Gaming Football Manager 2009

Back to Uni today, so no wasting time on FM for me now.

Just got started in the 2009/10 season.

My First XI:

Keirrison - Marko Pantelic/Hélder Postiga

Hazard/Almeida

Izmailov - Moutinho

Veloso/Zuculini

Ronny/Srna - Anderson Polga - Daniel Carriço - Santon/Srna

Rui Patricio/Stojkovic

I've signed a young Russian regen named Ruslan Simokov and he's brilliant. 20 years old with great finishing and composure, and has scored 5 goals in his first 5 games for me. I intended to use him sparingly this season but he's been so good I've been starting him regularly.

Also bizarrely I've not conceded a single goal in Serie A for my first 7 games. I've scored 16 and let in 0, even though I don't think my defence is that great. I spent ages working on a good defence at City yet I still conceded goals with world class defenders. Suppose it shows sometimes the best players just don't work together.

Cesc, you have inspired me to try a more challenging game than my normal beats. I fancy trying some minnows in a fairly weak league...hmm, perhaps a german team.

Try everyone's second favourite German side - Hoffenheim.

They've got a few quality players too, enough to build a side around (or fob off for some good money). I suppose this probably doesn't count as a minnow side though.

AFC Wimbledon are now on course for promotion to league 1. Going for their 3rd promotion in 4 seasons. Lower league games are alot more enjoyable in FM09 imo. Ive refused Notts County and Crewe Alex to keep my Dons dream alive!

I started a game as Dortmund and realised I was somewhat out of my depth. I mean bloody hell, their first team and reserves totals nearly 50 players. Some serious work will be needed here i feel. Im opting for a 4-1-3-1-1 type formation, should provide the balance I need.

Who are their key/star players? I'll have a peek on mine.

They've got Sahin, right?

Oh, and they seemed to produce the most outrageously good strikers in one of my CM03/04 games... Though I could never poach them... If that helps...

Has anyone ever played as Lyon?

Flexed the chance to use them last night, I think i'm going to drop that VERY boring United game and use them, lots of quality, I plan on selling Benzema after a year... priority on CL glory.

Why Lyon? Why not Bordeoux or PSG? I went Nantes, Lens and more recently Angers with my CM03/04 (was playing Angers as recently as 2 weeks ago).

All you've esentially done is gone from one practically-certain winners in one League, to the utmost certainties in another.

The game's pretty much pointless if you just go the big sides all the time. Hell, I only downloaded FM09 two weeks ago, and I haven't even made an Arsenal game yet.

I suppose you could save your United one, quit the job and move onto a different club from there, which would be interesting as all the good players you'll invariably buy when you start a new game will have already been at some other club for years.

I was thinking Bordeaux... what is it with their Academy? They always have historically in FM games created proper gems of regens, I remember I had a game into 2023 and the majority of the French national team started there in their academy.

I agree, up to a point. Though, the first thing I do in every FM is start a United game. And indeed I just started one a couple of days ago, and I'm still having some fun with it. I know that won't last for very many seasons, though, depending on how much of a challenge the game becomes.

To "cure" that I've also taken to starting a new Maidenhead United game with every FM, since FM05 I think. They're the lowest of the low (they weren't even in it one, since they got relegated), and it's a very fun challenge to take them up to the Premier League (without cheating).

Another game, and perhaps the one that has been the most fun with me for FM09, that I haven't had as a tradition, but that I will definitely make into one, is where I started a game unemployed with low reputation, and just go wherever I fancy (or wherever they will have me).

After getting thoroughly humiliated by Liverpool the season before in Europe, and being treated as their feeder club for about 5 seasons, this was immensely satisfying.

Walid Salama:

salama.jpg

Cracking regen, and about the only one my useless scouts have ever got right. Believe it or not I have had his composure and heading at 20 as well before, but pre season training has caused a few of his stats to deteriorate.

