I’d imagine it’s his agents dealing with Barca rather than Frenkie himself. Once a deal is struck he can easily jump on a plane to the uk. The club would probably charter a private one to pick him up.

I admire the optimism, just hope it doesn’t happen after we have dropped crucial league points waiting for him

Have they agreed a fee though?

In this case Barcelona have agreed to a deal and will no longer have to negotiate for more money.

It seems in their best interest to keep him injury free and protect his value

In most cases a fee isn’t agreed fully yet and taking the player on your can force the buying club to raise their offer. Leaving them at home would affect their value
I believe they have agreed a fee yes.

Fabian Ruiz, if this does not work out.
Complete unknown quantity, will need a true dm to work alongside him. Completely unproven in a tougher league, and we will have to deal with Napoli which is notoriously difficult

Pogba played what, 20 games? And got 4 of his 9 assists in the first game. Scored one goal - not a huge loss in my opinion.
Who's the other? Pereira?
VDB has come back in, with a familiar manager and he's obviously not a bad player, could be like a new signing!
Eriksen can play in midfield, as can Martinez. Iqbal and Garner could make a few appearances.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's still extremely light and our weakest area but if we play better as a team, overall this team is capable of doing well without anyone else. I think the right coaching can take us up as much of a level as a new signing. I would love FDJ or a similar player to come in though.

Matic

I suppose that’s a possibility that the words of encouragement Frenkie is whispering to United are totally insincere? A closet scouser maybe?
 No. I believe that FDJ respects ETH as the coach who ‘made him’ and who always believed in him. Even if he eventually doesn’t come, he’s going to be respectful to his former coach

Why on earth when we agreed an overall deal initial fee plus add ons would we then go and up the guaranteed initial fee then. Its very clear to me to force Barca to address the wage issue to force the deal through. Multiple sources have advised Barca have put a proposal to FDJ to leave, and his response hasn't changed - he is staying.

Utd are looking like mugs here. Dont know what his agent is playing at, but the player seemingly has no desire to join us.
As far as I know, Barca have not said they’ll pay the deferred wages. The improved (or restructured) offer might have something to do with it or it might be because they want some liquidity to complete signings they are making. Nothing is clear in this.

I agree we will look like mugs if this deal doesn’t happen. We generally come off as losers in transfers anyway.

Yes, FDJ really would have loved to stay at Barca but I can’t see him feeling that way since they’ve been crapping on him. He wants to get paid the wages he thinks he is “owed”. Sounds like he’s signed a contract that loaded his wages into the latter years. He has been playing for a reduced wage on the understanding of it balancing out over the next few years. If he leaves, he can’t collect that “extra” money (which is really deferred wages by another name, the difference being Barca don’t actually owe him the money at this point). If the money gets sorted he will leave and “multiple sources” have repeatedly said he wants to come.

We should stop getting fecked by Laporta and FDJ.

Laporta agreed a fee with us but keep fecking around with deferred wages. As for FDJ, he never once say he wants to join Man Utd. Until now his priority is still staying in Barca.

The club is refusing to pay him his deferred wages and trying to force him out but FDJ still going for preseason tour.

People that are adamant the deal is off because of him going on tour but they are taking both Memphis and Pjanic. Two players that are also not wanted.

He hasn’t started, it can’t be bad!
that’s the point though, he’s missed 2 games where savage and iqbal have now potentially over taken him. It probably should have been him playing instead of savage etc.

Anyway i’m sure he will get a chance at some point, but the pressure is on now.

This explains the whole situation far better then I can possibly do

Having said that, I think its time for us to call it a day. This mess is between De Jong and Barcelona. We shouldn't be involved into it and quite frankly there's every chance that this problem will go unresolved past the transfer window. We need to strengthen our midfield

I think he is wrong about this going to court.
If there are no additional clauses in his contract, of which the public is unaware of, about handling the deferred payments in the case of FdJ will leave Barcelona before the contract ends, FdJ had no legal case in court.

Let's assume it's only the deferred wages that hold up this transfer. Why did FdJ multiple times state publicly that he wants and intents to stay at Barcelona calling them his boyhood dream club.
Instead he should just give no comment at all and refer to the ongoing legal dispute about his deferred wages. Only when this issue will be resolved he will be able to speak about his future. This way he won't alternate Barcelona or Man United fans.

I think it’s because we already have a fee agreed with Barca for Frenkie but no club has entered into any discussions for the other two. It’s understandable why people would think a deal could be off, especially when the player isn’t particularly interested or raring to get this sorted in order to come here

Pjanic is apparently staying

Can I ask how you know this to be true?

De Jong’s legal counsel would have seen the benefit of drafting an extended contract to reflect the €17m as earned but deferred compensation vs a new higher wage obligation (especially since that’s what the fact pattern supports). Unless some one has reported (credibly) the actual structure of Frenkie’s contract, I would argue that it should be assumed that it is actually structured as a deferral and not simply being described that way as a convenient “shorthand” of the press to explain a contractual term.

The structure of the contract was reported at some point. Now lets say that we are talking about deferred compensations, then we are talking about earned wages that have not been paid yet, it's a fairly easy situation for De Jong and wouldn't require much negotiations in fact the quickest way to get that money or to be able to go to court would be by accepting to leave the club, as long as Barcelona are solvent which they currently are. To me everything points to unearned wages.

