Gaming Fortnite .

I've known him since he was like 13. There was a girl that would be on our comms in the game we were playing, and we could legitimately not tell the difference between the two :) He's incredibly skilled from a mechanical point of view. He was at one point considered the best Widow in OW in the world I think.

Ninja got to where he is, by being the best early adopter of Fortnite. A halo pro? When was there a pro halo scene on PC, I'm being honest, I wasn't aware it existed. Maybe 6-8 months ago, when Reaver didn't know how to build Ninja was a better player. All you have to do is watch both guys for about 20s to see the difference in their skillsets. Reaver has elite of the elite aim and tracking. Ninja has adequate aim for an elite player, but his success is predicated on building and overall game intelligence which he absolutely excels at.

I mean, the first time I watched Ninja, I watched him whiff about 6 shottie blasts in a row and still eventually kill the guy. You watch reaver for any length of time, and you will see shit like this.

This is pure drivel. I've watched Ninja since Halo 3/Reach days (Xbox 360 and not PC) and he's always been a phenomenal gamer. I've seen him branch out from Halo to Destiny to H1Z1 (where he broke the record for most kills in a solos game) to PUBG and now to Fortnite. We're talking about a guy who went from console to PC and barely required a day to adjust and continue as one of the best. BTW, Fortnite wasn't a popular game on release, PUBG had all the bragging rights till about Christmas. It just so happened that there was an individual called Ninja who was going around doing this:

He rose from 120,000 subs in October to 13 million as of today - he was a nobody for a large part of his career. I'm no fan boy, but he made Fortnite what it is today.

Having watched Ninja for around 8-9 years, I haven't seen a more reckless and carefree player yet still capable of racking up insane numbers in every game he plays. I mean, just watch this montage from Halo Reach:

Or watch him embarrass a fellow pro:

There are so many different parts about Fortnite that I think player comparisons are useless unless there's an obvious difference in quality. Is it based on who can get the most kills, who can survive the longest, who does best in 1 vs. 1, or who does better in solos, duos, or squads?

Of course, but as with any Sport, we eventually determine the "GOAT" regardless of the different circumstances - Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Schumacher, Messi, Sir Donald Bradman, Roger Federer etc.

Other sports have clear guidelines. They are based on how main points you have while it's 1 (team) vs. 1 (team) per game so it's far easier to determine. With Fortnite it's still not decided what's better between most kills or surviving longest and you're up against 99 different teams.

Ninja wasn't a Halo pro? Since when?

I get that he can be a bit cringey at times, but I really don't understand why people put him down a lot just because he has blown up. He helps other streamers, donates a shitload of time and money to charities and he just generally comes across well these days.

I hate the whole building stuff thing, I don’t think Fortnite is for me

I’m too uncultured and like instant action

Here's a look at his Esports career. Halo is where he started.

He's not cringey, in my opinion. Everyone has their "thing" on stream - something unique that sets them apart and contributes to the entertainment factor. Ninja is a little goofy and always has been - check the video I linked, he's commentating in an Australian accent over his own 1v1 against Suddoth 2.

I've said it a few times to friends as well. I don't understand how this game would appeal to newer players. The building part can be sooooooo tedious and takes so long to learn.

I would play it if the building wasn't in it, not for me as it is.
I had the same reaction initially. Gave it another try about a month later and got hooked second time around.

I wouldn't be surprised if they introduce something to help newer players along. It's tough getting into the game now when everyone else is so much better and with no form of tutorial. I imagine plenty of others are turned off initially after getting destroyed. I know I was and it sounds like several others in this thread have been.

On a separate note I tried plugging my earphones in last night. Even they make a huge difference to being able to position footsteps. Then I got carried away and ordered a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990!

I think it’s more to do with the double standards from twitch. He was singing a rap song and said the n word. The song didn’t have the n word to begin with.

Smaller streamers have been banned for less.

And others haven't for more to be fair. Well not until they are made to look anyway. That's on Twitch though, and as we saw with the whole Tfue thing, they need to sort themselves out.

In any case, that was a recent thing, the anti-ninja stuff has been going on for ages.

Well for a start, I like the no tutorial just play thing, you want to get good? Practice. Plus they already get a lot of stick for catering to the casuals more and more.

However I don't see why they haven't just had a free-play offline mode to practice in to solve all the problems. We can't all be streamers and play 8hrs a day, I don't see why they can't just let you drop in the map empty and play around.

That's the sort of thing I had in mind. Ideally with infinite resources to play around with.

I've practiced building by dropping into 50v50s or 5 teams of 20 and hiding at the back. So much time wasted chopping wood though...

Play solos and drop Wailing/Moisty. Or better yet do some duos and practice build battles with someone :)

To be honest it's changed a lot lately, I used to be pretty handy at building but now they buffed the Turbo building I feel like a complete noob again. So next time I get the chance to play, I'm dropping the edge of Wailing and doing just just.

So you call what I said drivel, and reiterate what I said. He was the best early adopter.

He isn't the best. I'm sorry. He was the right guy, at the right time, in the right game. When nobody good was playing Fortnite, sure, he was the best. Now? He's a top player, but he isn't the best. I'm not hating on him, I'm happy for him. It's awesome what he has done, and what he is doing, but let's not pretend that he has some elite FPS pedigree. He doesn't.

Console FPS doesn't count. What PC games has he been a top rated competitive pro? I honestly don't know. The guys I've talked to, actual current and former OW pros, quake pros, painkiller pros, counter strike pros, have said that he is nowhere near elite in terms of mechanical FPS skill. Which is fine. Popular FPS games have gone beyond raw mechanical skill. OW with its dumbed down mechanics, and now Fortnite with the building game have inserted other aspects to the game. Again, that's fine.

