Honestly baffled by this transfer. Don't get me wrong I would have him in our squad yesterday but the guy just doesn't want to come here. So why are we wasting our time chasing a player that would rather stay at Barca?

There’s been so so so many players who have been forced out of clubs for many reasons who have gone on to be great for other times. He’s a professional footballer, he’s not going to sulk and pull a strop. They don’t want him, and he knows it.

This has Di Maria written all over it. Wonder what his mood is going to be if we miss CL next season as well?

Seems a bit odd does it :smirk:

There must’ve been some dialogue between Ten Hag and De Jong.. positive signs if we’re in contact with Barca.
I think so. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense. His departure looking similar to Messi.

We are not talking directly to another club for a player that does not want to come. It's simple, when Barca tell him he has to leave, he will sign.

85m, years since he played his best fotball, dont want to leave Barca, wants CL fotball. So fecking stupid to chase him  I can also see City or PSG join the party late and feck up the deal.

I think this would be a god awful signing if we didn't have ETH. I think that this is probably not a great signing even though we do have ETH.

I'm absolutely shocked nobody has likened this to the Di Maria scenario from a few years back.

Would have no worries about him playing well under Ten Hag to be honest.

We shouldn't buy him because his best years are passed him at 25 but we'll also be gazumped by City or PSG if we try?

I'm not sure about your logic there fella.

Well because Barcelona need cash and are prepared to sell him in order to raise money to register other players. If we’re in direct contact with them it means we’ve had some encouragement to pursue this deal further. I’m sure FDJ will get over it rather quickly if Barca are pushing him out the door. Also the big difference between this and the Di Maria situation is we have ETH, a manager he’s worked well under previously and has a good relationship with.

It's happening boys, no chance we are negotiating without Frenkie saying yes.

I think he will leave if Barca accept the bid.

Ref yesterday's comments as well where FdJ basically said something alone the lines of club hasn't accepted an offer yet, so I'm calm.

Why do those two “powerhouse” clubs want a player who is already passed his best according to you? Are they clueless as well then?

If we blow 85M on him, and whatever money is quoted for Timber, thats our budget then? We need to sign at least one attacker imo.

Manchester united is still the biggest club in the world.. Playing for this club is a privilege..
One season without champions league is not the end of the world.
Here, FDJ would be adored if he puts a real shift.
He would be the main man here, and ETH will build the team around him.

I think this is a case of ETH saying “that’s my absolute number one target, lets try to get him at all costs” so the club are trying really hard on this one before moving on to backup targets for midfield.

I can't understand why people are so perplexed by this transfer.

Frenkie de Jong is happy playing for the club he supported as a boy. Although he doesn't think he's being used correctly positionally, he loves the club and wants to stay. He knows there are financial issues at the club but until hes told he's for sale his focus and desire is on staying at Barcelona.

If you asked Beckham the same questions during his united career you would have gotten similar answers.

However, circumstances change. Whilst Barcelona might want to explore other options so that they can keep FDJ the reality of their situation is that they will probably end up having to sell him. At that point he will accept his fate.

At no point has he said he doesn't want to come here or that he prefers to go to another club. If he arrives he will be working with a manager who knows him and his game.

Plenty of players have been sad to leave their clubs but gone on to play well elsewhere. People keep comparing this to Di Maria (who actually started well at United). What went wrong was his poor relationship with the coach, his inability to adjust to the northern European culture and weather and then his house getting robbed. FDJ is unlikely to experience any of these issues as he's from Northern Europe, will have compatriots in the squad and is loved by the coach.

Very few players will leave a starting role at a champions league contender to play in a team that barely qualified for the europa league. If he didn't have reservations about joining us you would have to question his ambition.

However given Barcelonas situation and the fact his former coach is here with the intention to make us into regular champions league qualifiers I believe FDJ will happily come here once he's officially told by Barcelona that they don't want to keep him for financial reasons.

We definitely will spend more money than the media would have you believe. I wouldn’t worry about the budget too much. Plus don’t think we will actually pay the full 85 for him.

Nobody knows what is our budget.Twitter vultures are clueless. After late Mino Raiola fiasco nobody should take them seriously.

Because he will be forced to leave then he has to find a new club to join and play for his career. Do you expect him to just retire from football if his boyhood club decided to sell him? Of course not. Beckham still needed to continue his career after leaving man united. Alan smith still needed to continue his career after leaving Leeds united. If he can’t longer play for his favourite club then he can still play for the manager he used to work with and happy to work with aka Erik ten hag.

Doesn't really work like that. Our budget for a window will never be a hard number. It will all depend on the structure of the agreements

Does anyone else think this has "Di Maria" written all over it by any chance???

Which option is better ? For the same money

A) De Jong + di Maria vibes - £70m
B) Tielemens + Bissouma - £70 - 75m

I like second option more :nervous:

Not necessarily, we might be able to pay in installments. This would help stretch the transfer budget.

I think this is happening.

De Jong's stance will change (if it hasn't already) when it becomes clear Barca want rid of him.

If this is a key piece of the jigsaw ETH needs to build his United team, then I'm fully behind him.
