Barca clearly have no idea what they are doing though. We knew we were going for a player that was desperate to stay there and still spent most of the transfer window chasing him, and will likely spend the remainder of it trying to get him.
Well, he clearly doesn’t want to leave Barca and that has been the message all along. I don’t think it’s nearly as much about the €17m owed as they could sort that out after he left anyway, it’s not like they could force him into writing off that debt.
The scenario seems to be that Barca are saying if you accept the transfer away you must accept a lower immediate payment. He's quite obviously refusing that.
They're basically trying to push him out the door + steal from him at the same time.
It looks like there is only one way this transfer will happen: they either pay him the deferred wages, or he stays put (his stance, I don't want to leave, is mainly for legal reasons, I assume that Barca need to pay if they "terminate" the contract, but not if Frankie does so by expressing his wish to leave). Hence FdJ remains silent (which I find weak but understandable) and Laporta says we don't need to sell.
In the end, it will boil down to Barca's financial situation, whether these levers will be enough to register all these players (so far, it looks like it). So they hope that FdJ pushes for a move, while he needs Barca to push him out. Could be a long saga without a happy end for United

I don't think so, as there were many credible repots that he's open to move. However, if he wants to get his 17m, he needs to be the one who was pushed out it appears, hence his reluctance to say I want to leave. It's now a legal battle it seems

It depends imo. Either they are forced to pay him as they need him off the books, or they can let him sit on the bench, treat him like crap (like they already do) until FdJ gives up and forfeits at least a part of these wages

Exactly. Both of them are Dutch. Both of them know each other very well. All it takes is just a phone call that even an agent would know nothing about at first. We are playing our game and are in line with FdJ's interests.
It occurs to me that Barca is playing the same game they played with Messi when he believed he had opted out to join Pep. They basically dared Messi to take them to court believing that he would back down for his love of the club.. Barca’s actions suggest the same plan here, “would you dare take us, your dream club, to a Catalan court?” Doubt de Jong could keep his beach house there if he did.

People don’t seem to realise the finances and the wage issues Barca have are 2 separate things.
With selling off huge chunks of themselves they get the finance to buy players, but La Liga has a salary cap and without sales Barca will be breaching it.
