He isn't going to get that kind of money here either. 28 million a season is madness.

Its not madness -- it's the built-in deferral salary from the previous seasons. That's the reason why it's so Messieques a salary.
That's why Laporte's logic is if you are sold off before next year, then you aren't entitled to that Year 4 salary -- even though it was an agreed re-jig of his salary schedule done by the previous regime.

This is why it is difficult. Barca owes a lot of money to not just players, but for all their long installment buys.

How can they buy players then?
Is the Liverpool money paid over a long period of time?
Makes no sense!

Back to square one. I hope de Jong has excellent lawyers to get the wage issue resolved. The Liverpool match would be my target date.

Then Barca have to pay it! We're not going to pay him this amount of money on top of whatever amount they are demanding for him.

- United are close to signing de Jong
- The deal is off
- United are pushing to finalise the deal
- laporta: de jong is not for sale but we need money
- 65m agree, 20m of add ons under discussion
- de jong does not want to join the premier league club
- this is how united will line up with de jong
- united will agree personal terms with de jong after finalising the deal with barca
- de jong deal collapse
- ……

So
- His deferred contract says he receives peanuts (relatively speaking) in first 2 years and huge amounts in next 3 seasons
- He can get this amount only if he stays the next year
- If he doesn't stay (sold to us), he doesn't get the huge amounts promised
- So he is asking Barca to give his 2 year non-deferred salary or else he threatens to stay.

I am still not so sure how this is looking good for us. Seems like too big a mess to sort itself out, unless we decide to compensate the player somehow.

Luckhurst saying we have a €55m deal agreed with Barcelona for de Jong with the ball now in Barca's court to resolve the deferred wages issue which is stopping the deal from advancing.

It’s not 28m a season — it’s 28m for that season because he specifically deferred payment for his first two years. He was earning something like 50k a week first season, 100 and something second season, and now he’s owed the big boy stuff.

He wasnt open to leaving Juve at all. Juve tried to force him out of the club and he refused. Which is why we could not agree personal terms

Which isn't entirely true, it was reported that he was open to a move to the PL. He also had complex image rights issues that neither we nor Spurs could sort out.

Its a mess but not because of our creation.

I am guessing that Barca is disputing the term between deferred salary and a backloaded contract (that ensures performance and loyalty)? So if he isn't around for the 4th year onwards of his contract he wont be entitled to that backloaded salary or from Frenkie's perspective deferred salary owed. Thats their legalistic grounds?

Tbf to Laporte this concept wasn't his baby, so politically he has to do something and not just cave in.

I always found it surprising and rather annoying that people would continue to post the "he doesn't want to join us" bollocks over and over. As if everyone at United are so stupid they'd advance any transfer without first getting assurances from the player and agent. Hopefully the latest news puts that to bed once and for all.

You mean the Liverpool league game?
Yes, not the Bangkok tour match. When and if this does go through, don't think it will stretch out until the last day of the window. The board will probably pull the plug. So, I am hoping and expecting the Liverpool league match on 8/22 to be Frenkie's introduction.

It was a smart or lucky move -- at least they aren't dragged into this mess. There is a baseline now. So maybe they knew it was a complicated 3-way even from the start?

I still think we can make a deal -- when they hit a dead-end situation, United can swoop in and offer to pay that £17M but for one of their strikers or RB. Then everyone wins.

If we sign him and he's a huge success no one will care what we paid. It's only when players turn out to be outright shit or underwhelming that we then question the fee paid.

I can only imagine what the reaction would've been if social media was around back when we bought some of our greatest ever players from Nottingham Forest and Leeds for high fees
well, there may not have been social media but I remember running round like a lunatic, shouting things like: "yes, brilliant, yes, yes yes" when we signed Keane. Loud enough for anyone on my FB now to have heard! Only twice louder: winning our first PL when everyone south of Watford would have heard and when Ole got that goal at the Nou camp...

as you say, I don't give a fig what we pay (it's not my money, well some of it is in a very indirect way). I just want us to get the in the players the manager wants... preferably before the end of the season!

Quite a few of the posters are pure lazy. They just read the latest page and post their 'opinions' or whinge there and then -- without actually investing in the time to actually find out or figure out what's going on.

The only reason I believe this will happen is because of Lewandowski and Raphinha.

They are clearly trying to squeeze out as much from United to fund those two moves. Then Laporte can claim that the sale of Frenkie paid for both Lewandowski and Raphinha!!!
Its all political since they have an AGM coming up and eventually an election a few years down the road.

Laporte the Barca Saviour.

If this rolls on into late August, I am sure we would have lost a few posters. Their heads would have exploded by then.

Really strange how Barca gave played this.
Now please stop these "He doesn't even want to come" nonsense posts.

We would have given up way earlier if there was no indication he was open to the idea.

Anyone who thinks we've not sounded the player out is smoking something strong

If he was so unhappy at the way Barca have conducted themselves then if I were him I'd do a big FU and just stay.

They're contractually obligated to pay me crazy money the next few seasons.

Might as well bring down their club :wenger::devil:

Do you think that the player would like to work at a place where he can feel happy and wanted? A place he can better himself as a footballer and hopefully win some honours?

The football career is rather short to just mess it up.

Can't believe anyone would fall for the idea he doesn't want this move here, Yes we aren't were we use to be as a club on the pitch but off it we are very attractive thanks to our world wide fan base, not to mention we are probably the only ones that can match his present contract comfortably.

We've got a Manager in Ten Hag that knows the player very well, if we are to believe news sources - they've had a conversation on the phone, I believe with their past relationship the player would be honest to his old boss some how and if not so ETH won't be encouraged to ask the club to pursue De Jong at all.

I'm amazed players are still trying to join Barcelona so desperately. They've got no money, they aren't paying their players at all and how brain dead and idiotic De Jong and De Jong's agent have to be to agree to this nonsense contract(De Jong for still employing the agent).

From what I see De Jong's got no case with Barcelona, he has no right to that money and have to suck it up and leave Barcelona as quickly as possible.

Yes you are right if de jong was requesting to leave he would have no claim on the money. But if he is happy to stay on his existing contract there is nothing Barca can do other than pay his very high salary.
The compromise would be that Barca pay the money that they agreed to postpone to the end of the contract and then sell him.
De Jong can wait. He has a contract to fall back on.

De Jong's If-Else logic is simple. If Barca pays me x amount (it may not even be what was promised), I'd prefer to stay. Else, I leave for United.

The all-win solution is clear to see, but just like in Game Theory, don't be surprised if Barca decides on the all-lose one.

There's no doubt we are being used, but why not since there's a chance to sign a player we need. Just that we cannot allow this to drag on much longer.

The worry is that we can't put it past Laporta to suddenly pull another economic lever to allow Barca to keep FDJ while also able to sign Lewandonski and Raphinha. Laporta has no qualms about selling more of Barca future. Barca supporters have no problem either because Laporta has the support of the majority.

This deal looks like it could be potentially drag on entire window and we could end up with nothing. We really need to give both FDJ and Barca a deadline. After that we have to move on. We really need to strengthen our midfield and don't want to be left to panic buy at the end of the window.
