The fact he’s willingly speaking with Ten Hag every day is a massive indication he wants the move. If not why entertain it.

Can it be that FdJ is in a lose-lose situation?

Like he got a clause that the deferred wages will only be paid to him, if he still is with Barcelona on due date. It sound far fetched but if his love for the club is really that big, he might have accepted such clause thinking he wouldn't leave anyway.

So if he leaves, he will forfeit the money and if he stays he has to accept a pay cut and loses the money as well.

It’s not the money mate. The player doesn’t really want to leave. That’s been widely reported.

I would rather suffer through McFred for 4 months, get our fecking act together and scout players we need who want to come here, buy them in the January window than overpay for a CM, both transfer fees and wages, who doesn’t really want to play for us. Didn’t we just finally get rid of a underperforming, overpaid CM?

I say feck the Glazers for being absolute gits, devoid of intelligence and leadership. If ETH can only make this work with Frenkie De Jong, with no other options, no plan B, not a single player who can play the role he needs FDJ to play, then we are in a shitload of trouble.

It's amazing how a bog standard "I'm flattered, but happy at the club I am at" when the saga began and sporadic reporting from Spain (same sources that claim Barca doesn't want to sell - despite having already agreed a deal) has become evidence that de Jong doesn't want to come.

To be fair they might just be watching Netflix together and chilling, football might not be on their minds! Ten Hag video calling Frenkie while he's cooking up a fry up. Just good friends.

Just as many reports since saying he’s open to the move and now yesterday he’s been speaking to Ten Hag every day. He’s definitely open to the move.

That has to be illegal.

You think a club should bend over to a players salary demands instead?... Isn't that what got them into the mess they are in now?

A club shouldn’t be so badly run that they face financial ruin if their players don’t take pay cuts. This has nothing to do with bending over for players.

I get it, you want to defend your club, but Barcelona has been run extremely poorly.

Oh right so we have already decided he will be an underperforming overpaid CM?

We are also 100% sure he doesn't want to come to us at all he's just speaking to our manager daily for shits & giggles.

I remember when all those players that didn't even know Manchester City existed as a club came and they were all terrible and we never heard of those noisy neighbours ever again as they were all Di Marias.

We are also in massive trouble because we have agreed a deal with our main target and just waiting for the green light from the selling club.

I will add. I think they continue to be run poorly in my opinion.

I agree with you on a broader level. We should identify the type of player we need, and scout accordingly. Rather than saying we want player A or else nothing.

You would think we have improved on this front after the recent changes in structure. But it looks like we are still completely dependent on the manager to identify our targets. Either our scouting system is non existent or the club hierarchy are completely ignoring their recommendations. Both wouldn't really surprise me.

I get why Ten Hag wants players he has played with before, but this severly limits the target pool of players. And also doesn't help us in negotiations. Of course Ajax won't sell half of their team to us in one season.
Funny. When you look at the way Klopp built Liverpool, he brought in unheralded players for that midfield 3… Henderson was a holdover, Wijnaldum for 23m, Milner on a free, then spent fairly big on Fabinho and Keita a season or two later.

I believe that the United scouting team was in disarray — recent sackings would seem to support this theory — and ETH would, naturally, want to bring in players he’s familiar with.

Did I disagree with that?
I'm simply saying the stance on Dembele renewal is the right one, or do you think they should bend over and start handing out silly contracts again?
Of course they have been poorly run, that's why they are in this mess, so why continue, surely you change tact no?

He is coming. Relax.

They just need to negotiate a final payment on his contract. The broke fecks barca clearly dont want to pay it. Especially not the full whack.

From our end I'm assuming everything is done. Hence the radio silence.

I know there is no smoke without fire but genuine question, how do we know they are talking daily? Seems odd for any transfer historical relationship regardless. I've seen very little that I 100% believe from tweets banging around. I know leaks and deliberate leaks are common I just think there is a lot behind the scenes we don't know on this one.

Yes.

Call me crazy but I believe uncle Gerard.

Mostl likely current state

Why? What would be illegal, if the player agrees to a clause the deferred payments will only be paid if he is still with the club.
It's like an added loyalty bonus.

Of course it's cnutish from Barcelona trying to force him to leave the club now in order to safe the outstanding money.

Guilting a player into resigning on half his wage by making statements to the press like this is classless.

Offer what you can afford and leave it at that. There is no need for this to be played out in public.

I’m not saying FDJ would necessarily underperform for us. I’m saying Pogba was overpaid, underperformed and spent the last 6 years trying to leave United.

