IF the holdup is the money owed why do you think Barca aren’t paying it? Or does he really not want to go?
I don't think he wants to go but I do think he will if Barca pays him the money. Even if he is well liked in Barcelona it will be tough to stay since he will be aware of that he is blocking the way for a financially easier rebuild of the team. My best guess is that Barca aren't paying it because they need every penny and I think they are hoping that United is desperate for some kind of talisman signing and that United will pay the whole or a part of the money they owe. However I do think it is very very likely De Jong leaves and if United doesn't act in time it could be to another club.
The reason for why I don't think Frenkie wants to leave is that Barca will have a great starting eleven this year and Barcas only problem is lack of depth in midfield and somewhat in the defense line. The attacking line is off the charts with Lewandowski, Dembélé, Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres, Raphinha, Aubameyang and Depay. It is crazy having Aubemeyang and Depay risking being the sixth and seventh alternative for a starting place but that is how good the offense looks like. De Jong knows he could play a vital role in a team that can compete for every title and it is clear that it will be a blow for Barca if he leaves, but we are in a position were we have to gamble with the squad depth. Since I'm a huge Bielsa/Guardiola-fan I'm sure Tenhag is going to do wonders with United this year but the squad isn't good enough (yet) and De Jong surely sees that United can't compete for the title this year and playing in Europa League is not a plus either I suppose
