First loss was bound to come but a bit miffed that Lobanovsky prefers Dorner/Madeley to Zito for that DM spot, provided Edwards isn't there of course.

I cant link now but Madely is a natural in every position on the pitch  its crazy

Wait until he gets older lol

If you wanted a backup you shouldnt have picked a 24 year old Turk to backup a 20 year old lol - i tried to warn you all about ages

Exactly. I sort of worried about that with Haynes (expected to be a Fritz Walter backup more than for the midfield) but never expected van Hanegem benched for Andreolo. Andreolo was there in case he ever wanted to play a pivot or as backup to Rijkaard, never crossed my mind Cruyff would play two defensive midfielders

Or that his All-Time XI LB wouldn't get a start :annoyed:

It's an arse to watch 3 of your top 6 picks benched while all the players you just about missed are having a stormer :annoyed: Blanchflower :( only reason I kept postponing him was worrying over van Hanegem not getting starts...

Tbf Andreolo is your highest or second highest rated player so I cant see him getting benched.

Unlike Hugo Sanchez and Lato who were rightly benched after poor performances

Indeed, the Luis Enrique of this FM version.

Can't think of a player more deserving than him though. Unbelievably and ridiculously versatile. Not just filling out positions in standard league matches or fillers but could be relied on in the highest profile games.

Paul Madeley(born September 20, 1944 in Leeds, England) was a footballer during Leeds United's glory era of the 1960s and 1970s and the last high-profile 'utility' player.

Madeley was a 'player without portfolio' in that he didn't have a specialist position on the pitch - he had ten of them.

In his long career with Leeds, which began with his debut in January 1964, he played in every position on the pitch except goalkeeper and wore every shirt from No.2 to No.11 (and occasionally No.12) as a result.

Nobody, including Madeley, could pin down what position he preferred - as the oft-heard footballing cliche says: "I don't mind where I play as long as I'm on the pitch", although this is usually uttered by players being asked to play out of their natural position.

Madeley was never asked to play out of position because every position was natural to him. It's not known whether Madeley ever used this answer in an interview.

Madeley's natural ability to adapt to a different role on a frequent basis meant that he was often in the side chosen by manager Don Revie at the expense of a 'specialist' in that position, though the majority of the time there was a player either injured or suspended whom Madeley would replace, mainly in defence although, having become a regular in the team from 1966, Madeley was in attacking positions when Leeds won their first major honours under Revie.

He became a regular in the team from 1966 onwards. In 1968 he scored the crucial away goal against Juventus which helped Leeds win the Fairs Cup - in the two legs he wore the No.8 shirt (striker, in Leeds' shirt allocation system - ace goalscorer ******* would later make it his own) and the No.10 shirt (attacking midfield player) respectively.

Leeds won the League Cup in the same year, and Madeley was the No.9 (a striker again) in the 1-0 win over Arsenal at Wembley.

Madeley played 31 League matches in various positions in 1969 as Leeds won the League championship and in 1970 flitted around the side again until Paul Reaney broke his leg shortly before the season came to a finale, with Leeds seeking to win three trophies.

Madeley duly played in Reaney's right back position and No.2 shirt as Leeds missed out on the League to Everton, the European Cup in the semi-finals to Celtic and the FA Cup in the final to Chelsea, who won after a replay.

Having deputised so well for Reaney at club level, Madeley was asked by Alf Ramsey to take Reaney's place in the England squad for that summer's World Cup in Mexico, but Madeley politely refused, saying he wanted to rest and, as a stand-in, was unlikely to kick a ball.

At this stage he had not played for his country since winning youth level caps as a teenager. In 1971, Madeley was in the side in one position for all bar one of Leeds' matches in the League, which Leeds again missed out on in the last game of the season.

He played in the No.11 shirt (left winger) as Leeds took their second Fairs Cup that summer. He made his England debut the same year. As the next season got underway, Madeley again found himself moving round the side as injuries and suspensions took hold on his team-mates and in the end he never missed a League match, though for a third year in a row Leeds failed to clinch the title on the last day.

In April 1972, left back Terry Cooper suffered an horrific broken leg so Madeley was in the No.3 shirt for the season's end and the FA Cup final, which Leeds finally won with a 1-0 win over Arsenal, duplicating their League Cup success four seasons previously.

Revie sorted the left back issue by signing ****** in the summer of 1972 and Madeley moved across to the centre of defence for much of the next season as Jack Charlton's distinguished career at Leeds wound down.

He was in that No.5 shirt as Leeds surrendered the FA Cup to Sunderland in the final; and then switched back to the left wing and the No.11 shirt for the European Cup Winners Cup final a few days later in Greece, which Leeds lost to A.C. Milan.