Because he knows it doesn’t matter. If he signs for us tomorrow and start putting up good performance, nobody will remember this saga.

Its in his benefit to keep reiterating that he wants to stay. This is Barcelona we are talking about. They use media to hound players out and if FDJ even hints he is open to move publicly then he will be branded traitor and public opinion will be turned against him. Multiple articles are already there questioning his role at Barcelona.

If Barcelona wants him out then they have to pay him. Unless that is resolved, you will keep seeing him saying he wants to stay no matter what. People should really stop paying attention to what press is writing at the moment. Especially what Spanish press is reporting

Neves is a marked improvement on what we currently have. He isn't FDJ granted, but he'll improve us.

He won't cost more than FDJ, he's 2 years left on his deal. He'd be €60m / £50M max.
Based on what, they don’t have to sell him, they aren’t cash poor, they want to keep him. No reason they would expect to get less than 60-65m, we know we have been quoted way more, even if it was just bluff. Whilst Neves may be an upgrade on mctominay you can not play him with our current midfield. So we would need a hard working box to box player with him. So add on a minimum 25-35m for someone average like tielemans

I think it is more like FDJ was probably being diplomatic in this whole situation while hoping that he didn't have to leave even though Barca wanted him to leave. I think Barca playing 'dirty' in this whole thing probably gives FDJ a way out of this transfer.

I think its off not cause he's on tour but because they're receiving 320m this week and stated that all new signings will be registered.

The tour thing doesn't matter at all really.

FDJ coming in late (if at all) is less of an issue in my view as he already knows how EtH plays and will likely to be able to slot in without too many teething problems.

I am getting sick of hearing about the back and forth between Barca though, how is it they have been signing players but won’t pay him what he’s owed? Insufferable bunch running that place.

At the end of the day, it does not matter how they run their own club. Our club getting involved in that is a bit unfortunate though. We should sign another CM/DM regardless of this situation with FDJ.

We are playing the long game. I am surprised we are not even looking at alternatives.

They'll likely ask for something in the ball park of 80m for him, but that would be lowered with negotiations. If you're selling anything always start with a price a fair bit over its actually valuation to ensure room for negotiations and to still make a reasonable profit.

Barca were asking for €100m for FDJ, we've managed to get the club to agree to at least 20m less for a superior player.

I think a midfield of Fred, Neves and Eriksen could work very well most games personally. It's not idea sure, but again.. if this deal does fall through I think we still need to find another player.

If we fail to get FDJ our options are: McFred, Eriksen, Bruno, Donny, Garner, Iqbal and Savage.

It makes for grim reading. Even with an improved coached and being slightly better drilled (it'll take time) that midfield is lacking in depth in terms of quality and quantity.

Yet we know they want to sell him as they have literally accepted an offer
We certainly know they WANT to sell him. It seems very much like he's told them he's not budging though. Looks like a stalemate for now hence Xavi deciding to take him on tour when other players they want out are excluded. If Xavi thinks he's too good to isolate the player from training/games then there doesnt appear to be a great deal of leverage for the club there, especially considering how much money he's due to be paid just by staying.

They can’t register them like that. La
Liga rules are different. Only a part of the revenue can go to salary or something like that. They haven’t had a significant sale this summer. They have already signed 4 and want 2 more. In total that’s going to be around €250m in transfer fees and wages if not more. They have unpaid wages to so many players on the books.

That has never been their main motivation to sell him though from what I understand.

Frenkie is just simply earning too much for his current status in the squad and he also happens to be one of their most saleable assets in terms of an up front fee. Minus players like Pedri, Fati etc whothey presumably would never sell.

He plays in a position where they are stacked and also where 2/3 of the starting spots are pretty much filled. He is essentially competing with Kessie, Gavi, Nico and even Pjanic now if they plan on keeping him. He’s obviously on far too much money to be a rotation player hence the desire to get rid of him while his stock is still high and use the money to help rebuild areas more needed.

British media banging the same drum

I just dont think thats true. With the levers, that gives them enough room and Xavi counts on FdJ. On top, FdJ appears to not want to move unless he has to and Barca either dont want to pay him or dont push him out either. This one seems dead

It's going to be a tight squeeze but it seems like they will get across the line perhaps.

Does that package mean they can sign and register players? Yes, but not on its own. A few weeks ago, Barcelona suggested that even if they made €600m from the palancas, it might not be enough. Not long after, though, LaLiga president Javier Tebas said that €500m should allow them to sign.

I agree this is what it sounds like.

To me this is a bit like when we wanted rid of Sanchez on his huge wages (difference being that he actually wanted to leave). We had to stomach paying half of his wages while on loan to make the deal happen and probably another payoff when he did leave permanently. Barcelona don't want to do the same. So we're waiting for a compromise.

Can you explain the levers? I've seen it a few times now but not what it is

It's more like Sanchez agreed to lower his wages to 100k a week for 2 seasons only to receive 700k a week in his last 2 seasons, then we try and get rid of him after the 2 seasons of him being on 100k and before his wages go up to 700k a week.

Totally different situation.

No matter how classy a player is, if they don't want to come why the feck are we bothering. Half of our issue is having players with poor attitudes. Not saying De Jong has one now, but surely he won't be giving 100% for a club he doesn't want to be at?

We should be targeting players in the Malacia mould. Young, hungry, determined to succeed. It will help Erik fix the dressing room culture.
