Missing out just a year of CL isn’t that much of a big deal to be honest. As long as you pay good wages and players buy into your project and a manager they believe in, they’ll come

This is the most important part. To offer an ambitous project, then it's all about executing as promised and offering an enjoyable environment.

We've finished outside of the top 4 more than often than we've finished in it since Ferguson left, it's completely reasonable for a player to worry that this isn't an aberration although you're right that there's a chance if he can be convinced that this time it might be better and the money offered is substantial enough.

I don't think he is that good. Odegard has a similar style to him and cost £30m .. admittedly he plays slightly further up the pitch but I think they are similar talent wise.

Odegaard wasn't playing and wasn't going to play for Real Madrid which is why he went for that price. And one player is an attacking midfielder while the other is a deep lying playmaker that also played as a CB for Ajax and Barcelona.

De jong isn’t a number 6 though is he? Isn’t he more box to box… be a lot of money to spend on the wrong type of midfielder, can he control games? It would be decent if we signed him but then got Kamara on a free.
He is no 6. He's closer to Pirlo type of deep play maker than Kroos, Xabi Alonso, Carrick... where he sees a lot of possession to orchestra of the play, and enjoys freedom to carry the ball and advent up the pitch. These player prefers occupying the position in front and between the CBs.

Prime Bastian Schweinsteiger is better example for the role of box to box. He can play make deep, but he prefers playing more direct, and also the freedom to float in advanced position when the team pin back opposition. Bastian Schweinsteiger works better in double pivot with a partner that is more defensive minded.

A few poster here seems to mistook what EtH said about FdJ with description of a box to box midfielder which I disagree here.

honestly i just want us to move early for decent damn players and begin the rebuild. Get some damn business done.

It seems that if Barca can't pay a certain amount of money by June, they may have to sell him. I'd love him here, and he would cost 70/80 million euro. Obviously, frenkie would rather stay at Barca, as he has said many times. We will see..would be great to have him.

Either this tier 1 Barcelona is a step ahead of everyone else on this deal or he's helping Barca build some narrative. Odd for a reputed journalist to put his neck on the line followed by caution from everyone else.

He plays box to box at Barcelona, which is why he was underperforming since it’s different role to how he plays at Ajax. At Ajax, he plays more as no 6 in double pivot but given more freedom to roam forward. The video below called it as libero role.

this Romero guy i apparently pretty reliable, go check their forums .

He also broke the kessie and Christiansen transfers before everyone else.

I'm just surprised every other has cautioned and said it's not done / long way / uphill battle.

The rest most likely have different sources or don't have any sources and are just giving their opinions.

Maybe helping them to start a bidding war. The only reason FDJ would join UTD is ETH so there is a slim possibility though.

As you said, I don't think this guy would just spew off nonsense and ruin his credibility.
Even if someone from inside the club asked him to start the rumor it will bode well for us as it shows that he's gettable.

To be fair, he won’t be going anywhere that doesn’t match his Barca deal, so whoever takes him if he’s truly available will be paying him a lot. The kind of money 99% of clubs, Liverpool included, cannot afford.
Which makes me wonder who are the other clubs that may be interested in signing him with that kind of wage...(he is currently earning £260k a week, right?)

Real Madrid - Impossible. I doubt Barca would sell him to their biggest rivals

PSG - possibly. But they already have Verratti, who seems to be similar type of player? But wouldn't count them out, there are still some room of improvement from their midfield, competing with the likes of Pereira, Herrera, Wijnaldum for the other 2 starting spot.

City - not likely, as City doesn't really need him, as they already have KVB and Silva in CM, and Rodric in DM. Its perfect balance for their football. They will need to find a replacement who is stronger defensively for Fernandinho though, as backup to Rodri. But if they want him, he will join them immediately, I can tell.

Chelsea - not likely. They don't need him now, as they already have Kante and Joginho as DM, and Mount as AM.

Liverpool - not likely. I reckon they might go all in for Tchouameni instead, who suit them more. Plus they already have Fabinho and Thiago.

