Unless we're suddenly satisfied with McTominay and Fred, we desperately need a player of de Jong's quality. Whether it shall come to pass is an open question.

We beat the better side today but it had a strong whiff of smash and grab to it. This was not ETH football. To get to where ETH wants us to be we need better midfield play than McTominay and Fred could ever give us. Casemiro will help, but he's the final piece of the midfield puzzle.

Oh yeah he is vital but looks highly unlikely

Arnold & Murtough this is the deal we need more than even Antony. So get yourselves out to Spain and get it done this time.

De Jong admit it deep down you would really flourish alongside Casemiro so come somewhere you will be treated properly.

There has been considerable discussion on this point in the now-legendary Transfer Forum thread on Frenkie, but it actually seems a bit more than highly unlikely that Frenkie will move to the Manchester.

Barcelona are desperate -- not just interested, but desperate -- to sell Frenkie to alleviate their financial condition.
Xavi has no use for Frenkie, given the options he already has at his disposal.
Barcelona fans will make Frenkie's life miserable for years to come if he doesn't leave now.

Frenkie will leave by September 1, of that I have no doubt. But with Bayern now alleged mulling over a more for him, if that's real then we're done and dusted. But if Bayern interest is not real, we've got a real shot at landing him.

Yeah Bayern are a concern but we have been in for him since around May, therefore surely that shows we are willing to do whatever it takes.

First of all, no, Barca are not desperate to sell him. Kounde is the last player to be registered which will be done now Auba to Chelsea is near. Memphis leaving makes that even easier. I can be wrong of course but I highly doubt Xavi accepts Frenkie leaving this late in the window if Bernardo Silva isn't guaranteed to join as a replacement, this was reported throughout the saga as a condition of Xavi letting him leave.

Fans won't make his life miserable unless he starts dropping 1/10 performances, as with any player. We had a few idiots shouting abuse at him but for the most part, nothing has really changed in their perception - many cules actually want him to stay. Remember people were saying "Barca will exile him" then he goes on preseason tour. "Barca will bench him" and then he starts. "Barca will play him at CB" and then he plays in midfield.

No chance he gets loaned to Bayern with a buy option, that is the most ridiculous scenario yet, gifting a player of this quality to a CL rival weakening us. Not to mention, Bayern have better midfielders than him already. It's between United and Chelsea.

I agree that Barca is not desperate to sell him, and that the posters here heralding the doom of Barca (at least financially) are widely off the mark.
However, I believe it is also the best for Barca to offload him this season (or the next season once you get his replacement in) due to his wages, unless they can somehow get him to agree to a pay cut. There is also the elephant in the room, Busquets the ancient, to be replaced asap despite Xavi loving him, so thats 2.

Frankly, a sale to United or Chelsea now/next season will suit all parties including FDJ because Barca’s formation doesn’t have a place for his best position. Bayern would probably be the worst move for him both financially and sportingly

Out of respect I must defer to a Barcelona when it comes to the inner workings of Barcelona.

But is it not true that Barcelona are strong-arming Frenkie to take a massive wage cut and have even threatened to dissolve the contract on the legal theory that the contract was criminally entered into, similar in some respects to what we in the United States describe as a contract of adhesion?

If any of this is true, I don't know how else to describe the state of relations between the club and player as anything other than appalling. Frenkie took the deferral in good faith but is now being told that he has to forfeit those deferred wages or else he'll be frozen out of the squad by the manager?

I've seen a lot of abuse from Barcelona fans toward Frenkie on Facebook, which I admit is a skewed demographic but is nevertheless not nothing.

No one can accurately predict the future. Maybe Frenkie does hold his ground with Barcelona and BOTH refuses to leave the club AND refuses to take the wage cut and forfeiture of deferred wages already earned. Or maybe he sees the light of the club's greatness and agrees to the club's demands. But Frenkie would still have the problem of being surplus to the requirements of the manager, which is not a good place for a player entering his prime years to be in. But what we do know is that if the club trashes Frenkie for being "selfish" and so on, club supporters will jump on the bandwagon. If Frenkie really going to be ok with that? Perhaps, perhaps not.

OK, look, I have to ask. Set aside the meme-ing and the "muppetting" for a minute.

Are there still people who really believe he will come here? Like, actually believe that? No way, right? :nervous:

I absolutely do believe we still have a chance to sign him. I'm not convinced he'll move, though. If he does, it will be to us

I mean if Murtough is flying to Barca to push this, then there is still a small chance.

There is this Twitter account with Rubyred (I know by name itself we shouldn’t trust)!!

But he claims Frankie to Utd is done!! He said no body took him seriously but he will sign this week!!

Some rando on Twitter David Kent @DK_Reports has put this up:

"| Manchester United have agreed a deal for Frenkie De Jong. Deferred wages has been paid by Barcelona, player is scheduled for Medical on Wednesday in Manchester. #MUFC ⏳ ✅"

Followed up with:

"Correction: Medical in Barcelona then he flies to Manchester. Less time wasted."

I do. I have believed all along that whatever happened with FDJ’s wages, United / ETH had had assurances from the player and Barca that this could / would get done.

If Murtough is there last night, it is to get it done IMO. I may end up being disappointed but I’ve always felt this is more on than off. More when than if. He’s ours.

The only time wasted here is me replying to this and you finding these ITKs.

Look at the difference between Casemiro and De Jong. One is calling us the biggest club in the world, the other is being dragged to us kicking and screaming. Please can we stop buying players that do not want to play for the club.
I’m just asking now but is there any quote from FDJ or his camp saying he specifically does not want to come here? All I’ve heard is general speculation that looks made up.

Looks like they have finally managed to get Umtiti off the books with Aubamayeng & Depay also likely to go, I'm not even sure they need to sell him anymore. Can't see it happening at all lads, hope I'm wrong.

Feck sake:lol:.I love the correction part.
I think we'll get De Jong but these ITK'S are embarrassing.

Putting muppetry aside for a second, it's pretty clear he's not exactly chomping at the bits to come here. I don't believe for a second he'd reject us and join someone else, but if he was dying to reunite with ETH, all parties would've found a way to get it done. So there is a clear difference to Casemiro, in addition to that 17m.

All that said, we'll still sign him. While he may not be super hyped about joining United, I'm sure he's more than happy to come here if he has to leave Barca
