The biggest point in that article is we're haggling over €10-15 Million. When shareholders are getting £11 Million in dividends on June 24th.

There is your problem.

Truth is it comes out of a different pot, a different budget so that 11m in dividends means nothing in regards to this transfer.

Our budget has been set, in the past fans would complain if we overspend and now with Murtough we're ensuring clubs don't take the piss and now that's not good enough.

We will get him, and it will be on our terms.

All makes sense.
I wouldn't be too bothered if Frenkie was the only player we bought and we integrated Hannibal and Garner into the match day squad and we kept Amad and Pelistri.
The guy is supposed to be a brilliant methodical coach with a high workrate and he demands the same from his players so if we even get that from the existing players it is going to be a massive improvement on last season.
Totally agree my guy.

Also - some of our youth may even take over spots from some of our useless starters.. specially this first season under ETHs reign.. if there’s ever any of our youth may stake a claim in the squad it’s this upcoming season..

Precisely.

I didn't know so many people here have such tiny testicles. Clueless on how negotiations work --- or certainly have not participated in any before.

They will get ripped off royally at any wet market in Bangkok over some t-shirts.

Yes everyone is clueless everything has to be dragged out

Buy high, sell cheap, every summer. We'd be bankrupt in no time.

Or he could be the next Pogba.

No he couldn't.

The boy is down to earth, zero flashing bullshit nonsense regular football player who excels at his job as a world class midfielder.

Extra bonus is that his former manager, the man who helped him get to that world class status is now our manager.

He's gonna make us ten times the better team.

It's a no brainer.
Anyone who watches football on a daily basis can see this.

Remove Modrić out of either Real or Croatia team, and you get a non cohesive group of players without a leader.

De Jong is going to be that man at Manchester United.

The glue that sticks us together and cracks over the rough spots in the team.

I don’t think he will, but of course he could fail to live up to expectations. Especially when people say he will make us 10 times better. Because on his own he won’t

He definitely looks a better fit for what we want from a CM than Pogba ever was

Pogba was a luxury player at Juventus who we bought and tried to 'mature' him into being a disciplined CM. De Jong will play exactly where we want him to because it's where he wants to as well

I bet you were making similar bold claims about our defence with Varane last year.

That's what we do anyway mate. Haggling over 10 mill for Frankie when we can't even negotiate a proper fee for Henderson is funny.

TBF. We can usually extract premium prices when we sell only when the club is in a top position. Clubs will pay a premium for (even disposable) United players because they want to bring over that winning mentality. Remember how we used to fleece other clubs -- the Evertons, Newcastles etc?

Once we get back to the top of the mountain, then we will be in a position to fleece others by commanding premium pricing.

The fans complained about overspending 130m pounds on two players like Maguire and AWB. Or spending 40m pounds on youth players like Pellistri and Amad as panic buys. Haggling over 10m for one of the best midfielders in Europe is ridiculous, especially one with qualities that will transform our midfield. Just look at Arsenal, they were penny pinching and it led them to being 8th for consecutive years. Spend 200m~ in consecutive summers has led them to finish 5th, it's still not enough for them.

We need a completely new midfield, we need a RW, we need a striker, and we need a RB. This is the summer we need to make 6~ signings in order to compete for top 4 next season. It makes no sense that this is the summer that they've decided to give the squad so many little resources to contend with over the summer.

We are in big danger of being further left behind if the Glazers don't take this seriously.

Henderson didn’t start a PL game last season
Lingard barely came off the bench
Mata didn’t make a PL start until the end of the season
Pogba - couldn’t depend on him and waiting for his next injury
Cavani same
Matic played one game needed the game after to recover

So basically it’s not as if we lost 6 starters we lost 1 starter who is always picking up injuries.
Also we have a bloated squad so 2/3 signings would sort out the numbers.
Albeit not sorting out the overall squad quality

Yes the players we lost weren't important, but the issue is that our MAIN STARTING XI already had major holes in it. Holes that will take 5 signings to fix, at least. Like think about it: ,We don't have a right winger. 0 right wingers. (no, youth loanies don't count); our only main goal scorer last season was a 37 year old Ronaldo. we need a striker, this isn't a debate; we need a midfielder to take over Mctominay's position as the deepest lying midfielder (De Jong); we need a midfielder to be able to dictate play and distribute the ball from box to box, because Fred isn't good enough (no, 4 months of good form doesn't overwrite 3 years of mediocrity); we need a defensively strong midfielder, a midfield destroyer to complement De Jong.

This is the bare minimum we need to plug the biggest holes in the squad. Notice this still isn't enough for us to fix the RB position; fix our CB position, because Varane is injury prone and Maguire right now is a huge question mark; and midfield back up signings to cover in case our midfielders get injured (cause I do not ever want to see Mctominay playing for us ever again).