If we’ve known for 2 weeks that terms with the selling club and United have been agreed to, why hasn’t the deal happened? Why is he speaking to the manager daily? If he truly wanted to leave Barca, the terms were agreed to, what’s the holdup? His contract? Is that why he’s speaking to ETH daily? This whole thing just smells off.

I honestly hope we get him, but this soap opera doesn’t instill much confidence in the player, Murtagh and to some extent, Ten Hag.

If Barca are really trying to renegotiate all of their players contracts then there needs to be something in it for the players. For instance, Frenkie could agree

If they want to renegotiate players contracts then a player would have every right to demand a much reduced release clause in return - knowing they could leave for £5 or £10m, for example, and negotiate a big wage or signing on fee to cover money owed.

What does that even mean, talking to Ten Hag every day? If true, Ten Hag is either trying to convince him (beg him?) to come to United — which isn’t great, or what are they talking about? Seriously? Great Dutch restaurants in Manchester? Top Gun: Maverick?

How he’s going to be the man.

How he’s going to be the man.
That’s just creepy. “Frenkie, just calling today to repeat, for the 17th time, and for the 17th day in a row, you’re the man! The fact that I have done this every day for over two weeks is a clear signal that you really are the man. Let’s talk for 15 more minutes about how you’re the man.”

Bizarre take.

I am being tongue in cheek you fool

For one of the years in question he agreed to €3M/year. Which is less than €60k/week....

Now that's still a lot of money but it's embarassing to short change a key player that much. Especially when FDJ was gracious enough to agree it to help them out.

It's clear now that FDJ does want to leave but is unwilling to say anything in public that could be construde as disruptive and risk there being an argument over loyalty payments.

I'm hoping that our scouting team gets their shit together by next season. Can't keep depending on the manager for potential signings.

I read that Liverpool have some serious Moneyball kind of scouting set up with advanced data analytics teams and what not. Maybe we should take inspiration from that.

Let's say FDJ somehow ends up staying at Barca at the end, this would put our whole transfer strategy and ETHs 'key piece' redundant. I hope we have other targets in place, but it seems like an all or nothing strategy.

Maybe get your facts straight before the faux outrage.

they've literally just registered Kessie and asked him to defer payments, they've already asked countless players to defer payments and they're trying to weasel out of paying De Jong the money he's already deferred.

maybe get your facts right before being a condescending cnut :)

It’s treating your employees badly not paying them their wages. Surely you get that?
So you are okay with a company fecking their employees for wages? Just because said employee has enough money?

By that logic, most of the companies in developed economies can say the same about their employees. I'm sure someone earning 100K a year will not go broke if he's not paid 30% of his wages. So why not do that?
When has Barcelona done that? They propose to players to defer their wages. Players decide if they agree or not. We are talking about millionaires who are told that instead of getting 10m for 5 years, they'll get 3m this year, 5m next and then 14m for the next 3 years.

When has Frenkie said he is not receiving his wages or feels hard done by Barcelona for the deferred wages?

You either don't get the context at all or are reacting incredibly primitively.

Supposedly the scouting structure was completely revamped 2 years ago with one of the Glazers bragging that they had a feck-ton of players in their database, etc.

But here we are.:(

They're publicly saying they want him to stay whilst simultaneously negotiating his transfer from the club and leaking his contract to show why they want him gone.
Yep, that's called negotiations.
His manager won't play him in his preferred position because he considers himself to have much better players in that position too.
"His preferred position" is not strong enough argument for him to speak against his club not selling him though. It's something he is happy to live with, according to his own words.
So yeah, they're treating him like royalty there, what a club.
What Barca says to the media is not what they say to their star players. None of the team are stupid enough not to speak with their players and their agents, instead to communicate through the media.

Maybe not exactly like that but sure similar situation conceptually. It looks like this is purely between Barca and De Jong. remember they are saying they can’t pin down his agent for talks?
For instance, I would imagine a similar situation that the goodwill contract signed to defer the salary to later years might not cover what to do if the player transfers away. Barca just wants him leave as if the goodwill in the first place is nothing at all. Thus, De Jong has to either forfeit or accept a much reduced amount to complete the transfer. At the same time, Barca wants to sell him. It’s very unfair to the player.
They made so much noise so loud. Barca has no manners and is despicable in this case.

Just my personal opinion is all. I’ve been fortunate to travel the world extensively with work and I do not think Barcelona is all that, I find the people to be arrogant in the same way as Parisians and it’s not a city that gives you a ‘safe’ feeling.

The footballers lifestyle that you mentioned would most likely have them living in Cheshire, which I think is one of the most picturesque areas in Europe. Also the people of the north west are great and welcoming.

Again my opinion from my experiences.
Then again, twenty-somethings prefer the beach...
