Gaming Football Manager 2009

Just got the game the other day and decided to start off with Genoa.

My budget's relatively small (7 million) and my squad's got a few of the essentials - good CB's (two of which are young and have potential - one's on loan from Juve), a good versatile RB (Vanden Borre) and a quality striker in Milito.

First I thought I'd fob him off to raise some funds but it turns out you can't get much for him, not worth it as I might as well use him up.

So far I've signed Lavezzi, Zuculini, Guana (from Palermo), and Diego Calderon. Calderon's the surprise packet, and at 100k I'm laughing:

Any other bargains young or otherwise I should be looking out for?

BTW this is the tactic I'll be using:

I've used it back when I played (play) 03/04 and it never failed me. When my mate got this game not too long ago he was struggling with United, I came over and set his side to my specific tactics and he went on and thrashed the League.

Zuculini is a legend. 17 was his magical number. I signed him for pittance when he was 17, two years later he had 17 for most stats in his mental, 17 for most of his physical and 17 for tackling, passing, marking and first touch - then I sold him to Liverpool for £17m!

I know, the individual player tactics vary from player to player. But generally I go for this:

Full Backs carry the ball, cross more often, cross to the near post.

Wingers carry the ball, cross more often, cross to the far post and are encouraged to make attacking runs. They obviously have an attacking mentality. They should always close down players.

Central Midfielders always close down. They should have high stamina, tackling, work rate and determination, being good decision makers and good passers are also a must. If they're very good creatively they'll get some creative freedom, but for the main they're just there to break up the play and spray passes around.

Strikers carry the ball, make attacking runs. They have an attacking mentality (and if they're good passers/decision makers they'll get creative freedom).

I just tried to take my game I installed on my laptop and play it on my Mac, and for some reason there is not option to confirm anything? Like make offers etc.

Any ideas anyone?

But you haven't got the wingers set on forward runs often on that screenshot, do you? They don't have any forward arrows.

I developed my tactics over a long game where I swapped clubs if I got a better opportunity. I also "studied" a rather long FM tactics guide, which opened my eyes on some important issues. Like how the mentality of a certain position shouldn't be too far away from the next position. Or how to properly set up two strikers who'll actually work together. I've got four different tactics of the same formation. Normal, Attacking, Defensive and Ultra Defensive (for the 85th minute of the Champions League final when 1-0 up). It usually works brilliantly (though there's no way to get around the occasional fluke).

Cesc, see if you can grab Andrea Mazzarani from Udinese.

Can play anywhere on the right side of the pitch.

Grows into being quite a gem too.

César Azpilicueta is also another good RB prospect (at Osasuna)

Haha, funny you mention Mazzarani as I'd just scouted him not 10 minutes ago. Though I signed Santon from Inter and he too can play anywhere up/down the right.

Really need a quality winger or young striker now though, and I've still got 4.8 million for transfers...

How on earth did you get Lavezzi at Genoa?

As for right wingers:

Rafinha at Schalke can play at MR

Others you could try;

Piotr Trochowski
Alexandr Hleb
Ignazio Abate

HTH

Not too sure man, I pounced on him almost immediately and got him for a bargain - 2.3 million, and I think I could've probably worked a bit more off it too. Looking at his history he'd played for Genoa when he first moved abroad, so maybe he's got a soft spot for them?

I had an offer for Saviet at 1.2 million accepted, though he was simultaneously considering a professional contract from Bordeoux too and accepted that instead, my bid was removed and they haven't accepted anywhere near that amount since. Nuts to that.

Chyzhov from Shakhtar at 700k is a bit of a bargain too.

Funny you should mention Santon as well. In my long term game, which is in 2020 now, I've been at Roma for a few seasons (they're rich, rich, rich!), and my Full-back/Right-wing pairing is Mazzarani/Santon. I bought Santon for £50 million from Reading (I was the one who brought him to Reading too, along with Aguero), and Mazzarani was already there. They're fecking brilliant. Both can play both positions as well, if either of them gets injured.

