French Elections 2017

For context, Macron isn't a socialist and they spent the better part of the last 5 years repeating it and trying their best to make his position difficult in the government, they were called "les frondeurs" and were led by Hamon.
how many seats can En Marche win in the next parliamentary elections?

Hamon was never going to win, or any PS candidate given Hollande's popularity, and without Macron we'd be looking at a Le Pen vs Fillon/Melenchon runoff. Still interesting to see how Macron deals with them with a view to the legislative elections.

Yeah, very true, and I imagine that to some extent the PS will kind of know Macron was a necessity...but still I also imagine there'll be a bit of internal frustration considering how far they've fallen.

Very sad that european politics have been reduced to detecting the fascist candidate and then going into full panic mode trying to elect anyone else instead, even if that someone is not really what people want.

The idea that elections should be about hope of positive change has been replaced by fear that something really bad might come.

I don't see how this is sustainable long-term. The reasons that lead people to the hands of these disguised (sometimes not that disguised) fascists are not being addressed anywhere. Eventually they will start winning if nothing is done.

Yeah. We've got to stop people stealing our wallpaper.

I don't agree. I'm happy to see that despite fundamental differences of the direction and/or how to get there, there is still a quite broad consensus to say no to fascism and racism.

So it looks like Le Pen may have decided that the FN is too toxic and is trying to go it alone like Macron

She must assume French people to be really stupid.

Politicians everywhere are the same.
They assume everyone else is stupid.

Oh come on! She represents all the french, she is France's president not FN's.

This adds uncertainty and I don't like that. I'm like the markets.

Jesus, Jean-Marie is going to love this

They're right to some extent. Just when you thought the interest in this election was all but done...

:lol::lol::lol:

That is amazing.

I am confident French voters to be aware that her positions and objectives make Le Pen toxic, not the party she had led.
Probably... but who knows she might go uber populist and saying she's going to build walls, start extreme vetting and give everybody four extra bank holidays... as I say if she does nothing she looses so has to try something even if it will most probably fail

Of course it's good to see a consensus against fascism, but if that's the only thing that unites people, and not an actual project for the future, than it's a bit sad, that's all. With time I predict that won't be enough. I truly hope I'm wrong.

Yeah. We've got to stop people stealing our wallpaper.

Don't know how that connects to what I said, but it's a good reason to watch that episode again. Oliver is on fire lately.

Everyone was watching Russia basically so they stayed out if it. Fair suggestion?

Russia would be blamed regardless of what they have actually done if Le Pen would win and any connection with Russia is ignored when Macron is going to win. The whole Russia angle in all these elections is completely overblown. Yes it exists and we should talk about it, but it is not as big as people think. Did anyone care that Geert Wilders was almost 100% financed by an american guy? Did anyone suggest that the Dutch election result is not legitimate because of it? I think you know the answer.

Soros sponsored Russian intervention. Or something.

A bit like sticking a few feathers to an elephant in the hope that people will mistake it for a duck.

Did you said the same thing about US elections?
Because of the US election system and the unlimited amount of stupidity and hypocrisy I've encountered in interactions with some Americans from rural areas, I was indeed sceptical that Hillary would make it, as you can see in the election thread.

My experience with French people is a different one, therefore - although the race is far from over - I'm more optimistic that people won't fall for Le Pen's theatrics and Macron will get the required majority to be the next president.
