Fellaini

Well considering we got turned down by both player and club when we last made a bid - it doesn't take that much to be closer now :)

I think fellaini would be a good signing. It would give us the chance to play a 4-2-3-1, which i have long felt suits our attacking players. We have plenty of players who can operate quite comfortably in the 3 behind RVP, but we have no-one who can play next to Carrick and make us more solid. Fabregas would have been great, but we would still have had the same problem of only having Carrick who can competently defend in front of the CB's.

If anything happens to Carrick, i really don't know what type of effective midfield we could put out. This is by far our biggest weakness in my view and one that needs to be addressed quickly if we are to have any serious chance of competing on all fronts. Fellaini may not be perfect for that role, but he would surely be far more suited to it than anyone we currently have. Tbh i am not really arsed whether we sign fellaini or not, but we simply have to sign someone to help Carrick, and ideally someone who could cover for him in the event of suspension or injury.

Moyes' response that United go for world class players certainly fits my narrative as to why he had to try for Fabregas before Fellaini.

Can anyone list Fellaini's passing stats from his last 3 or 4 seasons? Whoscored only seems to show stats for the latest seasons

Not quite what you want, but I mocked up an image from 3-4 tables in an Opta article comparing the stats of 2011/12 Fellaini (DM/CM role) versus 2012/13 Fellaini (AM/2nd striker role).

Overall, attacking aside he seems to be a far better player in a central midfield role.

Thanks for that. Would be great to have the stats of the season before that (2010-2011). He played as an AM in the second half 2011-2012 so it's not very clear cut.

Keep reading the thread title wrong. There's a fine line between what it actually does say and saying "Fellaini Day".

Yes, it is. Until Thursday so the chances of us triggering it are very slim.

I reckons Moyes won't give up his search for a marquee midfielder, but I bet this lad was always going to be his second midfield signing. I would not be surprised if Baines follows too. How much and which/if any players go the other way, remains to be seen.

You never know. If we want him, would make sense to activate the clause rather than wait longer.

The problem is that United are cheapskates and would prefer to try and barter the price down two or three million pounds. I think the club are sorely out of touch with the marketplace.

Yet we paid 18m for Ashley Young. It's a little confusing sometimes when you compare it to the 26m bid for Fábregas.

It is funny because we usually seem happy to pay the English premium...but yeah, 26m for Fabregas...it's why I don't think we were ever serious about bringing him in.

Well, lets hope that isnt the case because Fellaini is very important to Everton. We wont have a bid lower than 22mil accepted if the clause elapses. (clause is at 22mil iirc)

Regarding your last comment, its something I agree to an extent with. The oil clubs and Real have skewed the market now. You either have to identify top talent before others or pay the market premium. We do the 1st well but unfortunately, our CM concerns are a bit much to wait for a young player to eventually be top class and we dont seem willing to bid the right amount.

We don't mind overpaying in the 10-20 million range. However when we start getting into the 25+ million range we tend to be more stingy. It's not necessarily a bad thing.

But our highest transfer ever is 30.5 million which is peanuts in today's market.

Bringing it here because I've been banned once for discussing in the twitter thread :D

Everton are a selling club though. They tend to sell to survive.

Yep but with the recent TV deal, they should be in a healthy state. Someone like SW would know better than me though

If we want to sign him, let's bloody do it before the game on Saturday. I'll be surprised and a little bit annoyed if we sign him in the last week of the window given the apparent inevitability of it.

At this stage of the window (given that pre-season is over), does it make THAT much difference if he signs tomorrow or in 2 weeks?... should it happen...

Why bid for him in the first place then? Either put up or zip it.

I think the club is as out of touch with the transfer market most often when I hear of a United bid it's completely unrealistic. Before the era of ultra wealthy benefactors, United were gouged with every transfer fee because we were the richest club. Now it seems that we think we're not the richest anymore so we should get a better price. Problem is we are still rich comparitively (we're not buying players from City, Chelsea, PSG, etc) so other clubs won't be open to giving us a bargain.

If his release clause expires on thursday as is being reported, it does make a considerable difference.

It doesn't make much difference in the long term but I'd say in terms of getting a good start in the league then signing him now would be better for the squad and for Moyes bedding himself in than it would be if we sign him on September 1st. If we do sign him late doors, it will seem as though we have unnecessarily hesitated given that everyone has predicted the signing since day 1 of Moyes' reign. Whether that would be the case or not, I don't know, but it doesn't fill me with great confidence moving forward in terms of the clarity and decisiveness of our strategies.

Ahhh but according to the so called wannabe experts we're loaded, and should be fairly competitive in the transfer market. We've not bettered the £30m we paid for Berbatov's services, which as you've alluded to is peanuts in the current climate. Fabregas would've probably cost north of £40m but all things considering it'd have been a good deal for us. We'd have been set for a few seasons. Yeah I can see us buying 20m+ players but not much more. Anyway, we're brilliant at signing sponsors...

I agree, I just can't fathom that if we were serious about Fabregas why we'd come in with a cheeky, almost disrespectful bid of 25 million pounds. I reckon 45m would've got him. Virtually any transfer figure below 50 million would be peanuts for a club like United. The club's consistent timidity in the market is becoming embarrassing.
