Thought he had an alright game today, a few times my heart was in my mouth though. Would be better if he wasn’t built like the side of a fiver but puts himself about well.

It just seems the CAF only watch what people do on the ball and not what happens off the ball or how good he was today with his positioning and movement.
It’s hard to focus on positives off the ball when you’re so disastrous on it. It kind of negates any other positives.

Shaking my head wondering what game people were watching. He was really good today. It just seems the CAF only watch what people do on the ball and not what happens off the ball or how good he was today with his positioning and movement. Had moments of good interchanges with people and working the ball around. I’m sure there are better ball players more willing to try and go through the middle for sure but can they provide the cover he did.

People say it’s easy to find someone who can run about but it really isn’t. Not at that intensity. he for sure looked better given a bit more freedom and less to cover playing in the 3.
This is a place of extremes... he did an adequate job, and of all the tried options we had available was the best choice and doubt anyone in the squad could have done better. Would I like to eventually upgrade him, yes, was he awful today no. Decent job and contributed immensely to the win.

He was a boy among men getting shrugged off the ball far too lightweight and gave it away poorly with some simple passes. He was tackled 4 times and had a loose touch that was then taken from him 4 times, easily the most on the pitch losing the ball like that. McTominay did a better job winning the ball too. He had a good shot, if you think thats even a decent performance get a hold of yourself

pretty much backed up what I Just mentioned, people don’t watch what happens off the ball.

I usually agree and have defended Fred many times in this thread. He is usually blamed for everything when a lot of the issues are more team based. I do think he lost too many 50/50's today. He was shrugged off the ball too easily. That does happen a bit too often, and it's because he's a small guy.

I do prefer Fred with more freedom. He even said he prefers to play further up the pitch. Ole had McT sitting and Fred playing a bit further forward. It allows Fred to play his natural game and get about a bit more. He gave the ball away as much as the rest of the team did, so I don't see that as a negative against him today. I'd say he was around a 6 today. I don't think anybody played badly. Average up to very good.

To be fair mate if almost everyone in here including a few guys who rate him and usually make a good case for him while defending him say he was very poor. Then it's probably safe to say he was poor.

I've seen him play worse though to be fair to him, I don't think he was completely awful today.

Yeah that was a really poor performance today. No defending that. His lack of physicality is always an issue when midfield is congested.

Its not because he is small. Players like Kante and Ramires were small in midfield and dont get shrugged off the ball. He's small and he's lightweight, he's bad at using the body he does have to shield the ball and resist pressing or physical contact.

Given he also plays right in the area that a lot of teams are going to have some of their more physical players and also in a defensive minded role he should be helping the defenders from set pieces, its an even bigger deal that hes short and lightweight adding more problems to the team

Didn't we use all our subs? Cavani had to come off because of cramp.
I think Cavani, Ronaldo and Bruno coming off were all good choices. But did we really need Lingard?

I can understand we want Jese as an impact sub when we're chasing a goal, but if we're cruising and van de Beek still isn't picked, even just to rest Fred, then I can't imagine a scenario when Donny is used.

Thought he was alright but always get bullied off on the ball easily. Always feel like if we had top midfielders in his situation, we could create some chances from this. Fred is not a quality midfielder for United first team.

That’s about right. McFred are usually the least worst option. If we’re going to play 352 (or 3412) more then possibly Pogba can come in. We just don’t have good options in CM.

I missed the game yesterday so watched it back this morning and one player that stood out to me was Fred,

He’s such a poor footballer for 80% of the time and I cannot believe he plays for Manchester United, I promise you if you replaced him with a better player our performance as a team would have been so much better yesterday, you could probably say the same about a few players for us but his especially , his position is so important and I kept thinking imagine Veratti was in that position yesterday, imagine Ndidi or even Rice, football is about small margins and sometimes it only takes 1 player to make a massive difference , Fred in this case needs sold next summer

Fred does lot of things well but then comes up with couple of stupid moments which undermines performance rating.

Also his off the ball work rate and movement is unmatched in ManUtd squad. Always available for pass and involved in most of the good stuff. Then a moment of silly pass, loose touch or taking too many touches to control possession which lets opponents to regroup and press.

