French Elections 2017

But I don't understand the Guardian's journalist, I suppose that his role is to inform british readers and give them an idea about what both candidates propose. And in the case of Macron it's very easy, a simple reference to his program would make things easy for example in terms of EU reforms, he wants a EU security council, a EU border police, a EU military fund, a EU military HQ(already planned), a EU Exchequer, a "Buy European Act" which is supposed to limit public procurement to companies with 50% of their production chain in the EU, etc...

But you've just explained why 30%+ of the French electorate are still going to vote for Le Pen....Sad but true....

He could be an EU / Juncker 'plant'....

It's fine for me, I'm not defending his propositions but merely pointing out that they are not vague and not shared by the PS or the main LR movement. Macron sounds like a mix between NKM and Juppé respectively from a social and Economical standpoint.

Too true. The moment Lepen got to the 2nd round, whoever was to face her was to be the next president.
I personally don't vote, never have and probably never will, for me politicians are more or less the same, nothing will fundamentaly change no matter who is in charge. The whole thing seems like a big joke.
I understand the sentiment but the way things are going this is a dangerous road to go down. It can always get worse

OK....I understand....

Just thought it important to point out that 30%+ of the French electorate are NOT racist....

No but they are voting for a racist/fascist though, at which point they should really be questioning their priorities. There's not much point in not being racist if you vote for racist people to run your country anyway.

They are a mix of illiterate, xenophobe, finger pointing twats and some of them are racist too. Because we both know that they didn't read Macron's program and we know that Le Pen didn't too, since her motto is "Macron is baby Hollande" and he has no program. If she knew or if she thought her electorate had a brain, she would be telling everyone that Macron could be the most federalist politician in Europe that would be a good argument but she didn't use it because the woman and her party are dumb.

An other point, some people are weird. They blame Brussels for not tightly controlling EU's outside borders but whine when someone propose to actually do something about it.

Correct....

But there are, equally, a lot of anti-EU voters here, and like UKIP in the UK, only one party / candidate is offering a choice to quit.

If any of the other candidates or traditional parties had offered an EU in-or-out referendum ( which almost certainly would have been a 'stay' result, so a bet to nothing ) then Le Pen and the FN would be history as far as this election is concerned....

A bit harsh, but you're on the right track....

But Macron convince the EU to change / reform ? Anything at all ? Nobody can do that - epecially an overt federalist such as Macron.....

Off to the beach - see you later....

There were several anti-EU candidates in the election first round, only one overtly racist, but by last wednesday's debate it wasn't even clear that Le Pen wants out of the EU or even the Euro or reform one or both or have two different currencies as she stumbled over the question trying to appeal to Mélenchon supporters

I haven't paid attention to the French election at all... :nervous: Is there a good brief summary on Macron and Le Pen anywhere? If Le Pen is just some far right fascist/racist, why does she have support from 40% of France?

I didn't follow it much either, but the 40% could include:
1. Those who are indeed fascists/racists.
2. Those who are not, but think that "she will be OK", "the job will change her to the better", etc.
3. Those who say "let's try this... what can possibly go wrong?"
4. Those who don't like her opponent.

I heard similar arguments here in the United States in the 2016 elections!

We don't know the proportion of votes for Le Pen yet, she had 21% in the first round and you have to take into account abstention and spoiled votes if you are talking about France as a whole. Outside of that, you have fascists probably around 10%, you have unemployed people who have been guaranteed a job, people who have been guaranteed more benefits and people who wants to create a revolution and think that Le Pen is a great catalyst (the far left).

Once the elections in France and Germany are over and when Brexit comes to its conclusion, European politicians – lead by the French-German axis – are going to reform the Eurozone. Late2018 and early2019. They’ll finally push for the “completion of the monetary union”. Maybe it will take many small steps, so the electorate is not getting spooked.

As I can't watch the United match until later and I don't want to know the result until I've watched it, I'll be avoiding the Caf until I have, see you around 10 or 11 tonight and I won't go to bed until I'm certain Le Pen won't be president

Not very good turnout so far, down 5% on 2012 at the same time.

I was never too interested in politics before but when the lunatics and extremists started coming out of the woodwork over the past couple of years , alarm bells started ringing.

I understand the sentiment but the way things are going this is a dangerous road to go down. It can always get worse

Maybe it's because living abroad for so long has in a way made a bit disconnected to it all. Maybe I'm just a very lazy person :wenger:
All in all, I hope Macron brings a much need breath of fresh air to a political scene full of dinosaurs

Treat with caution as it's early etc

This is very good news. Multiple exit polls have Macron getting into the 60-65% mark.

Macron president with probably +65%.

Spare yourself watching the match...

Early semi-exit has Macron at 65.1%.

Twill do.

Wonder when he'll first meet Trump.
