We've only just said this past week we're prioritising midfield, whilst we were talking with Timber weeks/a month ago. It's easy to say we're prioritising midfield when players are rejecting us.
Well we're obviously not going to proceed in talks with Ajax, the player has rejected us. But the links to Timber started a matter of days after ten Hag was announced, even possibly the same day, de Jong has been spoken about the past few weeks.
So what you are saying is that if Timber doesn't reject us, we will right away proceed in talks with Ajax to sign Timber first before we proceed in talks with Barcelona to sign FDJ?? What makes you think that?
You might not realise this but discussing personal term doesn't mean the club will proceed it right away to buy/sign the player, they could put it on stand-by after securing the more priority ones to suit the budget.

Big shame imo. Timber is a massive talent, plays like a midfielder at the back. Him and De Jong instantly improve our ability to play out the back, something we've been crap at for ages.
By all accounts he would’ve cost around 35 million. Allocating over a quarter of our budget to replace our fourth choice centre back would’ve been the height of incompetence.

I fail to see how it would be incompetence. £35m is not a huge amount and he can also play RB. Given we only have three serviceable CBs who have all had injury problems last year we will definitely need a CB this Summer.

35m is a decent chunk and it’s not the sort of money you spend on squad players when you need another keeper, right back, two starting midfielders and at least another forward. The first XI should be the priority.
That's why I said he also plays RB. We will definitely be getting a CB this Summer so it would make sense.
But he wouldn’t be our starting full back as the reports say he turned us down over a lack of first team football. So he’d be a squad player.
Nobody can really be guaranteed first team football moving to a new club so it could just be he doesn't want the uncertainty of trying to nail down a place in a new team in a new league, which is a step-up, so close to the World Cup.
Guaranteed first team football isn't the same as first team football. Getting a cb thats guaranteed to start over Varane and Lindelof for instance isn't that likely. They'll compete with them and might get pushed out to full back, or just get dropped for a while if they dont instantly take to the league.

Timber feels he has more guarantee to get more minutes at Ajax (assume if he plays poor or get injured will need to wait for his chance) than at United (likely to be dropped if he plays poor or won't get straight to the first XI after recovers from injuries) before the World Cup. Doesn't mean he would be squad player.
End of the day, I don't think we will prioritise to sign a CB before de Jong or midfield after losing Matic and Pogba, while we haven't get rid Bailly, Tuanzebe and etc.
Yeah the first XI definitely needs at least 5 players for it, however if you are looking at squad depth it probably requires 7.
Yeah rebuilding that midfield is without doubt top priority, this will help our CB's not get so exposed. Then we need to focus on improving our RB situation and either a RW or number 9.
