Everyone is missing the more obvious Fabragas reference

A new Man Utd manager realizes his CM's are below par, so he is trying to sign a CM from Barcelona who signed for big money a couple of years ago, the player doesn't really want to leave Barcelona even though he isn't playing as much or performing as well as he could be.

It's the same thing. Except then we were Champions.
But Fabregas had 4/5 outstanding years in the premier league with arsenal so everyone knew the level he could reach - you can’t say the same for FDJ - he’s only really proven himself in the Dutch league and a few outstanding champions league performances

If we blow 85M on him, and whatever money is quoted for Timber, thats our budget then? We need to sign at least one attacker imo.

No free transfers floating about unfortunately.

Hopes and prayers that one of Elanga, Hannibal, Amad or Pellestri will step up on the RW and Rashford / Garnacho as backup CF.

People look at a transfer budget - lets say that it is £120m this summer - and think that we spend 85m on De Jong & 35m on Timber and that's us done, but there's more to it than that. For example last summer we signed Sancho and Varane with transfer fees to be paid over (I think) 5 years & 4 years respectively. On paper we spent around 110m on those two players but last summer our outlay could have been as low as 25m. Barcelona would probably want a front-loaded structure on a De Jong deal because of their circumstances, but its highly unlikely that we will pay them in full.

Obviously it still affects our budget planning but the impact on wage bill is probably more important

Thanks for explanation my understanding is When Clubs talks about transfer budgets they are mostly talking about the amount they are ready to commit on players in terms of fees whether it's paid in installments or upfront .

As you stated Last year though our outlay might have been just 25 m for fresh transfers but still we had to pay the rest of the amount just like we had pay installments for our other transfers over the years .

Most of Clubs calculations would be based on fees paid in installments when it comes to transfers ,only scenarios where I see Club being impacted by payment terms is when substantial Fees are demanded upfront that might create issue or two in terms of cash flow.

We should probably concentrate on Jeff Hendrick then. We know he can do it in the Premier League.

Sounds like there's been a brief with journos reporting both clubs are in active negotiation

Any idea how we can look up existing commitments? (e.g., how much will we pay for Sancho, Varane, Ronaldo etc. etc.)

This saga is a great example of why I despise this transfer tweet culture we have nowadays. Without the rumour mill and people so willing to feed on whatever they read, we'd simply have an announcement at some point that United had signed De Jong, and without exception our fanbase would be ecstatic that we'd managed to sign such a quality midfielder.

Instead, no matter what happens from here and whatever the player says (should he sign), there will be a faction of our fanbase subconsciously waiting or even wanting him to fail so they can all say 'See! I told you he didn't want to come". It's tainted before it's even bloody happened.

I was thinking similar.

We all know how this is going to turn out if we sign him. A player who does not want to leave being sold against his will. As so many are saying, it's happened before. In fact, it's happened twice before when a dutch player is forced out of a Spanish club. I'm getting Robben/Sneijder vibes.
You had me in the first half, I was already priming myself for yet another di maria reference, well done.

We wouldn't be in active negotiations if he wasn't interested at all.

You have to start with a higher bargaining position. If this happens, it will probably be for the reported 70mil

Yeah, he is hardly going to retire because Barcelona are forcing him out of the club. Some people make it sound like he will be so heartbroken he might never mentally recover...
I think a deal will be done for around €60m. Graham Hunter recently said that Barca were briefing the media about wanting 75m to 80m, but they'll except less.

And for me this move has the potential to have a similar impact to Wesley Sneijder who also didn't want to leave his club in Spain. Robben is another player that didn't want to leave Madrid but Bayern's Dutch head coach came calling and Robben reluctantly left Real Madrid.

I think we already reached a personal agreement with him, wouldn't open the negotiations otherwise.

Would be nice instead getting a player that isn't reluctant to join unless we offer a boatload of money

I didn't say the situations were identical in every way. But people are comparing FDJ to the Di Maria thing, when Fabregas is much more similar.

Surely you see how its more similar than ADM

And who exactly is this CL club who want to sign him ?

City is the only one I can think of and they already have enough.

For top talents that's only going to be the case again when we get sorted out on the pitch and can offer a competitive project capable of winning trophies

Undoubtedly we would have a broad number in mind but whenever we see a figure published in the media I would take it with a pinch of salt because it's always based on a number of factors, and those factors change throughout the window. Writers simply like to put a hard figure on these things because it makes a good headline.

De Jong, who is reluctant to leave Barcelona, does not view United as a prime destination should he have to depart. Their lack of Champions League football next season is a major stumbling block to convincing the 25-year-old to join, particularly when there will be other interested clubs.

 its like hes reading this thread

There is a potentially significantly roadblock here that prevents me from getting overly optimistic about this one. Similar to how Liverpool handled the Diaz deal, I think clubs will simply sit back and wait for United to agree a fee and then match our terms. Essentially letting us do all of the hard work for them. There's a good chance of us being gazumped here.

I think ten Hag is a significant factor for us and the player.
