All makes sense.
I wouldn't be too bothered if Frenkie was the only player we bought and we integrated Hannibal and Garner into the match day squad and we kept Amad and Pelistri.
The guy is supposed to be a brilliant methodical coach with a high workrate and he demands the same from his players so if we even get that from the existing players it is going to be a massive improvement on last season.
He's a coach, not a magician with a magic wand. I'm seeing this all over the place. "Maybe ten Hag will make our mediocre players way better than they currently are." It's not going to happen. Look at Klopp, arguably the best manager in the league and capable of squeezing every juice out of his players. How many so called academy youths do you see being a main part of his starting XI? Look at Pep, how many youths from their academy do you see in his starting XI?
The reality is for the vast majority of clubs, even the elite ones like PSG, Bayern, and Real Madrid it's considerably rare for youths from the academy to develop into good to great players. Manchester United fans are stuck in this infinite loop of constantly hoping for another 92' generation, always shoehorning academy players that are clearly not good enough for their preferred starting XIs. I love our culture for promoting youth, but sometimes it goes too far; it's literally the reason McTominay managed to start for us for 3 years when he'd probably struggle to start for a relegation club.
Even Barcelona with arguably the greatest academy amongst elite clubs and just came off one of the greatest golden generations is constantly spending to add players to their squad. They're going to add 6+ players to their squad this summer, at least.
ten Hag is not going to develop our academy talents and make us compete against the top with them. What it takes to compete at the highest is to do what every elite club (bayern, real madrid, PSG, City, Liverpool) does in the world: buy talents from all over Europe. Why is it that we're arrogant enough to think signing 2-3 players a window whilst leaving MASSIVE holes in the squad will be enough to have us compete with the rest in Europe? Seriously, we've made no significant additions to the centre midfield position roles since FRED in 2018.
I don't know if Amad, Elanga and Pellistri are going to good or great in the future, but right now they're evidently not good enough. We need a quality RW, or at the very least a talented one ready to regularly start for a top 6 club. We need quality midfielders. Not one in De Jong, not two, but multiple talented players in the role to compete with the rest of the top 6. It's what everyone else is doing. All of them have strong midfields, even Arsenal. We have one of the weakest midfields in the league.
We are not special. We cannot continue to think we'll compete while persistently refusing to fix all the holes in the squad, naively thinking our youths can do a good enough job throughout the season.
2-3 players will have our squad equivalent to what we had last season. If the glazers aren't willing to overspend and give us the required players (about 5 to 6) we need to even start competing for top 4 next season, let alone challenge for a title, then they honestly aren't taking this seriously and neither do they realize just how unbalanced and disastrous the current squad is. In other words, nothing will have changed from Woodward's era.