Oh, and if you ever need a goalkeeper... Rene Adler, from Leverkusen. Alright, he's not cheap, but he'll be the best keeper in the world for quite a few years. Aguero will be the best striker, obviously. I couldn't say about the rest, since my 2020-game is dominated by re-gens (a part from a few real ones, like Santon and Mazzarani).

I actually first signed him with St. Pauli, when he was just a very promising youngster. Then I left St. Pauli (for Blackburn), and forgot all about him. Then, a season into my Roma career (with a Reading-stint in the middle) I found him again, completely unrelated, in Porto. I was ecstatic. And then, a bit later, I became Spain manager as well, so it worked out very well :p

One of the best aspects (funnily enough) of doing a game where I start fairly lowly, and work myself up the ladder, taking better chances as they come, is the amount of talented youngsters you find on the way up. This guy is one example, but another is when I was at my first club, Bodø/Glimt. They were a relegation contender in the very average Norwegian League, and I had no money to buy established players. So what I did was look for talented youngsters.

Some of them were re-gens, and some of them followed me all through my career, as I bought them to new clubs. One I didn't bring along was Christian Degn, a danish striker. My decent scouts and assistant manager assured me he was good enough for the Norwegian league, but that he wouldn't get any better. So while I brought some with me, he stayed behind.

That is, a year after I left he got sold to Wolves for £2.2 million, and a year after that to City for £19.25 million. This is him now. Not the best striker in the world, but certainly better than Norwegian league standard!

It's a bit weird, but the ones you get wrong are as big a part of what makes these kinds of games so fun as the ones you get right. And it was very refreshing to repeatedly see that even 20/20 scouts will get it wrong, either overrating or underrating players.

That game actually turned into one of my longest games ever. It's been a very long time since I managed to play the regular United-game for longer than a few years, and even the "get Maidenhead United into the Premier League" scenario I stumbled upon a few FM's ago gets old eventually. Before this, it must have been years since I last even applied for other jobs on CM/FM.

It also makes me rant.

Is it possible to play a 'quick' FM game?

Like in the good old days when you could go through a season in an afternoon?

In an afternoon? Not going to happen. Well, maybe if you add the bare minimum of leagues and database size, and then do the bare minimum of actual playing in the game.

Have you ever been able to go through an entire season in an afternoon, though? I've played them all, and the only one I think would go that fast must be CM Italy.

I used to be able to start a game at breakfast and finish up before I went out for the night, I had a United game that went 27 seasons

One suggestion I offer to all FM'ers is this;
Focus on your backroom staff just as much as your players. I try to keep not only a world class squad, but purely the best in the way of coaches and scouts. This gives you far more accurate scout reports, better physios and more importantly, the best training possible for your players.

Playing as United, I have found it a fair bit too easy. I generally never buy players older than 25 (with a few exceptions), and by the time they are 30 I look to be selling them on, usually at a decent profit.

My top transfer fees to date have been:

Fabregas - £140m
Just signed him yesterday (in the year 2015) to be my partner for Miguel Veloso in the middle (also have De Rossi, but he is 31 now and im looking to move him on)

De Rossi - £100m
First triple figure transfer ever! I needed a leader in midfield and he was the best around. Bought him in 2011 or so, so he was 27 at the time and has given me a few excellent seasons.

Micah Richards - £80m
"FM Legend" as they say.

Sakho - £55m
Another awesome defender. Him, Richards, Vidic and Mattock are my top defensive lineup now. Ferdinand is retired and Evra is too old.

Of course, like any good FM'er I also try to snap up the youth players like Saivet, Vela, Bojan and Marquinhos (who, along with Rooney and Ronaldo make my full attacking squad). If you dont mind a bit of semi-cheating, I recommend downloading GenieScout - it basically looks at your save game and grabs all the data - including CA and PA - for all the players in your database, meaning you can easily search for those -10 PA players without having to bother scouting in-game.
I used it for a while but it made the game a bit too easy, so ive stopped with it.

... Why are you paying so much for players?!

Some of those fees are like triple what they should be!

because i can. When im given a budget of £80m or so, can add another 20 to that from the equally high wage budget, then sell on a player or two...i have so much damn money i dont know what to do with it.

You have inspired me to start my annual United game, updated with the new guys and a few big transfers, see how long I go before I get bored.

