Wish we'd signed him under OGS so that we could've seen the "Frenkie goes to Ole-Wood" headline

De jong isn’t a number 6 though is he? Isn’t he more box to box… be a lot of money to spend on the wrong type of midfielder, can he control games? It would be decent if we signed him but then got Kamara on a free.

he’s not a DM but he operates in the double pivot and he’s a controller type

i think he’s exactly what we need but we need a specialist DM as well, fo sho

Half the Caf didn’t believe Varane would come either but he plays for us now. This in the same sense has too much smoke going on too

i didn’t believe it, didn’t believe Di Maria either

so officially not believing this one, its clearly bollocks

I don't think them not being willing to spend the money on Lingard is indicative of them not being ambitious/willing to push the boat out, more that they're being sensible and realizing his true worth - something we've failed at for the last few seasons.

Obviously there are loads of arguments as to why Utd are more compelling, and I of course think they are too. But if I was a player basing my decision on where I should go, where Newcastle come up trumps - who has more ambitious owners? and who has more money to willingly spend/invest in the project?

ETH is going to need a while to impose his style on the team and should be given time to transition the club, but that does mean top 4 is by no means a certainty next season, and by the time 23/24 comes around who knows where Newcastle will be in regards to their project. As a reference point, City were challenging top 4 in their second season under their current owners, and cracked it in their third.

Some players won't come to United because we're not in the CL next season. It's a lot harder now to break into the top 4 as well. I can't see any player we'd be interested in choosing to go to Newcastle because they might be challenging for top 4 in 3 or 4 years time. As for 23/24 that seems ridiculously ambitious to me.

I thought about this too.
If we do get him we would still need a DM.

And if we didn’t we’d still need a playmaker. We need more than one starting midfielder. De Jong is the best of one of the types we need that we can get. Let’s deal with the DM afterwards.

we always needed two midfielders anyway, no matter who we buy

none of our mids are good enough for Ten Hag, in my opinion

but they could be useful backups

This lack of CL is actually overstated. From next year, EPL will get 5 CL places . With this team, if we can't make it to 5 or if FDJ thinks we can't do it, then he isn't really motivated to do it.

That's what people don't get. This whole sentiment that breaking up play is all we need is wrong. The passing and playmaking ability in our midfield, or entire team, is piss poor.

I agree. Fred and McT may drop down even further with Garner coming back.
One thing for certain. ten Hag wont just settle. he will get the players playing the way he wants or move them on.

Given that Ajax played Burnley pre-season a few years ago, when we play them they could ask “Frenkie…do you remember Mee?”

having read the more recent tweets, its already over isnt it, this muppet train has derailed. oh well, weve had a whole summer of it, in just 24 hours.

Tchouameni was my most wanted but I’d be happy with De Jong + Bissouma/another

All noises that Barca want to sell and they are seemingly inviting United to bid and show them the money. Frenkie would be on the next plane out to Carrington if United make an offer

I don't think we can persuade him to ignore CL clubs and choose us without us handing him a massive deal, I'd hoped we'd moved on from doing that.

I hope the board doesn't waste to much time pursuing him if it's not really viable.

To be fair, he won’t be going anywhere that doesn’t match his Barca deal, so whoever takes him if he’s truly available will be paying him a lot. The kind of money 99% of clubs, Liverpool included, cannot afford.

Like his fellow countryman he’ll wear the number of the PL title he’ll win us

I agree. Only our offer would have to be north of any deal from Liverpool, City ect...

I just can't see the deal happening

I dont care really if the players are moving to us for money or other reasons beside loving to play for UTD. I only need them to be professional and wants to play football as a players.

We see too many are now treating football careers as more of a celebrities/star thing because of the social media power they generate and that more or less makes them less focus on football.

I am cautiously optimist on this deal

A- Its evident that Barcelona wants him out. Even if they backtrack on this, the damage had already been made
B- De Jong hasn't been that great at Barcelona. If he ends up on the bench at another club then his career as a top tier midfielder will be over. United have no CM, they have just signed his mentor at Ajax, he'll be playing with VDB and we will be throwing loads of cash at him in salaries as a sweetener which would make it almost impossible for us to send him on the bench if things go wrong (think of Fridge).

It seems that you implying theres a special bond between ETH and FDJ, do i missed something because i've never heard news regarding their special relationship during and after ajax? And players will have many other things aside of relationship with former manager to consider when choosing their next club: the prestige of the club, the prospects of winning titles, reputation, country or city where the club is located, including inputs from their family. the prospect of re-uniting with former manager isnt going to cut in if the club lack of those, especially when other better organized clubs are knocking on your door.
I didn't say about anything special between ten Hag and De Jong. I merely refute your claim that IF de Jong move to United, it will be hard for him because he does not have someone to rely on. I pointed out that he actually would have, as we have his former manager who he played quite well under. I didn't say that he will move here because of ten Hag. But IF he does move, then there's a good chance that it will work out

People don't seem to grasp that both dm and cm are needs this summer.

Yeah, hopefully you're right - although with the top 5 potentially getting CL football in the next couple of seasons, it could be a bit easier for Newcastle to challenge sooner. They're probably going to end up on a similar number of points this season to City in their first under their current owners (City 50, Newcastle currently 43), and that's with Newcastle only having one window of activity. I think Newcastle will be serious contenders for the top 5 in the next 2 season, and although we're coming at it from different ends of the table, we're going to start dealing with them as competition on and off the pitch sooner rather than later.

But this is getting away from the main topic here, and I really hope we're in for FDJ/get it over the line.

DM is a bigger priority IMO because as the CM we have Fred who is a decent player, while for DM we have nobody. But yeah we need both, just think CM (Fred replacement) is much lower in the pecking order (DM, ST, RB, RW and then CM for me).

Have a feeling he's not itching to move to us. This could turn out bad I fear. The only reason for positivity is that ETH has coached him before and will know what to expect out of him. I know there are loads of people who are convinced ETH will be roaring success but I'm not so sure. So even knowing Ten Hag wants him doesn't quite convince me. We've all been burned far too much for me to be positive over anything.

ESPN are chancers mate

they know less than John Snow
ESPN on their own, yes. Sam Marsden, Moisés Llorens, and Rob Dawson, however, are three of their most reliable journalists for football, especially the first two.

Anyways, James Ducker's report basically makes de Jong seem like a bit of a dream signing given the player's desire for CL football if he were to be forced out.

Missing out just a year of CL isn’t that much of a big deal to be honest. As long as you pay good wages and players buy into your project and a manager they believe in, they’ll come

I don't think he is that good. Odegard has a similar style to him and cost £30m .. admittedly he plays slightly further up the pitch but I think they are similar talent wise.
