We tried Pogba in every role with every suggested formation and it didn't work.
Not really. In the entire six years he was here there were only two short periods we played him in a similar way as he mostly played at Juventus. In his first season with a Carrick-Herrera-Pogba combo, which was the best our team played that season. And then when Ole first took over when we played Matic-Herrera-Pogba and had the best performances since Fergie (and Pogba himself had his best ever performances). Those were the only two times we actually played a balanced midfield with Pogba in a more attacking/free role.

Otherwise he was either in one of the deeper positions himself, or he was played next to two midfielders who had no creativity or playmaking capabilities so he ended up having to play deeper anyway.

Sad that we are excited for a player who doesn't really want us. Just shows how far we have fallen.

Because at the end of those periods teams found him out, and he was useless.

Totally in the dark here, but why do Barcelona want to sell? Are they still in desperate need of money?

I think they do need to balance their books.
He's playing in a position where they have two young and promising players coming through.
Plus, I think he's on the biggest salary at Barcelona right now.

So, for me, it would make sense to for them to cash in and strengthen other areas.

Yes, but also they are hamstrung by Spanish FFP and will not be able to sign/register new players if they don’t take action. FDJ is indeed of their highest earners so if they want Lewandowski for example, Frenkie has to make way.

Not sure if Frenkie de Jong really the obvious next step for our midfield...

I find it a bit simplistic when people say we need a pure defensive midfielder because the player in that position needs to do so much more than just defend, but having a competent holding midfielder is still what we need the most - and that's not de Jong nor is it Kante because they don't fit that mould.

There's different ways to sort out issues. Frenkie next to Kante (a peak Kante) would be a pretty perfect midfield pairing. We need a new midfield completely, defensive midfielder yes of course but if we are getting a brand new duo behind Bruno, there are different combinations to get what we need.

Alright, cheers!

Frenkie at United under EtH would transform the entire team, I am sure of it. Not surprised at all he is allegedly Ten Hags number one signing. He was the catalyst for our 2018/'19 super season. I don't think Frenkie is the problem in this move, i suspect it might be his GF. She is a strongwilled woman and I think she likes the Barcelona lifestyle a bit too much to switch for Manchester. Frenkie himself on the other hand, I expect him to be persuaded when the right person (EtH) comes knocking with the right story.

Normally I'd ignore the WAG drama but I think there's something to this one. FdJ himself said multiple times that his family life was good in Barcelona. I think his GF's opinion is part of the reason there.

I don't blame him - but I do question his ambition. Is he happy being sidelined by Barcelona, slowly becoming a bit-part player, playing out of position just waiting for Gavi and Pedri to develop and take his role from him?

Sad that we are excited for a player who doesn't really want us. Just shows how far we have fallen.

I'd rephrase it as "hesitant to join us".

Can you blame him. It's a huge gamble for really. To sign away at leat 4 years of your playing career to a club who's not seen success in 10 years, still unstable, can't develop players, no playing style and no idea who be playing beside in midfield (he could be going from playing with Busquets to Mctominay)

No matter how good coach you think Ten Hag is, I'd also want further reassurance before agreeing to a deal.

Would be a huge statement for the rest of the window if he’s the first player in as well. Maybe some of the other targets who were on the fence will see De Jong joining and follow suit.

You don't leak that a player is your no.1 target and fail to obtain him, you have to make 100% sure that he's willing to come before making that statement.

Great. But in reality this happens. Not just our club mate.

The European Champions just lost Mbappe for the whole world to see. It happens.. stop acting like our club are doing things wrong.

And it reflects negatively on Real for that exact reason. Anyway, onwards and upwards, let's see how we handle the rest of the transfer window.

It’s not ‘us’ fans that need to forget about De Jong - it’s the club, who knows exactly what they can apend, who are trying to sign him.

My bet is that it is ETH who wants to sign him, not the club. Club are putting a sharade for ETH.
Sitrep is that ETH wants De Jong. He has been calling him every day since he won the title. He said to the club he wants him. Club went to Barca, asked price. Price quoted was 80 million euros, about 68 million pounds. Which is exactly what the man is worth. Club is still haggling about the price. One report was even that they won’t blow the whole budget on one player. This is one of the things that happened to all of our managers. Nobody got the players they wanted, when they wanted. How can you even expect manager to do his job?

People will really look for a negative in every thing we do.

We're looking likely to sign a top class midfielder, an area of desperate need and this is your thought?

is it not? All I keep hearing is De Jong doesnt want to move. Barca are only selling because of money.

Di Maria didn't want to play with LVG and LVG couldn't fit him into his system.

De Jong would want to play with ETH and ETH could fit him into his system.

Those are the differences. The reason he doesn't or didn't want to move because Barcelona was his childhood club he supported. It's like Beckham didn't want to leave United for Real Madrid.

F**k her, I could arrange a date with my sister for him.

I don't watch much Football these days outside of Championship, United and the odd big game that doesn't involve United, like a big UCL or a cup final...

Can someone give me the lowdown on this fella? Who is he similar to?