What separates Ninja is his game awareness and decision making. It might very well be the best in the scene right now, but his mechanical FPS skills are, to put it mildly, not elite. I don't watch him regularly, but what I have seen, is not spectacular. He wins despite this fact. Reaver is pretty much the opposite. His mechanical FPS skills are absolutely elite, his decision making isn't elite. He wins despite this.

Now, I'm not saying that his mechanical skills are bad, I am saying, that by the standards of his peers, they are not at the top of the pile, not even close.

The reality is, nobody cares about competitive console gaming. That's almost like being the first winner at the special olympics. The skill ceiling is so incredibly low regarding actual FPS mechanics, that it's hard to tell who can transition to M/KB and who can't.

Twitch, and any online game without an actual rated system/tournament system, is and has been a popularity contest. The most popular skilled players, get conflated as being the best. They almost never are.

Fair enough.

On the console competitive scene, its certainly closing the gap. CSGO is the only major FPS on PC where as console has had, to a lesser extent, Halo and COD. People definitely care, there might not be as many tournaments but the prize money per tournament is relatively high for the latter two.

Those calling Ninja's act cringey have to remember that his audience is, I would think, largely made up of 10-16 year olds. There's obviously some older and probably even younger, but a lot of kids watch his streams. That's why he stopped swearing and stuff. His humour resonates better with them than males in their 20s or 30s.

Too hard to get into the GOAT argument with Fortnite at the moment I think. There's heaps of good players. Hamlinz, Ninja and Daequan would be my top three - not in order. I definitely haven't seen all the best players though.

I had a look at stats recently and just to compare the three you named:

Ninja has a KD of 11.27 and a win percentage of 35.5%
Hamlinz has a KD of 10.65 and a win percentage of 40.70%
Daequan has a KD of 6.71 and a win percentage of 23.40%

I'm yet to see many players with stats better than the first two.

And for @Nucks Reaver has a KD of 8.15 and a win percentage of 30.10%

We can argue that stats don't show the full picture but they give a great insight into any conclusion you might want to make regarding a sportsperson.

I don't play, couldn't get into it, but I do enjoy watching some of the top players and HD is my go-to streamer. Not because he's an entertainer cos he's shit at that but his play is great to watch when he gets in the zone. His stats will be skewed vs others because he never plays solo, mostly solo squads.

Sounds like a lot of people you spoke to are youtube/twitch commentors to be honest!

Wasn't Ninja one of the top Pubg players too? I don't really know that scene 100% but I did see Shroud talking about it the other day.

Also being so dismissive of console gaming is elitist bullshit, if anything the transition is even more impressive. I wonder how many of these true pros you talk about have done the transition the other way?

HD is a monster, can be a right miserable fecker though.

I wonder if his 'mechanical' skills are on point too?

There are a lot of good streamers for different reasons, like you say HD. Dakotaz is a good watch, Nick eh 30 is very entertaining, CDN might not be good but he's really entertaining, Tfue if you want to see mechanical skills.

Yeh he's new to the old youtube/streaming for money thing, he's crap at that side of it, been a pro-gamer for over a decade though.

There was an update last night but I didn't get the chance to play yet. Anything new? Have they fixed the goddamn shotguns?

I had a quick game last night to test out the new 5 teams of 20 mode. Not a fan. Maybe it was just the games I played but it seems to encourage 10-15mins of nothing happening, followed by 5mins of mayhem. That's too long to wait for the mayhem.

They added the stink bomb. Another novelty item which will probably be vaulted à la the smoke nade.

Me and my boy are playing some games in a bit, though I haven't played in over a week (excuses in early!).

Feel free to message me in game or jump in if you fancy it mate.

Will let you know, dude. Just playing with some friend/s at the moment.

Are there building bugs back? I literally fell through my own ramps twice earlier, no knocked player under. Built ramps, ran up them, then fall under.

This game is so aggravating because the basic issues just aren't being sorted. It's like they only listen to the Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime on reddit now.

Not sure. But I wouldnt be surprised if there is one. Jokes aside, they literally add a bug with each update.

As for the reddit thing, I got into a debate with someone who wanted to be able to shoot hoops in Fortnite. Reddit is full of some very questionable individuals and the sub for Fortnite is full of so many stupid suggestions.

Yeah and I've had a couple of streamers tell me that it was pretty clear at E3 that Reddit is high on the list of people they listen to.

It's a joke, those guys get worse and worse.

Without wanting to sound like a hipster but this game has gone downhill ever since it got hyped. I could be wrong but weekly updates werent a thing till recently and they literally screw shit up with every one.

Yeah, they are literally trying anything and everything now just to meet the deadline they imposed and no one asked for. But hey it's all good, they've got a 19 year old Myth on their side to bang on about stuff he doesn't understand on their behalf!

It's kind of nice Ninja/Ceez/Summit and others have started on Realm Royale, it might show Epic that they won't have it their own way forever if they keep fecking with it. Then again, who am I kidding. We know how this ends :(

Keep on listening to reddit and people will keep buying skins and emotes.

Anyone follow Keemstar's Friday tournaments? I was watching bits yesterday and HighDistortion might actually be a God.

Saw a few games. The level of play is insane! TSM and Faze teams are the strongest but I think it's more due to these players getting to play as a team regularly. Ninja changes his partner almost every week which puts him at a huge disadvantage. I also found the 1m charity event very interesting as these guys got to play against each other.