Said the same yesterday for Sancho, 2 nil up and you bring on Lingard. It serves absolutely no purpose, the lad should have been shipped out long ago.

McT was better of the two which was in contrast to the previous games this season but if yiu treat them as a combo then they did the job.

McFred actually got run through. It was our back line of 5 that closed the lanes.

But there’s no doubt McTominay was the better of the two. Boggles the mind Fred keeps getting starts, no matter how he performs.

he’s been miles better than McT in every other game they’ve played together this season? Pogba can’t do the job (but I’d obviously be happy to see what he’s like with 5 at the back)

Agreed, No-8 role os so important in the team we need a better player than Fred. Mc|Fred is really limiting our play

I thought he was unusually poor yesterday. Having said that, he lost the ball twice in quick succession due to absolute hospital passes from his team mates, which I feel is probably a contributing factor to why he looked so poor at times. His passing was as erratic as I've seen it though, some really poor passes from him yesterday.

Off the ball is something easy to miss and I think as you say is unmatched in the club. It was a particularly poor performance but equally it's so easy to be drawn into looking for the mistakes with Fred and it's almost like no one else on the pitch plays silly passes etc. Its funny cause people say Scott disappears in games and Bruno leaves whoever in midfield with little support playing too far upfront. It's a tough gig whoever is left having to fill in the blanks.

Yeah, I think that is true. I remember the Everton match. He was playing very well in the first half. He played quite a few really nice line breaking passes. He was also moving the ball quickly. Then he makes an error in the 2nd half and we end up conceding from it. I think his overall performance was good, but an error that leads to conceding a goal is going to negatively effect the perception of a player's performance.

I think he offers more than energy, but his energy is definitely important, and something that we don't get from our other midfielders. With McT in midfield, Fred is doing most of the pressing, tackling, intercepting, receiving the ball from defence, and line breaking passes out of both of them. I fully believe that he doesn't get the credit that he deserves. We can and should do better than Fred. I'm sure we can find a more press resistant player, and someone that won't make as many silly passes and touches. He's still better than most of the fan base says he is.

I'm sure all fans do it, but I know for certain that our fans look for mistakes from players that they don't like. Fred is top of the list for sure. There are many games where people say his passing was shit, and his pass percentage is very similar to the rest of the team. If his was passing was so bad, so was everybody else's. Bruno playing like a second striker has been an issue for us. Not just that, but our other forwards not doing enough defensively as well. McFred has too much ground to cover.

Based on our normal performances, the best midfielders in the world wouldn't look good in our midfield. Too much is expected of them. We could get a bit more quality out of better players, but we would still concede goals and chances at an alarming rate.

Solid squad man but Fred should never be a regular starter for a club which aspires to lift major trophies.

Playing next to someone like McTominay wouldnt help any player man, I am not a big fan of Fred but put any midfielder next to McTominay they look bad !

I was on Scott side for a long time as he is our boy but he shouldnt be any where near to first team. end of the story and we need an upgrade on Fred too

He is a liability, probably our worst player in the squad.
At least he gets involved, McTominay should be absolutely ashamed of himself, only midfielder I've ever seen on a 0 hour contract. Hiding at Old Trafford, absolutely pathetic.

Maybe it's me but in the context of the game, thought he was one of our best players. Comments about his passing today is bullshit and basically carried Scott and Bruno who were invisible

Lets not get carried away now, that award is solely on Maguire at the moment.
Maguire is pretty close at the moment, but if i count every game they’ve played for us then there’s no one close to Fred. He can’t even do the simplest of things right and for a supposed all-action midfielder I’ve seen him always get outmuscled by players of varying sizes.

Fred usually turns up against City but suddenly he was a disaster. I think he just needs a change of managers.

Roy Keave just said it perfectly. Anyone telling themselves he’s good enough is kidding themselves.

Keane said he'd grab Ole by the throat and ask him why he's playing Fred .... Brilliant :wenger:

This guy is a fecking clown and Ole is a fecking clown for picking him 40 games a season. Generally one if the worst midfielders in the league.