Leeds won the League in 1974 - Madeley missing just three matches - and even after Revie's departure that summer to take over the England job, got to their first and only European Cup final a year later, with Madeley in the No.5 shirt again.

This was his last Cup final (and Leeds' last for 21 years) - in the eight finals (nine matches) he played in, he wore seven different shirts. In these days of "player power"/agents/squabbling over image rights, etc, Jimmy Armfield in his autobiography "Right Back To The Beginning",relates a great story about Paul Madeley negotiating a new contract - "He once actually signed a new contract on what was virtually a blank piece of paper. I called him in to discuss terms and opened discussions by saying, 'OK, Paul, we'll give you so much'.

He replied that he had no intention of leaving Leeds so he might as well sign the contract and let me fill in the details. I said, 'What do you want, then, two years or three years?' He answered, 'Either way, I'll leave it to you. I just want to play for Leeds,' and that was that".

A decline in fortunes for Leeds followed, with the ageing side breaking up. Madeley stayed until 1980, enjoying a testimonial season in 1977. After retiring with 711 appearances to his name, he set up a shop in Leeds selling sports goods and worked for his family's home furnishings business.

No true 'utility' player has emerged in English football since; indeed, Madeley was arguably one of a kind for all footballing generations. Madeley won 24 England caps in total between 1971 and 1977.

You just sent that PM to switch formation and I didnt even decide if I would allow that because then everyone might ask and i dont want to keep switching formations for everyone multiple times.

Also I am already simmed through January anyway so I couldnt switch formations for several months (i write slower than i sim )

Plus you won last two matches including juggernaut Skizzonito ffs !!!

Fair enough. Just that when we came up with 433 we envisaged it as two pivots and a number 10 but the FM formation is always backwards pivot. 4231 would replicate what we wanted better I think. Somehow we're doing okay but it means Zico keeps getting dropped and Dobrin likewise having to play as a CM.

How about after the season ends?

Tbf Andreolo is your highest or second highest rated player so I cant see him getting benched.
Wow! I heard good things about him as a Monti-DLP cross-breed but that's a bit much.

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy this once and for all so I can actually recruit, pick and set tactics myself.

That's not 4-3-3, not just an FM thing. That's 4-2-3-1 with a beastly CM pair, but still 4-2-3-1.

Our biggest cheerleader, keep up the good work EAP .

Seems Czibor and Best are doing well out wide. Goals and key passes are high between them but my strikers are doing shocking. Hoping Batistuta and Baggio can sort it out between them soon!

fecking Vukas coming back from injury

That heatmap though  exactly why I wanted Trap and none of this fancy passing bollocks :annoyed:

Despite the contrasting league table positions, I was quietly confident that Trapattoni would pull this one out of the hat. Only 40% possession and just over a third of the shots as well.

Aye, can't complain as far as realistic flow and outcome is concerned. Fitting that you get to do me the same way I always beat your draft teams

Four goals though, Carrizo must have got caught high up doing an Higuita impersonation.

Only just noticed, on top of Vukas coming back from injury to start the comeback we had Brian Laudrup coming on at 45", scoring the equaliser, and getting subbed at 49"

A classic Nasazzi-Domingos duo with Kohler sandwiched between them and Monti-Lothar protecting them

Mid-November Update Part 1

Team Previews Before Matches for the first batch.

Team BeforeKeane

The interesting thing here is just how far Zidane-Giresse in CM can go. The reason they are starting is because Xavi, Xabi and Busquets are 17-18 and simply aren’t ready to start. Any modern player is basically age 18 or even 17 at the start and won’t be even close to their peak yet. So that explains why Zidane and Giresse are starting. Age. Some of the players who were prodigy at 18-19 are rated higher like Ronaldo and Garrincha. But for Xavi, he really isn’t going to come into his own for a few years. Ashley Cole is also 17 and just not ready for the big stage yet.

Team Overview

Team Adjudicator

Adjudicator has quietly held his second position in the table. The 1000-1 longshot is living the Leicester dream at the moment. His squad appears resilient. He started off relying on Paul van Himst who has 2 goals and 3 assists in 4 games. But Paul got himself injured. Kubala just raised his game and Thierry Henry slotted in and kept Adjudicator’s side rolling along. An interesting quirk of Robson is bringing on Juninho Pernambucano as a substitute in every single match so far. But no starts yet for the free kick legend. Frankly I am a bit surprised Carvalho and Cordoba are performing as well as they are.

@BeforeKeanetherewasRobson vs @ADJUDICATOR

Rinus Michels is looking to bounce back from a bad 4-1 loss to Club Sjor Bepo while Bobby Robson wants to close the gap to Skizzonito. Rinus doesn’t seem to change personnel much while it seems like Robson rotates every match. Rinus Michels’ side leads the league in Team Goals.

