First (almost) Matchday
Sunday, Jan. 22nd gave us our first matchday that had more than two matches. Four whole matches this day! I didn’t actually watch any of these to be able to give a recap of all equally.
So here is my hindsight brief summary. Also I noticed that if I don't watch the game, the stats available are less detailed than if I watch matches.
Match Day, Jan.22
@antohan defeats @Gio 3-1
Anto breaks out of his non-winning streak with a match even with uncharacteristic 42% possession. Maybe not his watching his matches works better for him. Opposite might be true of Gio. Trapattoni remains calm however, as he knows that football gives happiness and suffering but always provides another chance to redeem and gain glory another day.
Match Stats
@spontaneus1 defeats @Invictus @Ecstatic 1-0
Spontaneus continues his winning ways by defeating Invictstatic and sending that team into worrying plunge down the table. One goal from Alan Shearer was all it took here. The lackadaisical Ancelotti managed side might not be receiving the intensity of training needed to keep up with this league.
Match Stats
@Macern defeats @sjor bepo 3-1
Jose Travassos (who? I had to google him myself but he is a Sporting (Por) icon - I am just excited I got a new line to drop in Football Forum - "you think Gelson Martins is good mate? He ain't no Jose Travassos ... *drop mic*) gets Macern going here keeping morale high after their Fifa Derby win. Sjor Bepo slips further down the table after briefly flirting with the European positions. To be frank, Alex Ferguson is doing better with Sjor side than I expected. One of the youngest, with only Uwe Seeler in his peak among the key players, I never expected Sjor to be midtable flirting with EL slots in the first season.
Match Stats
@Skizzo @Joga Bonito defeats @Moby @Raees
Skizzonito gets revenge on the team that broke their win streak while Moby and Raees prepare a legal brief to lobby me to change their formation to allow Zico into the side on regular basis. I am monitoring this situation like an eagle.
Match Stats
@harms vs. @simonhch
Two teams with European hopes. Simon has slipped down the table and harms is in danger of doing so with a loss here. Capello seems to have finally listened to the owner and is starting Hagi and Stojkovic regularly now. Fabs also appears to have permanently switched to a narrow 41311 in order to accommodate Hagi and Stojkovic. Udo Lattek has a regular starting 11 except for his holding midfielder where he has rotated Bonhof, Mauro Ramos and Tonono relatively equally all season. This time its Tonono who gets the confidence boost from his wily manager.
Match Stats
Pillow @altodevil86 vs. @P-Nut0712
Guardiola starts Batistuta this match. Not sure what Baggio has to to get a good run of games. Would have thought he’d be a great Pep false9 but apparently not this season. At least Gabriel gets a chance this match. Clough has been jiggering around with his side all season trying to find the best combination. Breitner now steps into midfield as Roger Byrne takes over at left back. Stoichkov finally gets a start but its at CF and at the expense of Cruyff who is out with a virus for a few days. Jack Kelsey also appears to have gotten himself permanently benched in favor of Milutin Soskic. Best continues to be Pnut’s most important players while Lefter continues to etch his name into history.
This match is no different as George Best makes a beautiful run past Byrne and gives Batigol a an easy pass to convert into a one nil lead at the half. Can the Alto Pillow side make a comeback?

Late January League Overview
@Tuppet solidifies his position at top of the league, ahead of Skizzonito by one single point. Red’nigmas are third but @ADJUDICATOR has two matches in hand to creep past them. @harms is fifth also in striking distance of the CL with only a win or two. At the bottom the sad state of Invictus Ecstatic sees them slip into the bottom three although they have two games in hand. Perhaps an injury to their no.1 Dino Zoff is partially to blame here. Meanwhile Mazhar and PNut struggle with their young sides hopefully developing their younger players for next season. One notable player rise is Diego Maradona who has rocketed into first place for Key passes. But notable for Spontan’s side is that Diego is still not on the board for assists, implying a lack of clinical finishing up front despite the good run in overall form. PNut continues to get some great individual performances out of his best players (Best, Keane) but still lacks a consistency in team play.
Team of the Month: @spontaneus1
He has established himself as a true European slot challenger with his continued run of good form. Diego and a few others seem to be willing this team on at the moment as Hitzfeld has neither made tactical nor personnel changes to spark this win streak. The Red’enigmas also deserve a mention here for consolidating their European challenger credentials this month. Pele and Dzajic are not on the leaderboards but their performances are highly rated and they are quietly boosting this team to wins. Anto seems to be relying a lot on the production of Fritz Walter (7g 5a) and Alberto Spencer (9g 5a). When they don’t produce the side loses. Likewise @beforekeane relies on Michael Laudrup, Garrincha and Piet Keizer having superb matches.
Tuppet misses team of the update due to the leprachaun side and a free kick wizard:
Player of the Month: Bican
On the back of two hat tricks, Bican has fired himself onto the leaderboard for goals. While Ademir remains top scorer (and top offside wanker) for the Skizzonito side with 16 in 14 games, Bican has been hotter this month than Puskas, Sindelar or Leonidas.
