before.

I'm enjoying this game tbh. Only 8-3 after 50 minutes, but its not a terrible game imo. Hope Monaghan win.

Much improved in the second half here. Monaghan have been magnificent but you couldn't rule out Donegal just yet.

I think it's an absorbing game of football now.

Quite a lot of mistakes but Monaghan played a powerful game and out-Donegalled Donegal....shows what I know! I don't hold out too much hope for us next round, but sure we can pray for a result.

London were not bad, until they got inside the 21 and crisper passes could have opened Mayo 3/4 times for goal chances.

All six provincial finals completed this summer have been won on the winners' home grounds....if you allow Croker as Dublin's.

I wonder if that has happened before?
