Gaming Football Manager 2018

Apparently all 3 striker formations feckup the opposition looks like a engine flaw according to SI forums.

Last season engine couldn't handle strikerless formation it didnt know how to react with not marking anyone.

3 striker formation was used from long time, there wasn't many issues before. I for one used the same formation as my primary from 2011. Looks like this year engine can't handle. IIRC they have changed the engine this year.

Right, so I got this and started at United (in Dec 2017).
Snapped up Ozil and Asenseio (RMadrid chap).

Selling by the bucketload, any good signings I should make, esp defenders?
haha omg so unrealistic!

Paz is going to find his manager assassinated by a virtual Spurs fan

I started a new game with WBA, and for once I'm not doing horribly with them. In November now, and we're 6th in the league after 13 games, even picking up victories against Spurs and City on the way.

I signed four players in the summer window:

Sergio Canales from Real San Sebastian for £4.3m
Yuto Nagatomo from Inter for £2.9m
Gustavo Gomez from AC Milan on a season's loan
John Guidetti from Vigo for £13m.

The only player departing was Brunt, who went to a surely drunk Guardiola at City for £7.5m.

Canales has added some much needed creativity to the team, Nagatomo offers cover for both fullback positions (and might even be first choice at RB over Nyom) as well as being a good wingback (which helps with the formation I play). Guidetti has 7 goals in 11 games. Gomez...is trying, bless him.

My biggest challenge in January is going to be keeping hold of Chadli. He's top scorer (8), highest average rating (7.55) and most assists (4), and we've got United, Barcelona and PSG interested in him (as well as Palace, Everton and Southampton, but they can piss off). I've started retraining him as a striker, but I don't think I'm going to be able to see how that turns out.

Does anyone know wtf is going on with my game? There's just random missing letters and things everywhere...

Rashford won world player of the year and also all the awards in England for 2 years running, now he wants to join Real Madrid as they play in better league. Premier league is #1 in ranking with La Liga second but somehow Rashford thinks La Liga is better. I agreed to sell him if Madrid makes 100 Million bid, then I decided to offer him to the clubs. PSG made 99 Million bid and he accepted the offer earning 375K per week. Surprisingly better league argument was dead.

Now Martial wants to join PSG, same with Pogba. Martial made the noise 2 seasons before but I offered him big contract, now he is set on leaving to PSG. Pogba also thinks same. Both said PSG value them higher than I do. Both players are dressing room leaders and two highest paid players in the club. Not sure how much higher can I rate them. Also Pogba is vice captain.

Told both can leave if PSG makes 100 million bid. Luckily they haven't made the bid yet and it's nearly August.

I find all problems are solved, contracts, players wanting to leave, players unhappy with treatment, lack of football, by the lovely new feature of asking another player to intervene, it always works, it's hilarious really, considering when you talk to the player directly it pretty much never works.

Is it? Read sometime back that it's useless feature as it never works. So I never tried it.

I tried it twice and gave up - both times the player told me they wouldn't intervene.

Well I won't be trying it anytime soon. As it is I have pissed out players, don't want to add more players to that list.

Was way easier than it should've been.
Or it wasn't and should be done in real life!

I am neither of these, but

ManCity always sacks Pep.

In my game Pep got sacked and then later became Liverpool manager.
Klopp was sacked and became Spurs manager.
Conte was finally sacked (playing against him was so shit with this defensive game).
Biggest of them all Poch was sacked by Spurs and became Sunderland manager. Later he was sacked as Sunderland manager

Pep teams are always rubbish in FM. City are so bad in this FM. Currently sitting in 16th in my third season after spending £130m on Dybala.

FFS, I hate the teamtalk thing where one player is doing well, and the rest of the team are doing crap. So you do the "STOP BEING SHIT" teamtalk, and that one player gets all shirty. So then you do the individual "except you" thing, and they're still sulking.

I don't know. That really bothered me in the last few versions, but it's mostly been working for me so far.

You can hold shift and click from top to bottom on the list of players to select all then just hold Ctrl and deselect the one who's been decent to give the stop being shite talk to the rest.

Oh, that's going to be useful. Thanks.

Almost into the second season with West Brom. We finished 6th last season (and probably could have done better, if we hadn't gone on a midseason run of 8 games without a win). It was actually a season of thirds. We picked up three points in those eight games. Versus 22 in the 12 before, and 33 in the 18 after. (I never said the thirds were equal).

Qualification has meant that I've had to strengthen the squad as much as I can, looking to transfer listed players in the main, while looking to make sure that star players remain at the club. (Swear if Arsenal make one more insulting offer for Guidetti, I'm biting someone). To that end, only James McClean (Crystal Palace for £2.8m), Allen Nyom (Fiorentina for £3.1m) and Salomon Rondon (Lazio on loan, £19.5m at the end of it) have left.

Coming in we have Chris Smalling for £10m, Davide Zappacosta for £8.25m, Stefano Sturaro for £6.25m, Predrag Rajkovic for £8m, Xabi Etxeita for £0 and Jesse Lingard on a loan deal that could result in a £15m deal.

With Rondon having gone, I do think I'll need somebody to back-up Guidetti. Morrison is refusing to sign a contract, and I've got an £11m bid from Burnley that I think I'll accept. Although, amusingly, Morrison's testimonial is coming up, and I might go to it telling Middlesbrough "erm, he's not here, lads." With Rodriguez and Chadli capable striking back-up options, I might not need to spend.

The Rajkovic thing is one I'm excited about, because I've signed him as a De Gea replacement before when I've played United on FM17, so if he's still as good as he was on there, I've got a bargain. The only issue is he couldn't get a work permit, so he's on loan at Grenada (with the option to recall, because I'm going to appeal in Jan).

