If he stays and waves goodbye to 26 million then I wouldn't have wanted him here anway.

It just shows he doesn't want to leave his comfort zone and surely he doesn't want to be here.
does it not show commitment to his club?

does it not show commitment to his club?
It does, but I think it also shows he is a bit of a pussy and the club juggled him into taking the decision.

It looks more towarda blind faith. I appreciate loyalty, but not "it's ok to lose 26 mil" type of loyalty, especially after they kinda shat on him in the media. That is not being loyal, that's being weak.

Do we really believe that he is ready to lose 26 million quid? If he was indeed, ready, he would probably be in the stating lineup playing as a midfielder. Barca want to get rid, whereas Frenkie is doing his best to make sure he is paid all due before he quits. Fair play to the lad.

In what world would he accept a pay cut to a contract he already has? He can just stay there and Barcelona aren't going to let him rot due to his value.

Just today we have fresh links to SMS as a Frenkie alternative. Crap source but it’s still noise about our midfield. The club are working, we should let them work and trust that they are better informed than we are.

We have been linked with him for the last 2/3 years, would be a great second midfield signing after FDJ…its still on!!!

Wouldn't be a United transfer window without that link.

He will start even if he won't take a pay cut. Once the window closes, no clubs going to stick their highest earner on the bench out of spite. It's moronic. Once the season starts, then it's just the footballing business that matters.
I think in those lines as well, but they will try and pester him for as long as the window is open and we are interested I'd say.

Who will he start over? Gavi? In midfield?

Just don’t see it

This will be a Messi situation "Please accept this pay cut no one should ever agree too"

"Ok"

"Excellent! But it seems we have done our numbers wrong and it actually needs.to be this even bigger amount instead"

Rinse and repeat until player gets the hint.

Don't follow Barca but reading from those who do and have good contacts there, he was far from a guaranteed starter last season and a lot of his performances were poor. And was subbed a fair few times.

They now have Kessie too. As well as Pedri and Gavi being a year older and more established. So his chances will be lesser.

I can't see him staying at Barca another year from now. He'll go somewhere even if it isn't United.
Frenkie had the 4th most minutes played in that team last season after Ter Stegen, Busquets and Alba.

I presume you have hard evidence that this is the case?

No, just going off the evidence of Ten Hag saying if we can't get De Jong we have to fill the role from within. While the only midfielders we have been linked with lately are totally different profiles e.g., Tielemans and Milinkovic-Savic.

Yes Gavi, which he has been. Gavi is a great talent but so is Frenkie and currently the better player. If Frenkie is theirs for the long term and among their best earners, I really don't see how he will be a squad player.

Mind, it makes most sense for all parties for him to leave.

I've seen the SMS links too and I'm wondering if they're going to give Barca a bit of a kick up the arse. Not surprising that as soon as some stories appear about us looking elsewhere, regardless of the source, Barca suddenly want this sorted quickly.

He didn’t say that though, his words have been twisted. He said we want ‘the right players’ he also said we have a list but if they are not available then we will create that player from with in. I think he was quite careful not to refer to de Jong directly, even though it was a question about de Jong.

Not close yet. @Raoul had near 7,000 posts in the Trump thread (Dunno if there's older threads with more).

Berba is close to beating any of the mentalists in the Messi vs Ronaldo thread, though, and that's a hell of an achievement in itself.
Thanks

Despite all of Barcelona's public posturing, it is de Jong who holds all the power right now. He is sitting on a contract that will earn him close to a hundred million euros over the next four years, and Barcelona are not going to freeze out a 80 million euro asset and reduce his transfer fee further once the transfer window has closed. De Jong, like most professional athletes, would back himself to beat out the competition and establish himself as a first choice midfielder at the club of his dreams. If Barcelona really need him to go for sporting/economic reasons, they have to make it worth his while. No way would he, and neither should he, forego any amount of money that he thinks he is owed to leave Barcelona.

Nah. They won’t leave Gavi on the bench long term.

Barcelona didn't really need to renew Dembele's contract even if he had nowhere else to go. Also, if De Jong changes the terms of his deal with Barca to stay he'll just be doing what Umtiti and Pique and others have already done. Its not unprecedented within the dressing room.

Depends on what's important to you and how else you make it up doesn't it? Its not like his wage from Barcelona is his sole source of income.

Its known that De Jong has loved Barcelona his whole life, his family used to holiday there, his girlfriend loves the city as does he. If you want to be in a place, and you live pretty comfortably, then what's the difference?

Everything De Jong is 'losing' he's losing on paper. He hasn't been paid the original value of his deal at any point. So, in reality, while he wouldn't be getting what he originally thought. The wage he's been living on won't change drastically.

I think people want to believe this will happen and so are finding reasons why it might. I would like to believe it will happen. De Jong would instantly take our midfield up a few levels. It would actually be shocking to see how much he would improve us. We've gotten so used to the standard of midfield play we've had for the past few years, we've forgotten what is like to have someone who can really pull the strings from dep.

I just see the other side of the coin. De Jong loves Barcelona, he's literally living his dream, his actual take home pay won't change all that much if he agrees to what is, in reality, a nominal pay cut. Lots of other Barca players have done it, so he won't be the only one. If Barcelona are serious about giving him that option I can see him taking it.
Pique is owed like €80m in deferred wages again another poor example. Umtiti hasn't been good since 2018 so obviously he's the type to take what he can get because he knows he has no value
Not saying he won't take a pay cut but it's nowhere near as feasible as you're making it out to be

Of course he does and that must be frustrating Barca no end. He could happily stay on his current contract and there's not a thing Barca could do about it.

Why should he take a paycut. He can just stay on full wage and nothing barca can do.
Guess we will see start August if barca will be able to register new players.

I'm not suggesting that he should but I can't help but feel that he might.

He may have to make a simple choice, money or playing for the club he loves. Yes he could refuse to move and collect 100% of what is owed to him but I think its quite likely that he has been told that he needs to take a paycut to stay or he will be sold and he doesn't seem completely against the idea of moving.

So its more money vs staying somewhere he would prefer to be. Kicker is that his paycut would be huge.

He ruined my summer completely so he could have the money and I hope now he can spend it on lessons in grace and decorum.
Manners and respect cost nothing. It’s what separates us from wild animals. If Frenkie doesn’t have them at this point, he’s a lost cause.

I disagree. I think by the end of last season, had Gavi and Pedri stayed fit, FDJ would've been on the bench. This isn't a controversial take and most Barca fans would agree.

Gavi and Pedri are better in those roles, specifically. As a deeper midfielder FDJ is obviously king.

He’s a Barca **** and would play for them
For free whilst they spank his missus and slap his mum.

That might be true but i'm not 100% sure about that. Would be interesting to see it happen.

I think it’s one of those things that is legally correct but has never been tested. Which I’d imagine means it would be fraught with risk for club and player and so probably unlikely

Gavi can play from the left and Kessie is also not a certainty, will require someone to play alongside him in a double pivot. The issue is Xavi wants Bernardo Silva and that's why Frenkie in midfield is unwanted. If he doesn't get Silva then maybe Frenkie can still have a go

Or if he believes he can deliver as a CB(Libero of sorts) and Xavi has given him assurances then who knows
