French Elections 2017

French economic policy in a nutshell:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/french...llon-apologizes-for-employing-wife-1486396671

*I paid my wife a shitload of money, but don’t worry, taxes are so high that the state got most of it back* (ignoring that she earned above the average income….). You couldn’t make this shit up.

I said earlier that I don’t believe that Le Pen is going to win it and that Trump’s victory might actually hurt her chances. I have to retract that. The current campaigns of her competitors are such a colossal shit-show, that I wouldn’t bet against Le Pen anymore.

Additionally, here a quite funny older report about French administrative practices:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-32510604

So where does she actually work? In a freaking radio radio archive! Yeah….thats certainly a job, where you need a driver 24/7 on hold….
Crikey, how much travelling does she actually do? I can barely be arsed to claim back about three taxis a month cos I hate admin and have lost hundreds of quid over the years as a result.

Latest polling I can see has Fillon-Le Pen dropping down to 56% for Fillon...quite a big drop. Macron still holding relatively strong against her, and looks the more likely to get to the next round. But if Fillon slips through...could be troubling.

Yeah, but Macron's wife is 24 years older than him, so he should lose for that reason alone.

Being more serious, I really hope that Le Pen doesn't win. I don't care who wins as long as it isn't her.

She was his teacher at school when he was 15... Then they officially became a couple when he was 18

Can't help but think if he was 24 years older than her in similar circumstances there would be some pretty nasty stuff being said about him

I agree, but who cares? Age difference is overrated. :)

1st round: Le Pen will easily win - deal done

2nd round: pretty open, Le Pen against Macron or Fillon.

Given the political climate (terrorist attacks, economic climate, refugees, French TV...), Le Pen will win 55-45 or lose 45-55.

The election of Trump, the Brexit, the scandals related to Fillon and the rate of abstention make everything possible.

Just saw a poll that Le Pen is now in the lead. Is that accurate ?

She's ahead in the first round but that's been the case for a while. Still struggling when it comes to the second round...closing in on Fillon, but can't get Macron below 60%.

Still think Macron is arch favourite.

Wow, Fillon is still hanging in there. My word they really are a trio of degenerates.

car crash in slow-mo
Who's your money on? Must admit, I only really got interested the other week when I decided to write a piece on French government bonds. The markets are getting more nervous.
The French system makes ours look straightforward.

I saw the reaction of the market as well, but I doubt that anyone can forecast these things accurately.
I don't see how Fillion can win the election. He is imo a dead man walking, which is great for Le Pen. Macron had his honeymoon period and now people start to figure out that he is not that special. He is not a great candidate. Le Pen winning would make a lot of sense. That said, Le Pen herself has a lot of baggage and the French people like the EU. I remember over a year ago (long) before Trump, that I wrote, that I am a bit scared of the FN winning this election. It feels quite surreal that this might come true. My feeling says Macron (The french people can't be daft enough to vote for Le Pen, right? :wenger:), but my mind points in the other direction.....So I have no idea, how this is going to end. It is worrying enough that the FN is within a shout.

Realistically with a decent candidate I reckon Fillon's party should've had it in the bag. His own corruption has been bad though, and he should be disgusted with himself for handing Le Pen such a good chance. Still, he's good mates with Vlad anyway, so maybe he won't be that unhappy...

the French parties seem to be so entrenched that new faces don't have any chance. All the candidates (Macron, Fillion, Hamon, Mélenchon) have a long history in office. Heck even the "outsider" candidate - le Pen - is part of a dynasty of politicians.
Someone new should have swept the field, but I guess that is difficult when even the competition (Valls, Juppe, Sarkozy) has a long history in politics. Some anti-migrant semi-hardline conservative could have also swept the election, but the conservatives had to nominate the one candidate who is up to his ears in in a swamp of self-enrichment.

Macron is the outsider, he doesn't have a long history in office, he barely have an a history in office.

he has a major in political science, visited the ENA and worked as Inspector of Finances, as advisor and as vice general secretary for Holland, before becoming the Minister for Economic Affairs. He tries to play the card as "new face", but he really isn't. It would be difficult to be anymore of a "politician" (not that I personally consider that to be a bad thing) than him.

Actually it wouldn't be hard, by french standards thousands of people are more politicians than he is. The ENA is an admnistrative school, he worked as a public servant and shortly worked for Hollande between 2012 and 2016, he has never been a member of Solférino which is one of the reason why he was continuously lambasted by the PS. He is a new face.

Macron worked for the state like millions of people, he wasn't in politics.

Isn't one of Holland's biggest reform agendas literately named after him ("loi Macron")?

On a different note. I struggle to follow the french media, because my french sucks. Why is the PS attacking him and not Fillion?

Narcissism is strong in France and when someone build a reform it ends up with his name. The PS doesn't like Macron because economically he is too far on the right for them, he is too comfortable with the MEDEF(Bosses' syndicate), he isn't registered in the party and has openly said that he won't.

Le Pen and her anti-EU agenda is electable....

It's just that she's surrounded by a whole bunch of 'over-enthusiaistic' FN politicos who aren't....

Fascinating thread.
Basing on the bookies odds (not always accurate I know), Le Pen is right behind Macron...

That's only for the first round though. She was polling last for the second round in the last poll I saw.

Yep, the yield spread between French government bonds and bunds pushed out to a three year high, which was the hook of my piece.
The candidates all seem mired in varying degrees of scandal and it's remarkable how long French politicians soldier on for.
I was reading about the fears that the traditional Republican Front could break down in the second round cos of in-fighting on the left. That could be Le Pen's best chance some feel.

That's your positition, fair enough. Others take a different position and find her unelectable, exactly for her anti-EU position, the protectionism and her islamophobia.

Her absence of consistency, her lack of moral compass, her lack of interest for economy and she is a compulsive liar.

That's only for the first round though. She was polling last for the second round in the last poll I saw.

She's behind both Fillon and Macron, but she's slowly advancing on the former and it's about 50/50 right now who makes it through. If Fillion advances Le Pen's got a reasonable chance.

AND JP....

Aahh....

Didn't say I'd vote for her, but 10s of millions will exactly because of what you point out.....

Lot of swing voters by the sound of it. FT saying half of voters haven't made a decision on who they will vote for in the second round now. Odd mix, with Macron stepping up his anti-colonial past rhetoric yesterday and set to probably face a far right candidate. A Le Pen victory would certainly make the Brexit negotiations that bit more interesting if France could face a referendum.

What would she actually do if she wins, besides try to lead France out of the EU and restrict immigration? Why is the thought of her winning so scary?
