You think Rice would improve City and Liverpool? I'd see him sat on the bench, maybe knocking Henderson off the pine at Liverpool, can't even see him making the bench at City.
Sure he could still make a bench at City, as replacement for Fernandinho, and backup for Rodri.

But I don't see City spending 150m on a backup, even though they did signed Grealish for 100m as squad rotation for Foden/Sterling.

Rodri is basically the next Busquets. (without the international titles :) )

I can respect someone rating Rice, but because of his passing !? He's far more of a workhorse than a conductor like Rodri.

I don't think he is that good. Odegard has a similar style to him and cost £30m .. admittedly he plays slightly further up the pitch but I think they are similar talent wise.

Odegaard is way way overrated. Even at his worst, FdJ is not losing any ground to the best version up to date of Odegaard.

The potential of FjD is a Roll Royce of a deep play maker, that people seem to forget. He's press resistant to the extend that you feel like he's the Messi of this part of the pitch. Throwing a few players to press him even if he's facing his own goal is no use.

The issue at Barcelona is not he's struggling with the level, but the style. Barcelona system want to play more short passes, and other players in the build want more touch on the ball, where as FdJ is touch greedy. This is worse when Messi was still around, as Messi wants to get involved and having many touches in possession too.

At Ajax, FjD pretty much ran the show when they build up from deep. They kinda take the make the pitch large principle to the extreme with him; where his teammates kinda stay away from him. This allowed them to overload in other parts of the pitch having opposition hand full. FdJ alone often broke through the first press, without involving his own teammates in complicated triangle, tiki taka. FdJ is also athletic and capable defensively.

I never this level of potential in Odegaard (Require plenty more water carrier, and way less outstanding in individual brilliance). Well worth to doubling the fee if FdJ is attainable.

Xavi endorses the sale of De Jong from Barcelona to Manchester United

The Barça coach wants to renew the midfield with players like Pedri

I doubt they ”want” to sell him, but needs must.

As good as he is, I don’t think losing him would make a great deal of difference to their team considering the young talent they have in midfield.

So 60-70m + big wages off the books surely has to be a consideration for them.
But its really hard to keep everyone happy over next few years

Apparently Busquets would be their first choice, and rightly so. He is their most proven and most experience players.

Pedri is the new golden boy of Spain, the most impressive midfielder in Euro last summer.

Gavi would be their future CM. 17 year old and Spain international, 43 appearances for Barca this season. Huge talent.

And Nico too, another young CM who is equally as good in passing and dribbling.

Then they have De Jong situation, who is currently a better player perhaps, but actually looks similar to their other talented youngsters - their dribbling, passing, tackling stats are mostly identical/comparable.

If I am Xavi, I would absolutely wants to build my future team with Pedro, Gavi, Nico, maybe at most get another strong DM to replace Busquets in future. De Jong would be their good stop gap option for 2-3 years or so, but its not a must. If those youngsters are ready to play for Spain national team, I see no reason why they couldn't start more games for Barca (as they already did this season). Its like, selling the likes of Kanchelski, Ince, Hughes to promote the likes of Beckham, Scholes, Butt to their first team.

Pretty to clear to me that Barca want this to happen, they want the money, and they believe their other (young) midfielders can replace him.

Yeah the fact that the story is coming from their side (player leaving) speaks volumes.

The only thing that could stop this from happening is if another team that can afford him is in for him.

Don't forget about Kessié coming in. He's probably going to be their experienced B2B midfielder in that 3 to complement the younger Spanish midfielders. They can also try to mould him into a midfield destroyer to replace Busquets if needed.

It does actually. They are in a lot of trouble financially and have some excellent midfield prospects coming through so it’s one of the areas they can most afford to sell off a player for big money.
It makes most sense for Barca. He seems to be behind Busquets, Gavi and Pedri in the pecking order, with Kessie coming in next month.

I liken it to when Barca had Cesc Fabregas and I think they'd be laughing if they recouped most of the £80m ish they spent on him
Money problems and he is their most sellable asset that can generate a huge sum. The likes of Memphis they would have to sell cheap to get them off the wages like we would if we sold someone like Martial.

I stand corrected then. I still don't think it'll happen but the deal clearly could make sense for Barca.

I mean, he could tell them feck off too, but that rarely happens. If they really want him to leave, it’ll be a case of him taking the best option available.
And sometimes, like with Fabinho (or to an extent Kante), a club just gets a free run at a player, or manager (Klopp) which seems bizarre as they are a no-brainer.
It’s all about timing.

Well the journalist reporting this specifically says that Barca want this sorted before June 30th. Also it was mentioned in the Coutinho to Villa deal that they want that sale registered in June, so clearly Barca don't want this to drag on if he is on the market.
We’ll if they can’t shift the players they want to shift by then we could get lucky

Yeah, hopefully you're right - although with the top 5 potentially getting CL football in the next couple of seasons, it could be a bit easier for Newcastle to challenge sooner. They're probably going to end up on a similar number of points this season to City in their first under their current owners (City 50, Newcastle currently 43), and that's with Newcastle only having one window of activity. I think Newcastle will be serious contenders for the top 5 in the next 2 season, and although we're coming at it from different ends of the table, we're going to start dealing with them as competition on and off the pitch sooner rather than later.

But this is getting away from the main topic here, and I really hope we're in for FDJ/get it over the line.

Oh so much de-railment. Yeah It'll be interesting to see how they go but obviously hoping they crash and burn as unrealistic as it is.

I'd be delighted if we can get FDJ in too.

What do you mean? Like we would get some discount?

I don't think so. I believe they want to these sale done early, so they can wrap up their purchase lest other clubs get in the way aka PSG-Wjinaldum last summer. Also to not complicate loan to permanent deal like Adama Traore. Or even reattach O.Dembele

I feel like if these kind of deal doesn't materialize by then, it would be off completely after Barcelona would miss their transfer target

Major red flag for me that he doesn’t want to leave and has no affinity with United. I think he’ll be pushed out but end up somewhere like Bayern.

Odegaard is barely even rated.. comparing De Jong to him is pretty silly in my opinion.

Aye in all honesty I kind of agree. Unless our bald overlord is very convincing, I do think he'll have numerous offers from clubs in better positions currently.

Still done dealio and can't wait for the announcement.

The major red flag for me is that they're happy for him to leave. This is a guy who was touted to be become a world class player and Barca did everything it took to buy him, now they're discarding him so easily.

Pretty simple really. They’re effed for money and happen to have other very good players that can play his position so to balance the books it makes sense to sell him and hope Gavi and Pedri make his loss seem minimal.

He is good but the kids around him are better, simple as that. Also if it was any other coach I'd be wary but the one guy who can get the best out of him is coming here.

Yea they let go of Messi just last year because of his wages, its a similar scenario here.

Thanks. I hope we sign him, we desperately need quality midfielders.