Team Macern

Macern’s side plays well in front of their home crowd but their form sinks on away days. Butragueño has been Macern most consistently high rated player. But he is super sub. & sub appearances with 3 goals and an assist. But with a front three of Dixie Dean, Ronaldinho and Zbigniew Boniek Emilio has to settle for super sub for now. As a key player, Sarosi has been disappointing.

Team Simonhch

Simon has an up and down run as well. 2 losses out of his first 3 matches before he captured 3 wins in a row. Leonidas is one of the best strikers in the league at the moment up there with fellow Brazilians Ademir and Ronaldo competing with Puskas and Sindelar. Tom Finney and Bobby Charlton provide verve and spontaneity. There was also a Recoba sighting! 1 goal in 1 game. With Masopust and Stojkovic in midfield, this team is one to look at over the long term.

@Macern vs @simonhch
Both these sides need a win here and at the least to get a point. Paisley's side doesn't want to fall further down the table while Capello is in a battle royale for the European slots. Capello brings in Stojkovic to partner Masopust for the first time. Paisley goes with his Captain Nausch and key player Sarosi in CM.

@Igor vs @Skizzo @Joga Bonito

Team Igor

Slow start for Igor with less matches the first month or so. But after a few draws a pair of 3-1 victories Igor is in the European slots fighting it out. While a lot of B4Keane’s players are still in La Masia, Igor has gone full oldschool. His entire starting XI played in the first half of the 20th century. Among the oldies though it’s the Austrian connection that is powering this side. Sindelar is producing the goals while Clockwork is controlling the tempo, and tallying 3 goals and 2 assists. Meazza is probably the third best popping up at crucial moments. I’ve seen some grumbling on twitter about John Charles as CB. 13 mistakes and 2 mistakes leading to goals in 7 matches has some of the stats geeks upset with the big Welshman.

w6fUTI5.jpg

Team Skizzonito

This side has a certain charm about it. The way a tank is charming. The owners might prefer a little more Nils Liedholm actio but its hard to complain about Valeriy Lobanovskyi too much. The wily Ukrainian is using Paul Madely the way he should be used, a utility king. He has his side playing incredible footy. And they are entertaining. His spine is very highly rated as Ademir-Hidegkuti-Mazzola-Beckenbauer are a fearsome foundation. But we will see if this team has real long term value value or is just fool’s gold.

FhqCfAV.jpg

@Igor vs Skizzonito

Some rotation here. Vierchowod steps into the Skizzonito defense while Roberto Ayala makes a rare appearance for the Igor side.

Preview

Lobanovskyi is great at training his players to press and then attack as a team. Meazza is having a great game here, slipping away from Beckenbauer and slotting home. Hidegkuti sprung Ademir free allowing them to equalize.

I will continue with more team overviews along with matches. Please don't ask for a league table as I won't be publishing it yet with this set of updates.

1 win away from home :(. I didn't expect the team to feature prominently in the first couple seasons to it's nice to see. Hopefully finish top 4 so the players stick around.

Cheers @oneniltothearsenal

Thanks @oneniltothearsenal ... great update and I liked the 'tank' comment on Skizz :) Also explains 'who stole my Ferrari?' - I thought some scouser had robbed him, Keizer doing great tho.

"The interesting thing here is just how far Zidane-Giresse in CM can go (tell me about it!). Some of the players who were prodigy at 18-19 are rated higher like Ronaldo and Garrincha. But for Xavi, he really isn’t going to come into his own for a few years. Ashley Cole is also 17 and just not ready for the big stage yet".(tho made Arse debut at 18?) .... as much as McGrain is fine, Cole/Irwin will be better?

Happy with a draw against @ADJUDICATOR ... two draws against decent team (@2mufc0 also) and still happy to play the long game. Got eight excellent players (who've played 3 games or less) to come in, 7 youngish, when the oldies retire in some teams ....

Great work @oneniltothearsenal ....

Excellent as usual @oneniltothearsenal

One thing that strikes me is everyone had 1 pre-season friendly while Skizzonito had 5. It must have helped hit the ground running, no?

Everyone had the same number of friendlies, I just wasn't paying that close attention to how far down I scrolled on the schedule before screenshotting everyone. Good catch though Eagle Eyes!

And yes listen to @BeforeKeanetherewasRobson you conspiracy nuts

I'll do it end of the season or if manager gets fired for the new manager.

Thanks mate. Amount of effort you're putting into this is insane - brilliant stuff.

More effort than Arsenal put in today

and thanks to you and everyone else for the kind words
