Manchester United remain in the hunt to sign Frenkie de Jong. #MUFC [Simon Jones, Mail]

I like the use of the word ‘hunt’ - implying there is any other team interested in him. It seems clear now that the choice for Frenkie is stay where he isn’t wanted or come to United where he is, and that will depend on how much more Barca push him out.

Come on Frenkie lad, Erik, Mitch and Donny are waiting for you! Let’s go!

It also implies he’s trying to escape us, which is apt.

The only things making this a “saga” is the constant journalistic bullshit and redcafe’s obsession with De Jong, who is not as good as people on here believe.

For two months the situation remains the same:
- United wants him
- Barcelona wants to sell
- He doesn’t want to go

Of course he wants his 17 million that Barcelona owe him. But he also clearly wants to play for them. He never expressed any kind of interest in joining United. That’s why he won’t.
ETH wants him, and I believe he is getting “positive” signals.
But my take is that De jong and his team are just using United as bargaining tool.

If Barcelona pay him what he’s owed (they won’t), he’ll declare his lifetime love and commitment to them very publicly.

If they don’t, I see him going down the golfer path of Gareth Bale, whilst taking them to the court, rather than joining United.

He never expressed the slightest interest in joining us.

Of course I hope I’m totally wrong and all this fan drama was worth it, because De Jong is the next great United thing.
But what are the odds currently ? :wenger:

1/2 Barca
9/4 Utd
4/1 Any German Club
8/1 Bayern
12/1 Chelsea

I have to question our commitment. We need about 40 pages per day, for 8 days, to get to 2000. Can we do it?

Depends on how many actual updates there is. Each tweet is worth 3-4 pages at least.

There hasn't been an update since we agreed a deal with Barca more than 8 weeks ago and the thread has grown by 1300 pages in that period. This thread isn't playing by the normal rules of muppetry - it is operating on a higher plane of existence.

I will sacrifice one of my 3 allowed posts a day to help us muppets get to 2000 pages. HOWEVER, i expect some likes in return. I know, I know….shameless as ever.

If we get those two then yes. If not, No! Sad to say.
Yes, you're probably correct, Frenkie and Antony are both major pieces in the blueprint to have us functioning as a complete team, and the right (for so long neglected) pieces at that. Hopefully even the Glazers, let alone the Board can see the benefits.

Assuming there are no other incoming players apart from those two, as the season goes on, it would leave us knowing precisely the type of players we need to be targeting for those final 3 positions we need to address, GK RB ST, and a year to do our homework properly and prepare bids early whilst still being competitive enough this year to be in with a shout in all competitions.

It also looks like we will have far better depth to the squad this year than we have enjoyed for quite a while; but we need to hang on to McFred this year too though.

Ah well, fingers crossed we get both Frenkie and Antony - and a trophy or two - what an incredible turn around that would be, from what was developing into the worst closed season in history to the best, especially when Sir Jim Ratcliffe's interest in purchasing the club is factored in.

Anyway, who to target for those final three positions though...

I don’t think we’re going to make it. Unless…

It would be a pity, wouldn't it? We came so close to get 2,000 pages and Frenkie... but don't give up, everyone working together, we can still make it. Or else, the manager will make us run 13 km. What do you prefer?

Just imagine.

DDG
Dalot - Varane - Martinez - Malacia
Casemiro - De Jong
Antony - Bruno - Sancho
Martial

We replace Maguire, Shaw, Fred, McTominey in one window.

Add Gakpo into that, and we have a team. FDJ is a vital piece in the rebuild to challenge for top4 or EL.

barca have tried their best to force him out the door without paying him his full backwages.

I just wonder what the next move is? They have another umtiti situation on their hands, except this time its multiple players.

We have Antony joining us first. THEN De Jong liking that tweet, with a retweet “Welcome, bro!” from himself. That alone would be worth about 100 pages.

Following with an Ornstein tweet about “new movement from De Jong camp”,with Romero claiming the same thing. Tuchel coming out and say Chelsea cannot compete financially. That’s another 100 pages for you.

We get to the weekend with De Jong NOT in training and not in the squad list. By this point I expect that Ajax journal to sprout some stuffs about medical soon in 1-2 days. We are in dreamland after demolishing Southampton, with Casemiro running our midfield. That’s another 100 pages.

Romano with his usual tap-in “Here we go” will wait exactly for our victory against Southampton to maximize our excitement and retweets. We spend the whole Sunday tracking planes from Barca and exceed the final 2000-page mark.

That’s how it’d go in my head.

Sounds like a plan! Let's do it guys!

We take this thing in 6-hour shifts, around the clock, a global muppetry masterclass. We can start quoting posts from the early pages, just to complete the snake eating it’s own tail / circle jerk motif.

We can do it.

Make Muppetry Great Again.

I think there will be something on Friday. Hopefully news that Barca have agreed to pay De Jong what he's rightfully owed and he's en route to Manchester for a medical.

But I think a lot depends on moves for their other players, which could come as late as the final few days of the window.

One way or another, please let this saga end, so this thread can die. The same recycled jokes, and “big day today” proclamations every page, like it’s suddenly become funny the 11,647th time it’s said. I used to love the days of a transfer saga thread, with Olly’s gifs etc. But this is just tired nonsense.

Transfer deadline can’t come soon enough.

The club has briefed regarding this transfer. So it's basically not happening.

But alas, when has that stopped true Muppets
