Depends how you define DM doesn’t it. Most people think of it as the tackler, defensive shield. Makelele etc.

Frenkie seems to be more of a Pirlo, Verratti, Jorginho, Kroos style midfielder. He just has elite dribbling which seems to confuse people I think.

The point being De Jong alongside a ball winner or high energy player seems ideal.

Pretty sure the poster was referring to someone who plays as no 6 since the question/discussion was about how him and Rodri can play together in 433.

But according to Ajax fans, that's where he plays, a DM. So to consider him NOT a DM is not true. Unless you are telling me that you know more about FDJ than the Ajax fan?

''to thrive'' means you need to perform consistently not inconsistently. The poster is right to questioned whether Pep can allow FDH to thrive if he plays as CM when he doesn't perform at Barcelona playing in 433 with Busquest as DM because he's not allowed to dictate the tempo and build up play from a deeper area like how he was given the role at Ajax and Dutch national team.

Appeal to authority is not a very good argument. I've laid down my reasons for thinking frenkie is not a DM. Being an ajax fan doesn't automatically make one's assessment right. For what it's worth I've been watching frenkie for nearly 4 years

Well, I only asked you whether you actually know more about FDJ than the Ajax fan. Don’t take into personal, but it’s normal to trust people who watched him at Netherlands and Ajax much more. The fact that you said ‘’nearly 4 years’’ shows why you thought he’s a CM because that’s where he played at Barcelona in the last 3 years but not at Ajax.

FDJ is not a DM. He played played deeper on the midfielder were usually a 6 is, but never was the/a DM. That role didn't exist at Ajax at the time nor does it exist when FDJ is the deepest midfielder in the Dutch NT(but it kinda exists when De Roon plays, but then FDJ isn't the deepest midfielder) and no sane Ajax fan would claim that FDJ was the/a DM. He might've played in that region, but never as a DM.

You said it's not a DM but called him a 6. In some people definition, DM can be viewed differently.

If we used your DM definition, then what I tried to say is that FDJ plays at best as no 6, which is not the same role he plays at Barcelona as an 8 (which the poster refers it as CM) in 433. Which is why there was another poster questioned how he's going to play in 433 with Rodri ocupied the no 6 role.

No he played at the position where the 6 normally is, but there was no DM in that Ajax team, not in the traditional way at least. All midfielders contributed defensively. But he's not a 6 or a DM. Sure he can play there, but he's more of a deep lying playmaker..

Why are City interested they already have an incredible squad with Haaland on the way ffs.
Pep is mental.
They probably need a squad player or to rotate with Rodri, as Fernandinho is leaving them this summer.

Pirlo is a 6 by the way. Use that as reference for the difference between how you and other people define what 6 is so you could understand the point of discussion of mine and the other posters' post.

It's mental to think they have the money and power to buy two top quality players on every position/role just for rotation. Given how Rodri has been rarely being rotated this season, they should just go for someone cheaper that has no issue to be Rodri's backup. For example, go for Phillips.

Haaland will cost quite abit I think they will go for someone cheaper. Don’t be surprised if they want Phillips (Leeds being relegated) or snap up Kamara on a free.

Tears. See what a decade of failure causes.
We are a second tier club.

But some posters would have you believe that missing out on top 4 is a good thing that would help our rebuild.

We are not in the market for these kind of players. Just the reality.
Disagree on kind. At least I hope we're looking for this kind. He's a too big a club though. So the profile is wrong.

Barcelona seemed to have so many problems at board level and yet they rebuild whilst retaining ucl football. Apparently we had to press the self destruct button.

Haaland and De Jong is like every United fans FM save.

Would be crazy if they both joined City.

Ah well there is always Rice for £80m.

Because they play in a league where even if they are rubbish for a while, they won’t fall below 4th. Barcelona would have easily missed out on the CL in recent seasons had they played in England. A poor season here gets you Europa or even EC. For Barca and Madrid, it takes too much for them to finish 5th and below.

Likewise teams like Dortmund can ‘guarantee CL football’. You need to be good enough to challenge for the actual CL to guarantee CL football in England, whereas you don’t in any other league.

Ajax fans said he's a DM. The main reason why he couldn't perform at Barcelona because he wasn't used as DM but playing as CM in midfield three.

De Jong played in Libero role at Ajax alongside Schone the deeplying playmaker. That's his best role to play deep in the area where DM plays and given free role.

From the man himself (ten Hag)

"He leaves the middle of the pitch too often for that (number 6) And if you don’t give him the freedom to go forward, you won’t get the best out of his game."

Think I may be in the same boat as you before long, @Samid :nervous:

Our last hope could be the Eurovision game. I'm not saying to rig it in my favour, but I'm also not saying don't either.

That quote was a response of someone asked whether FDJ can play as lone no 6 in 433.

He’s not wrong because his role was libero at Ajax while schone was the deeplying playmaker, both played as no 6 in 4231.

This is where we are unfortunately. Overpaying for British players who still think of United as a top tier club. United will always be a big lure to British born players, but the rest of the world currently doesn't care about United's footballing legacy.

Barcelona would not have missed any Champions League in the premier league. Last year they were a better team than United and this year better than Arsenal or Tottenham.
Even after a bad start this year.

United should try to sign Gaya or Soler, both in their final year with Valencia.
€20M each.

I disagree with those assertions. They have improved under Xavi, but prior to that, they would have struggled to finish top 4 in England. Chelsea, who finished 4th last year, would have probably beaten them comfortably. This year they ended up in the Europa League, finishing behind Benfica in their group. Real or Barca going through a tough spell will still mean ‘guaranteed CL football’. Teams in England who fall off can’t do that. Either you are in a genuine title race or you are reduced to hope.

And I thought Soler had agreed a new deal the other day?

Yeah sure, tell yourself whatever makes you happy. At your current state, if you were in the premier league you wouldn't make next seasons champions league.

And even Rice has made it clear that he'd prefer a move to Chelsea over us.

They didn’t care about PSGs or City’s either. As long as the club pay top dollar and have ambition they will always attract players.

At least try to reach Europa League final like us last season before making that statement .

Indeed. United finished second in the PL but Barca were a ‘better team’. I assume they would have won it then!