Edit: I did sell Morrison. Used the money to loan Batshuayi and sign a 21 year old called Roland Sallai from APOEL.

feck me. I forgot all about Brexit, and I just got Hard Brexit. Based on how impossible it is to sign South American talent from before, my game might just have gotten a lot harder.

Wait, that's an actual feature in this game?!

It was last year too, though they've weighted in more in favour of hard brexit now. There are a few variations. You can get one where you can have 17 foreign players registered, which is considered soft Brexit. In the one I got, all new EU players will have to get work permits, which makes signing youth players nearly impossible. I believe you can also have variations where Ireland and the UK keep free movement, or where Scotland leaves the UK to stay in the EU. Possibly others as well.

Called in for a board meeting, where they suggest increasing the transfer budget. I say yes, because I want to strengthen.

"We are pleased to confirm the transfer budget has been increased to £379k"

...

where's the button that lets me poison the chairman's tea?

It's time for another WBA update that nobody asked for or wants but dammit I like writing so you're getting it anyway. But first, I received an e-mail from my DOF, telling me about this player that my scouts have found. Estimated cost: £3.1m - £4.6m, sounds good. Potential ability 4*, yes, I like that.

Contracted to: West Brom.

I'M NOT PAYING ME £4.6M TO BUY A PLAYER OFF MYSELF.

Right, I'll spoiler the diary bit because it's probably going to be long.

Anyway, season one saw us finish 6th and qualify for the Europa league. Season 2...almost got me sacked. We finished 10th, got nowhere in the cups, and went out in the quarter finals in Europe (which I thought was pretty good for West Brom, but the board didn't agree).

The signings were a mixed bunch. (You might want to refer back to my post just up the page for them).

The good:

Sturaro - signing of the season (according to the fans). 7.07 rating across 37 games.

Xabi Etxeita - average rating of 6.94 over 26 games isn't spectacular, but he was free, so I'm counting him as a success

Jesse Lingard - 8 goals and 7 assists, average rating of 7 across 31 games. I know he could have done better, but still good.

Roland Sallai - not a spectacular season, average rating of 6.96 in 26 games, 6 goals and 3 assists, but there's promise there. Just 22 years old.

The bad:

Chris Smalling - a series of abysmal performances at the end of the season was the final straw after a pretty average spell. Sold to Stoke after just 21 games.

Davide Zappacosta - an average rating of 6.83, and no assists. He's pretty young though, so I'm hoping the second season is better.

Predrag Rajkovic - spent the season on loan at Grenada. He might have been good for them, I don't really care. He's got his work permit now though.

Michy Batshuayi - only there to offer support to Guidetti. Scored 4 goals in the league before his position was usurped by an 18 year old.

So now I head into the third season with the board threatening me with the sack if I don't start with 11 points in 5 games. So obviously those 5 games include two really bloody hard ones. Watford (H), Man City (A), Arsenal (H), Middlesbrough (A) and Leicester (H). I've also had Chadli and Guidetti demand transfers, which hasn't helped anything.

So, outgoings:

Chris Smalling - Stoke - £5.5m
Nacer Chadli - Liverpool - £20.5m
Salomon Rondon - Lazio - £19.75m
John Guidetti - Middlesbrough - £35m (£41.5m)
Kieran Gibbs - Everton - £24m (£34m)

In:

Mamadou Sakho - Crystal Palace - £24m (desperately in need of a defender)
Alassane Plea - OGCN - £21m (22 goals for them last season, third highest in Ligue 1, not sure why he was transfer listed)
Yacine Brahimi - PSG - £12m (effectively the Chadli replacement)
Jean Michael Seri - OGCN - Free (I mean...he was free...and he's rated 4*)
Lucas Paqueta - INT - £8.75m (my DOF found him. He looks good. 3.5 CA potentially 4.5. Just 21 years old)
Lincoln - BOT - £11m (you can get him for peanuts at the start of the game, but he'd already moved from FLA to BOT, luckily with a minimum fee release clause in his contract. Just 18 years old, but I have travelled into the future in an alternate dimension to discover that he can turn out very good).
Ruben Duarte - Vallecano - £1.7m (was meant to cover for Gibbs, will now cover for Gibbs' replacement)
Trent Alexander-Arnold - Liverpool - loan (DOF did it. Suppose he's good cover for Zappacosta)
Lucas Martinez Quarta - River - £3m - (DOF did it again. 3* CA, potentially 4*. 23 years old. Lots of potential)
Luke Shaw - Man Utd - loan (JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST too late to sign him properly. Hoping to get that tied up in January, as he's transfer listed for just £9m. That's why I was willing to let Gibbs go).

It's a lot of movement. The board ultimatum hanging over my head is a real pain in the neck, because I think they're going to need time to gel together. Time I haven't got. Even if I win the three more realistic games, I still need two draws or one win out of Arsenal and City.

So I've probably written all this, and I'll be sacked in a few minutes time.

@Minkaro Sign Shaw ASAP if you can as if players who are listed do alright on loan they tend to take them off the transfer list after a couple of months.

So I got this over xmas and have started a save as Fulham. Haven't played since FM12(?) so enjoying getting back into this although adjusting to the changes.

Any tips regarding the game in general or how to get the best out of my Fulham team. Small transfer budget so any decent loan options would be good.

Anyone find it easier to get players if you get a director of football and let him negotiate. I tried to sign Mbappe and had no hope. Had about 150 million to spend and couldn't get him. He then went on and had a ridiculous season, came second in the Ballon D'Or and scored 30 odd goals and I put him as a transfer target that summer and the DOF got it done for 120 million. I was delighted.

Now I'm just trying to figure out the best position to play him in.

They've already done it! I offered him a contract, and he turned it down, so I had to leave it a bit before I could offer him another one, and after five decent games he's off the market.

On the plus side, I didn't get sacked.