Came one point away from doing the treble, as well. beat Valencia in the cup final 2-0. Was one point behind Barcelona with 4 games left and Barcelona at Camp Nou being my final game of the season. Then I got beat 2-1 by Zaragoza. Won my next game, Barca won their next two and I figured it was over. Then out of nowhere Zaragoza beat Barcelona and it's back on! Unfortunately my penultimate game was against Aguero Madrid and he ripped me a new one. I had conceded 8 goals all season in the league, Aguero put three past me in that one game and made the last game against Barca meaningless unfortunately. What made it worse is that I beat them at Camp Nou and only finished a point behind them. ARSE

Sahin aye, he is a decent one. Strikers is actually an area that i am extremely weak on. I only have one (Frei) rated 4-stars, then 2 3-stars and a 2-star.

The hardest part is that the club has quite a low reputation, its hard to attract the kind of players i really want.

I havent actually got many star players at all. Dede - my left back - is pretty decent, and i signed Santon from Inter, so my fullback options are pretty good, and i have a decent midfield.

Weakest areas are probably the wings (although Santon helps here too) and up front. Strangely though, in the games ive played so far, scoring goals hasnt been a problem, ive been doing extremely well in pre-season and early league games.

That guy's fecking amazing.

I notice he's from Egypt, now bear with me here but isn't Egypt near Israel? It's also mentioned in the bible various times. Now Walid has the same amount of letters as Jesus, and Salama has the same amount as Christ.

His jumping's 19 - Jesus ascended to heaven.
His strength's 19 - Jesus moved the boulder that entombed him after he rose again (also ties in with jumping).
Balance of 17 - he walked on water, no?
First touch of 20 - his touch was known to cure diseases and cure the blind.
Creativity of 16 - water to wine. Say no more.
Flair of 15 - he had a wicked fecking beard, didn't he?

So as you can see, by adding 2 with 2 I have successfully concluded that you've got Jesus christ playing in your side...

Nice work. I suppose the key for now is getting the tactic right, one that exploits your strengths and minimises the weaknesses...

That's a reasonable assumption actually, on more than one occasion I have shouted 'Jesus Christ!' at him, so maybe subconsciously I actually knew all along who he was? His regen photo has him with a ridiculous curly perm though, so obviously Jesus is in disguise.

I've had him from the age of 18 and Madrid have literally bid higher and higher figures for him every season, Perez must have burst more than the one vein trying to get hold of him.Fortunately I managed to keep hold of him even when paying him 22k a week, it's only last season I put him on a 100k a week contract. He has an annoying habit of going missing for 89minutes though and just as I am swearing at the screen and promising to drop him he scores from about 90 yards out.

I normally put my awesome youth players onto a big contract when they start stepping up, out of principle. Dont want them to hate me for only paying them £10k p/w after all.

Incidentally is it even possible to get the maximum amount of stars on every aspect of training? Here is what mine looks like at the moment

trainingx.jpg

Maxed out strength, aerobics, shooting and ball control but cant max out the others. Where am I going wrong? Though i think I might retire now that I have completed my mission of breaking the Barca/Madrid hold on the league anyway

Its probably "possible" but extremely hard. If you simply find one coach who is 7-star on each catergory then it would be doable that way (frankly i use GenieScout for checking their star ratings, rather than calculating it all).

How does geniescout work? Some of the coaches who have a stat at 20 aren;t as good as ones with the same stat at 18 for some reason so I've gone through so many freakin coaches. The reason I have so many right now is because my board wont let me sack any of them, despite the fact it will only cost me about 150k per coach. I take it sticking five 6-star coaches on a particular aspect of training doesn't boost it up to 7-stars?

This season went to shit, and I'm not exactly sure how. I lost in the Semi of both big cups, and I'm going to finish 4th in the league. If I'd kept up my good form in the league I'd at least finish 3rd, and maybe 2nd. Then I lost 3 times in 4 games, and the one game I won was against 3rd place City. Now I just had to beat Fulham away, because City wouldn't beat Chelsea. But, Srna didn't want that, so he hacked someone down with two feet after 15 minutes. Then they scored. Then Nevland scored a screamer from 30 yards.

I'm going to go hang myself. It's unbelievable. It's genuinely the worst set of events I've ever had on FM09, and possibly any FM/CM.

