A whole page of nonsensical Di Maria debates, with some desperate to draw parallels with the past, and others trying to look savvy (but with the benefit of hindsight).

Give it a rest, none of it is interesting, especially in the Frankie De Jong thread.

You can't even write his name properly, get out of here with your lecturing tone.

Yeah exactly like is the operative word, it doesn’t mean he wanted him specifically. He wanted a player with similar attributes.

But surely if you're describing a player with the exact attributes you want, that player is the ideal solution!?

Wouldn't it be perfect if United and Barcelona announce a deal like this during a Liverpool/Real Madrid game.

Despite seeing the benefit of getting him and liking the player, this ‘saga’ holds no interest for me, I guess because it’s a player being turfed out against his wishes, rather than coming openly sours the whole thing. Perhaps he comes here and gives a sterling showing of himself, or he starts mewling after not settling, who knows?

But I’m not posting for the above, more, wanted to ask anyone who is watching him at Barcelona: how does he generally look in the rough and tumble of the league? Accepting he’s not being optimised or used to get the best out of him, does he look a level above midfielders he’s up against across the league?

He burst on the scene, but what has become of him since? Does he have any airs of being the class above he seemed to be a few years back?

I mean we're out there fighting the good fight, trying to stop Liverpool from winning the CL and this is how you thank us? By helping those cnuts sign Lewandowski and you're not even taking Pedri away?!?!

Some friends you are....
We are taking FDJ away to make them weak in long term. Everything we do here just for you.

I’m not regular watcher ever since FDJ joined Barcelona but lot of people said he’s been used incorrectly at Barcelona. They forced him to play more as no 8 or the box to box role under Xavi and also there was time in press conference when Xavi talked about his expectation of FDJ needs to score goals. Basically, Xavi expects him to be a box to box more rather than be someone who dictates the game in deeper area, which his speciality in Netherlands and Ajax played in no 6 role. Unfortunately that role was given to Busquest by Xavi at Barcelona.

He’s number one ten hag key player in 18/19, so imo this signing speaks a lot about us signing player that suits to manager’s system, signing a player that a manager knows how to use him at best, and furthermore, this signing is like signing one of the spine of the squad.

The downside is he’s not a leader. But who’s available out there a leader anyway?

Yes and he goes onto to say but i had other players on my list, that suggests to me Di Maria wasnt his first choice.
But he was on his list. Your argument that LVG never wanted him collapsed especially when you consider the ones above him weren't attainable.

Word back then was that Woody was looking for a signing to 'make a statement', and when RM offered AdM he couldn't pass it up. So it's not that far fetched to say he was a Woodward signing at all, though I do think LVG gave the ok as he also worked with the player. That's where the similarity ends with Frenkie, who ETH seems to want to build the team around, and has a clear vision of where to play him.

The club wouldn't be pushing this if he wasn't interested in joining. The media are just running with their own assumptive narrative.

If he is reluctant in any way, then stay well clear. We need player that want to fight for this club.

I don't think there's any narrative being pushed; I think De Jong would ideally like to stay at Barca. I do agree with you, though, that this deal is probably not as dead as some in here are making out. As you've said, I doubt that United would still be pushing for this deal if they thought there was no chance of De Jong accepting the move.

Barca really need De Jong to move elsewhere this summer for financial reasons. Despite noises that they're reluctant to let him go, when it comes down to it I imagine they will also be trying to convince him to take this move. The big worry for me here is that one of City, Bayern or most likely PSG try to hijack this deal; I think the chances of him staying at Barca are quite slim.

Like all those seasons with Bale and Ronaldo and then not getting the player? Dybala a couple of years ago?

We're a club who has often gone after a big/high profile target and then not got them. So yes we probably would push it hoping that he decides eventually he wants to come when its clear Barcelona want the money and not him.

We aren't in a position to take this stance. Any top-level player absolutely should be reluctant to join us right now; it's up to us to convince them that this season will just have been a blip.

If we only sign players who have absolutely no doubts in their mind about joining us then you're going to have to compromise on quality. I'd rather we adopt Ten Hag's mindset that we are confident we can deliver a project which top level talents will enjoy being a part of, rather than worrying about another Di Maria scenario.

We have a bunch of players like that now. What happens is world football makes them realise they aren’t good enough and they lose their shite.

Let’s just get players the manager requires. He wants De Jong so let’s support it no matter how complex it might get.

Barcelona will tell De Jong's agent that his client needs to be sold, and what kind of money they want for him.
Then it is the agents' job to facilitate a transfer and offer De Jong to clubs.
The first thing an agent will do is present the players with offers from all interested clubs.
De Jong will then tell the agent his preferences and they will start negotiating ballpark personal terms.
When personal terms are done they will start the negotiation on fees for the player between clubs.

There is never a fee agreed upon without the player agreeing to join.
He might have a preference to stay, but if he said no to joining the contact would end there.

People hanging on every tweet like it's real information, Barca never want it to look like a player is happy to leave or that they're desperate for the money, but if there was nothing in this at all then all parties could have shut it down by now, Barca's head sleazeball and Xavi have talked in circles leaving the financial caveat in every briefing where they put over what a great player De Jong is, all the while asking him to wear a pretty dress and be nice to the gentleman with the money. De Jong isn't a fool, obviously we're a dicey proposition right now but his old gaffer is at the helm and Barca want to sell him, in the end staying where you're clearly seen as a financial pawn is odd.

Personally I hope we get him, we've lacked a midfield playmaker since Carrick retired and he's levels above the other CM's we are being linked with, but whether it's us or City or PSG he'd be caught lacking in my view if he doesn't leave Barcelona this summer.

Word back then, great.

I like Van Gaal, but i have no idea why people trust him regarding stuff like this. It's not that long ago he came up with an absolute bonkers list of players that he apparently wanted to sign, he's full of shit.

He wanted Muller, that was his first choice. The AdM signing happened very quickly IIRC, we certainly did not spend the summer chasing him like we are doing now with Frenkie. Anyways, enough about history, it was a lazy comparison anyways.