Our other players (Sancho, Rashford etc) struggle because our team is dysfunctional. We need to get rid of that dysfunction for others to get back at their level too. Obviously we can't all do this in one summer, but in my opinion the bare minimum to compete for top 4 is 5 signings. Anything less and you're basically throwing away the season, because the other clubs are becoming much much stronger than we are atm.

Just 2 signings and our squad isn't even better than it was at the start of last season.

Problem is, United have lost 6 first teamers. Henderson is off too. Van de beek is the only loan returnee who’ll likely stay and get first team opportunities. So United are going to need to sign 5-7 players this summer and seem only capable of negotiating one deal at a time.

It shouldn't come out of any pot. They've taken almost 150 million out since 2010 and no other PL clubs owners take any.

Whether that money went on Transfers, the stadium or whatever it doesn't really matter. The fact our Football side have to operate with budgets that are set with dividends in mind, shows the root of the problem.

We have been doing that for decades and yet... here we are!!! We are a giant money printing machine.
The machine is slowing down after the last few years of terrible decisions (which would have been even more costly if some here had their way).

Nothing to do with not selling/letting players go whilst ‘negotiating’ for a single player the whole window

Frenkie will be the engine that makes every other part of United work... I hope. He isn't the flash sort of player like a Pogba in the middle of the park. But the foundation on which an ETH philosophy works.

I bet in a year's time people will be whinging about how come we paid so much for someone who doesn't score or create assist like a De Bruyne. And why we wasted so much time on him.

Nuance.

A bit much. I think you overestimate him greatly. Not that he isn't good, but I do not share your faith in his abilities. I think he carries a lot more risk than not at that fee and his wages. Blockbuster transfers like this rarely work out, especially for us. I'd rather we scout hard and find cheaper alternatives. We could have two or maybe even three players for that price. I do not know who, but that's what scouts are paid to do after all.

I've already expressed my concerns regarding this transfer before, I do not think it's a good idea, but I will defer to Ten Hag's judgement. If he needs him then he needs him.

True but I suspect we will be on the upswing again. United is about excitement and drama. On the edge of your seat type football. A theatre.

LVG killed all that for a number of years. Hopefully, we have a new & improved version of the Dutch Way.

Nobody wants our players. You think if someone came along with a £10m offer for Jones today he wouldn't be straight out the door?

The club should and will haggle over every deal anyway so this isn't really the point you think it is.

EDIT: That's not to say the owners aren't cnuts who shouldn't be taking dividends.

So you don’t think we need a backup keeper?

I saw: £10M/Jones.

I nearly choked on my drink when I rapid scanned the page and your comment. Then I realised its context. :(

Money has been offered for our players and we have turned it down. Jones is not the only player.
Lingard, Bailly, Martial and more we have had various offers for over the years.
Other clubs manage to sell their deadwood. Maybe we are were just not that good at negotiating

You expect a football club not to haggle over deals? Us just giving whatever anyone wants was wrong, now we're doing the opposite that too is wrong?

On how negotiations work. I doubt that, unless negotiations only happen in football
People aren’t clueless - as in a child understands how it works - but there’s a lot of people in panic mode already, purely based off other club’s activity which has zero relevance to what happens at United.

Pool just overpaid massively for an unproven player who looks equally as likely to be a flop as a big hit, City met a buyout clause (hardly incredible negotiations) and Spurs have signed a player who might go to jail and faced no competition.Given we’re clearly focused on De Jong, who is only being considered because Barca are desperate for cash rather than looking to sell, criticism will be if he then turns us down after we reach a fee agreement (we should have assurances already on personal terms) or if we have no back up targets should we refuse to meet a price (which is completely fine by the way).

For 1 the post I replied to said people were clueless about how negotiations work.

Secondly people are in panic mode not purely based of inactivity this summer but the results of all the previous summers. I think its understandable people get worried if they see similar patterns play out. People are only human.

Saying that I’ll be reserving judgement for
1. Start of preseason
2. Start of the season
3. End of the window

Window opened June 10th… United historically sign loads of players and get big names, the issue hasn’t been attracting talent or paying fees it’s been signing the right players. Only window that resembles what you’re implying is Moyes’ summer window.

It's not even haggling, it's meeting in the middle yet people are dissatisfied whatever the club does these days.

You know we're all creaming over Modrić when he makes the simple passes and turns....outside foot assists, etc....

Yeah, prepare to do that with De Jong on a regular basis.

He's gonna be the new David Silva.

Be joyfull! Rejoice!

Well at least we know there’s no actual plan beyond “let’s try and sign whoever the manager wants and if that doesn’t work we’ve got whatever shite is left come the end of July”
