This signing would be key because also attracts other targets skeptical of joining a team without Champions League

Understand where you're coming from, but I've seen both these players play under what, 3 or 4 different managers at this point. Not sure that Ten Hag can make them any better than what they are now - which is just not of the required level. Ten Hag is a brilliant coach and we've seen him turn players into something special, I'm just not convinced he can do it with Mctominay or Fred.

Houdini himself couldn't work his magic on those 2 lost causes.

Sooner they are out of the side the better.

I think the majority of my screaming this season was because of one those 2 doing something dreadful.

If you read this article (previously posted on here somewhere) https://tacticandtechnique.com/a-view-on-ajax-amsterdams-astonishing-2018-19-season/ FDJ was totally crucial in the build up and possession for Ajax. Based on this he has to be the number 1 target. I'm still annoyed we never got Modric way back when and we cant afford to miss out now.
This fella could be the most important midfield player since Scholes finished (I am not suggesting he is at Scholes level)
United should stop wasting time and be getting this done today imo.

This looks set to be this summer's drawn out transfer saga.

Hopefully we either get it done quickly or tell him to make up his mind by a certain date so we're not left looking silly.

I still have hopes for Fred. He has shown a bit of what he can do in a more advanced role under Carrick. Very valuable at creating high turnovers even if he is easily shrugged off by stronger players. I want us to play Fred, FdJ and Bruno for a bit this season to see if it works at all.

Barca wanting 80m euros for a player they are willing to sacrifice because of financial problems they've put themselves in, but refuse to pay any money for any players they want. Most delusional club in the world. Hope every club that has players Barca is interested in quotes them obscene "buyout clause" numbers like Barca do. You want Raphina? Pay his 500m "release clause" and we'll talk.

Netherlands have Nations League matches until 14th June.

We aren’t signing him nor Timber till after them I’d imagine.

Players can undertake medicals whilst on international duty, highly doubt after such a long season, the players are that fussed about these glorified friendlies.

Put him beside Fred or McTominay and we are failing before we started
This is a thing. You need players who are able to retain and show for the ball all around such a player who effortlessly create chains and move intelligently - if he comes here and we don't complement and facilitate his game, he won't be able to do what he is renowned for.

Needs a talented partner beside or just behind him and a skilful hub ahead of them, neither of which we have. For sure he'd be a great start, but bodies would need to come in around him.

Hannibal and Van de Beek would have a lot to play for in preseason, at least until we got other midfielders in because if we don't give someone like de Jong the conditions to succeed, we shouldn't even be looking in his direction in the first place.

First of all, the last board with Bartomeu put barca in this situation. The current board has nothing to do with the problems they inherited. Also where does barca refuse to pay for players? Can you elaborate this?
And about those obscene buyout clauses. You understand that barca sets them as high as possible so nobody can activate them? Before the oil money, 100-200m were quite enough to scare off potential buyers. Then one day some shady psg lawyer brought 200m in a suitcase and barca lost a franchise player. They got burned once and learned a lesson, that 200m isnt enough anymore for state sponsored playthings. So where is this barcas fault in obscene clauses to scare off buyers? You know that the spanish government forces buyout clauses right?

They're not bothers at all. KDB said a couple of days ago that the Nations League doesn't matter.

It really shouldn't impact transfers too much. Players will be more interested in getting a transfer sorted, settling at a new club and having a good pre-season before the world cup.

Where are all the battle hardened muppets??

Come on troops, a transfer like this takes time. So much noise around this it points to the clubs sorting out an amount and, rightly, convincing a good player to come to us. We are a shambles and a guy playing for Barcelona (in CL every year, good chance for domestic trophies) might need to think about the move.

Of course he is coming  stay the course, believe. Choo-choo.

I see a few posters comparing Frenkie to Modric, but I don't think that is right at all. Modric' passing (range) is much better, but Frenkie is much more dynamic and can break forward easier, advancing up the pitch with the ball at his feet.

Agreed.
But we all know that that won't happen.
Most of the players we have in our first XI are disgraceful and we will hang on to them, forcing the new manager to work with them.
It's as if the last 6 months didn't happen.
This is why I believe that our strategy hasn't changed. Essentially, the board make the decisions on what happens on the pitch and the players have all the power, no matter how badly they perform.
This has to change. Player power will ruin this club. We must get back to the way Fergie managed and I do hope we have the right manager this time.

Stay well clear.

He's getting forced out of Barca and has no interest in playing for United.

He has no interest of playing anywhere else currently except Barca. Till they tell him otherwise that's fair enough, but if they do say he is for sale then he will be more open to moving (may not be here but other places too)

Just because he doesn't want to leave, doesn't mean he will stay if the club want him sold

Give it a week and he will play the piano at Old Trafford while announcing that he finally signed for the bestest club in the world.

I actually think his responses are fine. No need for him to burn any bridge with the Barca fans. barca board will want it to look like he wanted to leave but he is not giving them that.
He also doesnt say he doesnt want to play for United or that he would only play for a Champions League club.

Tricky situation.
It's not in United's advantage this transfer drags on, we need new players. Time to explore other opportunities.

However, If Barca is really adamant on selling him then we should stay interested. It would be a darn shame if another club like Bayern or City steps in and signs him.

.

dude is literally being sold against all his objections, his utter lack of any desire to play for us, his dream club turfing him to the curb to fund a player that is almost at the end of his career, and it was only a few pages ago the idea is mocked that we should be weary about the situation.

This place is weird sometimes. :wenger:

Just drop this, please. If we do this transfer, this club hasn't learned a thing. Last thing we should do is buy players that do not want to play for United.

He comes out and says "well obviously if Barca sell me i'm going to have to listen to offers but this is my dream club" and people in this thread get excited? The bloke just made the comparision that the two options are never playing football again or playing football, i'll play football" and folks are hyped by this? :wenger:

i can't wait for the player thread comments; "why does De jong look so disinterested out there"

Can we stop trying to buy players that doesnt want to come to us.

He didn’t say he doesn’t want to play for us. He said he wants to play for Barcelona. So if Barcelona make that no longer an option, what do you propose he does? Retire?

He didn't even say that, it's a mix and mash of 2 answers. Europeanlad posted his interview.
