Gaming Football Manager 2009

i do try to limit my spending, mostly. I didnt buy any of the likes of Messi, Aguero, Villa and whatnot, just that ive always felt that a Fabregas-Veloso partnership (in an FM perspective) would be unstoppable, De Rossi was aging a bit, and so it seemed a very good fit. I had been chasing him and trying to unsettle him for years, but Arsenal were playing hardball and rejected several £100m+ offers.

Ive decided that he will be my last giant transfer for a while - will use the rest of the money to try to clear some of our debt.

I just don't get any satisfaction from buying well known players for massive amounts of money, in the 7 seasons I played with Man Utd I never paid over 20m, which was for Hamsik in my first season.

In the last 3 - 4 seasons I had transfer budgets of 100m+ and never spent near that much, I just made sure I had great youth academies and bought young, promising players. I ended up with 5 regens with 185+ ability by my 7th season, and I paid less than 20m for them combined. It's so much better that way, in my opinion.

i do exactly the same, regarding the young players. I bought Bojan, Vela, Saivet and Marquinhos within a couple of years of starting (for a combined of about £20m) and they are now the entirity of my attacking force - along with Rooney and Ronaldo.
My current reserve/youth teams are full of PA180+ players and the likes, but sometimes it is fun to be able to splash the cash big-time.
To be fair, with the way that transfer prices inflate so much over time, £140m sounds worse than it is. You see quite a few clubs splashing £30m+ on thoroughly average players. Even Watford are doing it, and affording to pay 100k p/w to multiple players. Its just inflation.

How would you know that? Are you using Genie Scout? I've had a couple games where I used that, but it really takes all the challenge away from it, and sooner rather than later gets very boring. My most satisfying games are where I really have to struggle for success.

Few things are as satisfying as finding that one true gem of a player and bringing him up to become one of the worlds best. Finding him by pressing "search" on Genie sort of takes the sanctification away, if you know what I mean :p

i have Genie Scout, but i rarely use it now. I never use it to search for players that i would otherwise not find, but i do sometimes use it to check the CA/PA of players that i already own, to help decide whether to sell or retain them, for example.

I just tried to take my game I installed on my laptop and play it on my Mac, and for some reason there is not option to confirm anything? Like make offers etc.

Any ideas anyone?

Just quoting this to see if anyone has any ideas. My summer holidays start tomorrow - 6 weeks, and id like to spend a bit of time playing this!

The one thing that irritates me about this game is the enourmous difference between playing home and away games. I know even the top teams might make slight alterations when playing away from home, but it's ridiculous that my side plays so well at home but is dire away.

Even if I'm playing as a good side away to a club battling to avoid relegation, chances are they'd create more opportunities and have more possession. It may well be my tactics. I've made an effort to adopt a more conservative approach away from home but it hasn't really worked. I just don't think you should have to make radical changes when playing a clearly inferior team just because your away from home.

I hate the repetetiveness of each season. Play as a big team(top4) and it follows a similar trend. I've ended up changing random players stats and potential to mix it up a bit, was sick of arsenal signing touloulan and guardado EVERY fecking season aswell as Barca signing some mega striker, etc..

So last night my Genoa side (sitting 4th) flattened the top side, Roma, 4-1 in an important clash.

My computer then proceeded to freeze right after the game. FML.

I've also noticed every side in Italy (so far) stack their midfield, which in turn makes them rather narrow tactically.

To defeat this I've come up with a 2-3-2-1-2 tactic, I can't put up any screen-shots ATM to show you so I'll just explain it.

Obviously I have my Keeper. I have two standard CB's (set to CB). Then there's two Wing Backs (set to Wing Back) with a DM in the traditional DM position. I have two CM's, playing mostly in a defensive capacity. Just ahead I have my AM (set to AM) with my two Strikers leading the line:

......................GK

.............CB..............CB

RWB...............DM................LWB

.............CM..............CM

.....................AM

.............ST..............ST

Yeah they've got a bit of toe.

One's Vanden Borre (or Santon/Mesto when I feel like moving Vanden Borre to CM), and the other's that Calderon guy I posted up the other day. I found my strikers seem to move wide with this tactic, which allows Gasbaronni (my AM) to exploit the space - he scored a hattrick in the game that froze.

Sounds like a good setup.

Started another game last night with Brazil. Media was on my case for ignoring a lot of Euro-based stars but I ended up with a 0-0 away to Chile and thumping Bolivia 4-0 at home

Can you start with being just a Manager of a Country?

That's awesome.

Just a hint, if you do take control of a nation, and want to get reports on all players you can select, be sure to use a person with good scout stats. I made the mistake of sending my physio out to report on all my players, came back saying that they all arent good enough to play for Brazil, even the likes of Douglas Costa and such.

Either he's a bitter, twisted fecker, or he's just plain shit. I'm leaning towards the latter :p

Last weekend I created a manager and left him on holiday all day while I was out. Its now 2016 and I’ve created a new manager to take over my local team in the League of Ireland. Don’t have a clue who anyone is. Its pretty good though. Utd have a shit team. Spurs, Man City and Arsenal seem to be the big sides.

No surprises there.

Any chance of screenshots of the squads?

City have signed Love, Zirkhov, Valencia and Hamsik on mine.

There'd be others too, but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

i actually used a similar formation to that whilst playing as Arsenal - but with 3 CBs and only 1 striker. Worked pretty decently.

Douglas Costa is absolute wank. Honestly, the worst £8m I've ever spent on the game.

Is it considered cheating if you change the stats of some players, because some players are fecking useless. Berbatov only got 1 goal in 3 seasons for me once! But i started again and won everything in one season. Booyah.

Of course it's considered cheating, but no one is going to storm your house at night for it :p

And if Berbatov only got one goal in 3 seasons... actually, I'm not sure how that's even possible. He'd probably score much more than that as a left back.

I used the exact formation in FM08 and it worked like a charm.

yep easily the best in the Series, was at Roma, did very well and got offered the United job (rejected the Liverpool job along the way too)

Just started a brand new game (with the latest transfers, etc) with my brother, I'm Barca and he's R.Madrid

i installed it again  the monster game i had was with Derby County won the league with them after 5 seasons had Owen,Assulin,Marcelo,Ratinho,Ochoa,Lucas,Evans and some CB from leeds called kenneth who was a beast in the air scored like 15 goals a season.
am thinking of starting a game with them again. hook me up with a decent tactic for the championship.

I have the 07 CD sitting on my desk

so tempted right about now

Had a similar situation back in April.

Still playing that game. Year 2022 and I've won the Championship with Havant & Waterlooville. Hope my stay in the Premier League will this time be longer than the last one, which only lasted for one season.

If you want uncomplicated, play CM Italy. It might be free, but I can't confirm that. It was great.

CM97/98 was also excellent. I might have to go play that again, though in the latest patch Bakayoko isn't as great, which takes away half the fun :(

i sold him to chelski and hes been doing mental.

mind you, this is the same game that had Tevez scoring 30+ per season for Madrid on the right wing and being nominated for player of the year.

I think stat editing can be OK in some situations - like the grossly exaggerated stats on half of the Arsenal squad, and how the likes of Rafael and Fabio seem destined to end up at about league 2 standard according to FM. could do with some proper updates to player potential.

Aren't they -9 in the last patch? Even if they only get the lowest possible -9 potential, they'll still be good Premier League players. In the earlier patches, not so much.