Think I am going to invest heavily into youth in the first window and then see how it goes.

140m for Fabregas? fecking hell. That would just bore me making transfers like that.

i do try to limit my spending, mostly. I didnt buy any of the likes of Messi, Aguero, Villa and whatnot, just that ive always felt that a Fabregas-Veloso partnership (in an FM perspective) would be unstoppable, De Rossi was aging a bit, and so it seemed a very good fit. I had been chasing him and trying to unsettle him for years, but Arsenal were playing hardball and rejected several £100m+ offers.

Ive decided that he will be my last giant transfer for a while - will use the rest of the money to try to clear some of our debt.

Just something to point out, when people find good players with high stats, it's almost almost someone who's "Right only" or "Left only".

A player can seem good, but because of their one footedness they'll actually be a worse player than someone with lower stats but adept at using both feet.

A lot of people were confused when in FM08, Elano had ridiculous technical stats, higher than Ronaldo. He was one footed.

1. How did you make that much money in the game?

2. How did you clear the debt - you managed that?

1. By winning a lot, and the classic "buy low, sell high". I have sold probably a dozen players that I myself bought, but normally at a 100% (or more) markup. That is a major cash generator. Winning also gets you a lot of extra dosh to spend, getting rid of useless affiliate clubs and replacing them with profitable ones (i have "Financial benefits through merchandising" affiliates in Japan, India and the USA - all of which provide good boosts to revenue).
Finally, I persuaded the board to get 2 stadium expansions in the first 2 seasons that i was there - after that the Old Trafford capacity was a cool 100,000, and that in itself gives a very significant rise in income.

2) the debt gradually goes thanks to the above. Im still chipping away at it, but 2 seasons ago (2012/13) David Gill retired and one of the Glazers took over his position - and in doing so invested £100m or so into clearing the debts. I then also got a message during the same season that thanks to the overall good financial state of the club, we had been able to pay off a part of the debts.

Its all an upwards spiral, financially. The more debt you can wipe away, the more cash you end up with - and vice versa. Paying attention to the things like affiliated clubs, stadium expansion and simply treating the business side of the club seriously will drastically improve your finances.
Its all related of course, by having a great backroom staff and optimised training schedules, my players get the best development possible, which means that they become better players quicker, and hence are more valuable if and when i choose to sell them. I am quick to offload players in their prime (usually between the ages of 28-30) and hence get a great price for them (though there are obvious exceptions).

I just caved. I'm trying to find a copy of this game.

Sad for me, and my life.

I was going to try CM 01 02 with the patches but I cant even get setup.exe to work so whatever...

Lavezzi's been an inspired signing so far, scoring 7 goals in 7 games including a crucial double against Milan (to draw the game). For 2.3 million I'm laughing.

Santon's been fantastic too. And buying the second half of Gasbaronni's been an inspired decision to date, hopefully he can keep up his form for me (going at practically an assist a game so far).

My side's currently sitting four points clear at fourth, and would've been third had they put away the 19th placed Livorno (I think it was). Still got a long way to go, and Motta's already got 3-week injuries twice...

So I just got the game,
any ideas as to which teams to play with?

I was thinking United, but then thought otherwise...any good clubs to play with that have good players and a good transfer budget too? And no, don't want to play with any of United's rivals or another Premiership team really.

Leeds.

Beckford scores pretty much for fun in league one.

Oh wait...you said none of United's rivals.

Milan? Try turning it into a side with an av agre below 30

Am still stuck on Football Manager 2007, just can't get into FM08 or FM09 at alll...

Just started playing again, Decided to start an epic career with AFC Wimbledon. Ive a huge budget of 19k. Havent spent a penny yet. Signed 7 Irish kids who were out of contract. Its painful to start but slowly becoming very addictive.

I still have 07 on my other computer.

Had a monster AC Milan save. :D

had an Everton one. brilliant game! hope 2010 is more like it.

yep easily the best in the Series, was at Roma, did very well and got offered the United job (rejected the Liverpool job along the way too)

Just started a brand new game (with the latest transfers, etc) with my brother, I'm Barca and he's R.Madrid
