Big day if you mean that Frenkie isn't going to jail, hell yes!

Every day is a big day as long as Frenkie is still a free man. Something just transcends football.

Jail is probably a better destination than Manchester United at the moment. Can’t rule the option out.

Barca play their first La Liga game on Saturday. Every day between now and Friday is a big day, otherwise they're not starting Lewa, Raphina, Dembele or anyone else caught up in this mess. Something has to give, one way or another, and soon.
There are only two options - either they sanction a 4th lever and do further LT damage for a ST fix or they sell De Jong and get his wages off the books. No one else in their squad will fetch them £50m+.

Seems that he has not the minimum idea to come to United, only a loss of time and money to pursue him

I believe this would have happened already if there was enough meat in the bones. FDJ knows that the United offer will always be on the table so isn’t worried about losing it. We are an underperforming club and can’t hope to give elite talent like him a deadline.

If and when he wants to move, he sure will have more options than just us. That’s why he is playing the waiting game and picking up his salary. He is at the prime of his career with minimal risk. It’s not prudent for him to scurry together a move when being forced by his current club.

At the rate Barcelona are going, FDJ will be able to sue them for damages to his reputation for far more than 17m

I wonder how much he is paying for legal advice at the moment. It will cost him a pretty penny if he does sue them if he wants to recover the lost money.

Get the feeling time will be an issue here. Even if they found a solution with De Jong today, a big transfer like this needs time. Neither United nor Chelsea agreed personal terms so far, so I'm not convinced selling him before they need to register players will be possible in the time frame at hand.

They could of course not register the guys for the first match but only for the second onwards

Finally, the term embarrassing is so apt in this situation.

Miki being targeted even though she has nothing to do with it might finally set Frenkie's heart on fire.
Leave Frenkie, run.

That would actually be the worst-case scenario for Barcelona. They risk losing a large transfer fee and w/o the transfer fee, de Jong will have lucrative offers from probably every big club.

I'm actually secretly hoping this happens to them.
They want him to sign another contract so he wouldn't be able to just walk away.

Welp the Barca fans are well and truly turning on him now. His reception isn't going to be pleasant whenever his name gets called out or he sees the pitch.

Absolutely gross, to treat a player like that, to drag his name in the press and put that on him. It's horrible to watch, and this is the club he's been a fan of since he was a kid. That's got to really hurt.

That a number of the fans seem to treat Barcelona under Bartomeu as an entirely different club as Barcelona under Laporta, almost as if they shouldn't face the consequences because it was a different regime. Utter blends, and cultists.

Last paragraph really grinds my gears as well. The club shoulders the consequences, not some egomaniac you voted into office, whatever his name is

So there is a chance we can get him for free.? And is it still 95% done.? Cock out time lads.?!

Why the optimism? Aren't Chelsea still the favourites if he decides to leave Barca which looks certain now.

Barca are a club that seems to be consistently caught completely unawares off the direct and obvious consequences or their own actions. Like an alcoholic who meets every new day in a state of wonderment about what went before.

This is so messy I just can’t see how this can get done, far too many moving parts.

Such a shame, quality footballer is Frenkie.

This is crazy, after applying so much pressure on him to leave or take a paycut, they decided to keep him? Have they not thought of actually paying off the guy? Anyway, maybe we should try Bernarndo Silva?
Not what we need, he wouldn't come here and City wouldn't sell to us. What's not to like? Let's go!

I didn't follow the whole thread, did Barca present any evidence for their claims or is it just "we found some criminal stuff, yeah totally, you better sign this new contract, because we really found criminal stuff"?
Basically what you’ve said.

Hahaha i love it.

"Frenkie you're a criminal, you stole money from us because your contract is invalid, you owe US the money. We'll take you to court and get our money back and you WILL take a pay cut because your on an illegal contract! Oh... but, please stay. We love you, just not enough to pay you what we're paying you now... but we DO love you"

If the new contract is invalid and the old contract thus still in effect, then surely Barca owe him the ~$18 million reduced salary from '20-21 and '21-22 that was spread out over the last four years of the new contract. And presumably owe him that regardless of whether he stays as they would have breached the contract by underpaying him. Plus, he'd only be tied down until 2024. This doesn't seem like something positive for Barca.

It is, because cash flow is not a problem right now. Barca has around €500m in cash lying around thanks to those levers. The problem is the huge Masa Salarial (wage+amortization) that hinders the registration. If those players are back on their previous contract, the current Masa Salarial reduces considerably for the upcoming season, since it doesn't look back, only forward. So I believe Barca is happy to pay them their deferred wages in those years if it means they earn half from now on and barca is able to register everyone.

Wouldn't that mean that Barcelona likely breached La Liga's salary cap last year? That would definitely attract some other form of penalty as they registered players showing players like de Jong on reduced contracts, which they are now saying are illegal.

Have you read the news today?

You can't lump on transfers anyway. They’re capped at fairly low amounts

They’ll flog their trophy cabinet on ebay, register their players and then not exist in two years time. But FDJ will hang about beyond August.

And yeah, by lump I mean like £5-10 but agreed that none of it is too appealing. Just think Chelsea at evens is ridiculous and I have zero faith in us signing anyone competent. FDJ probably has no issues with coming to United, but our board will still find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

If true, why doesn't Barcelona pay FdJ an advance payment for his 2022/23 wages backdated to last season. This would reduce his current wages even further.

This is nothing than creative accounting at it's worst in order to circumvent the la Liga FFP rules. Desperate times ahead.

Or, I gather, they could register one, maybe two of them, and leave the others in the stands but that obviously causes its own massive problems.

Over the past few days Puig has left, Pique has agreed a new contract, and whatever else they have managed in terms of sales and wage cuts... not a whole lot so far but I think we are about to see a bunch of news about the other players they want rid of either leaving or digging their heels in as well. We are focused on FDJ but his position has implications for them too if they are on similar deferred contracts. Even those that aren't can afford to play hardball over exit terms knowing how desperate Barca are to get people off the books to make this all work.

Barca are up a certain creek...