Juventus - perhaps not, but wouldn't count them out. I mean, do they really need him, when they already have Locatelli, Arthur, who seems to be similar type of player? But they rebuilding their squad too, so anything is possible.

Newcastle - not possible. Even they are fecking rich now, it would take them few more years to build up their squad.

Bayern - Don't think he suit them at all, plus thy already have Kimmich and Goretzka, who are perfect for them

Arsenal - Well, I don't know, sure they could afford him with all the CL income they will get next season? I mean, they are not shy to spend big on Ben White last summer, sure they wouldn't be shy to spend big on De Jong this summer too, if he is available? They have Xhaka and Partey in midfield, but De Jong does seem to be good upgrade to them.

It's being reported as 200k right? That's not too bad in todays market. I don't see Liverpool paying it but there are many other teams who would. We'll see.
200k after tax according to Ducker so would be more like 360k before tax

So De Jong is £65m, but Declan Rice is £150m? I’d take two De Jongs with money to spare in the case.

The delusion levels of West Ham and Rice himself is off the fecking charts.

My 2 cents is that maybe those journos are trying to appease the Barca fans.

It's a very unpopular decision which they hoped to keep under wraps until it was a done dealio. But now, they have to save face.

From a realistic stand point of view it makes too much sense to sell FDJ right now for them. They need the cash, but also it's a good way to further balance the books and get rig of his insane wages while the likes of Gavi and Pedri are ready to make a step up.

im not sure what exactly the cost of rice is, but guarantee would be over 100 million at least. Really hope we stay away from the overpriced english players like Rice and get the value of other targets.

It's not that simple I think, they don't play in the exact same position. Rice will be overpriced but he is quality and has proven physical attributes for league as a dm. It sounds lazy saying he's premier league proven, but his passing ability and dropping in shouldn't be underestimated. He would improve top two never mind us.

Its a "feck off" price tag obviously. West Ham don't think that's a fair price, they just don't want to sell and English clubs basically don't have to sell so can set "feck off" price tags and laugh if somebody actually pays that (like us with Maguire).

Why does that make Rice deluded he hasn’t set that valuation.

You think Rice would improve City and Liverpool? I'd see him sat on the bench, maybe knocking Henderson off the pine at Liverpool, can't even see him making the bench at City.

Perfect replacement for fernandihno, better than Rodri. Henderson has injury problems and needs upgraded, Rice transitions are fast. Passing ability better than all these players. The price is ridiculous for Rice but he's only going to get better.

FDJ is a deep lying playmaker. His whole specialty is controlling games. He's the perfect player for a possession based team. He isn't a proper 6 in the mould of a ball winner though which we need badly. We will very much need FDJ and another defensive midfielder which was always the case anyway. I'd be happy with Kamara for the short term since he's free. Also ok with Philips for the prices being suggested even if he is injury prone. Ideally I think we could do with signing both in addition to FDJ since I wouldn't expected either to have a big salary and we wouldn't have to spend much of the budget to get them in.

Don't suppose Fred could be the part of the double 6...possibly a controversial suggestion :nervous:

Barca need to settle down Gavi and Nico - Pedri already has long term contract and they believe in them more in long haul and Frenkie is the easiest to sell without major loss.
They have so many young talented midfielders in their team, its almost unreal.

Can understand why they want to sell De Jong so soon.

I just don't see it. I've watched him play and I don't think he's anywhere near as good as you're making him out to be. He's a solid player but he doesn't have that extra quality that would mark him as an elite, in my viewings of him. He's a total upgrade on our side, no question, but I don't think he's top tier.

Rice better than Rodri, including in the passing department?

Wasn't Maguire a bidding war between City and us?

No, Leicester just wanted a CB record fee and that was their price for the summer. City were interested but not willing to pay that.

I doubt they ”want” to sell him, but needs must.

As good as he is, I don’t think losing him would make a great deal of difference to their team considering the young talent they have in midfield.

So 60-70m + big wages off the books surely has to be a consideration for them.