First of all, stop using GenieScout! :p

Secondly, I posted the formula for coaches a couple of pages back. The formula changed, so it's not as simple as having one stat ("attack coaching") very high to actually have 7 stars.

I'm not using geniescout. It's just that by constant trial and error I have noticed stats don't always equate to the best coaches, half the time their reputation is the most important thing, if their world class or continental or whatever. Seriously I must have gone through over 100 coaches or summit. I saw that formula but it looked way too complicated to be honest

Ah never mind, that formula is pretty straight forward actually. But I've just tested it and one of my coaches who has 7-stars for strength/aerobics only adds up to 242 using that formula

Here are my coaches. I'm allowed 26 and i pretty much just searced for 20s in each cateogory (attacking, defending, fitness etc) separately.

This is one of my first games that i'm actually noticing the coaches doing their jobs in terms of players learning alot and at a decent rate.

In other news i just noticed that City signed this tit Christian Benitez on my game for £32mil, it's funny for me and my mate as on our Brighton game we bought him in the championship and played him about 25 odd games and he was the biggest donkey, only scoring about 2 goals.

I like FM09 as City always provide comedy gold with their signings.

Are you using the latest patch? If you are, then you've been incredibly lucky in that you've actually found coaches with 7 stars if you're using that criteria. If you're using the earlier patches, then that was the way to go, I believe.

I'm not sure, I think i'm using the second patch. (But i've no idea to be honest).

Right I have just completely revamped my squad, sold off half my team and taking a chance on my youth stepping up to the plate. Just lost my first choice right back, centre back, central midfielder, right winger and striker. Admittedly my defenders were lost to release clauses that I forgot about, and others I decided to get rid because I was fed up of them moaning that I rejected a bid for them from Madrid/Arsenal, despite the fact I am reigning European champions and Madrid have won sweet FA in about 4 years. Made 88mil and spent 4mil. Pretty big gamble, but when you have a striker in your under 19's earmarked as the 'next Emile M'Penza' it would be foolish not to take a risk on him...

...And I've just been dicked 4-0 by Barcelona in the super cup. The 'next Emile M'Penza' finished on a 4.7. Awesome.

Heh sod off. I've just been beaten 3-1 by Sevilla in my first league game an' all. And the 'next Emile M'Penza' didn't even have a shot. I'm starting to think he might really be the next Emile M'penza after all.

Unfortunately.

Unfortunately.

I'm playing as Boro at the moment, just gotten into the CL Knockout Round for the first time.

My first team is something like

Ochoa
Azpilicueta
Mathieu/Monzon
Micah Richards(swap for Joe Mattock. Best deal ever)
Beevers
Ljaiic/Lennon
Di Maria/Begona
Bender/Schneiderlinn(ex Southampton blokey)
Ramires(Brazilian bloke, like Essien but calculator-less)
Aguero/Aquino
Marquinhos(best striker in the game, IMO)/ Fleck

Like most of my long-term games though, my players are too good now, and I'm going to win the league comfortably, so I'll probably quit soon. I do love a good relegation struggle.

Sell them and try and produce some good youngsters. I can probably give you a good deal on the next Emile M'Penza if you want?

And a good squad isn't everything. I took over as Spain manager in the hope that I could derail my opponents campaigns by playing their best players for 90mins in every international game and wearing them out. Anyway long story short, my plan went tits up after I managed to somehow not qualify for the WC with a team consisting of Cassilas, Villa, Torres, Fabregas, Iniesta, Bojan, Silva etc. I scraped a 1-0 against Japan, drew 0-0 with Ukraine and got murdered 3-0 by Nigeria. I naturally resigned immediately afterwards to save myself the humiliation of being sacked, and bizarrely the next day the Spanish FA wanted me to reconsider my resignation and rehired me straight away! I'm now in the process of making them regret that decision by losing my first game in the Euro qualifiers 2-1 to Hungary.

You're a legend.

Thank you.

Here is a graph depicting Spain's position in the world rankings. Try and guess when I took over as manager

Funniest thing was Casillas through a major hissy fit and resigned his position as captain. He must have been truly pissed when Spain rehired me :D
