I agree, I just can't fathom that if we were serious about Fabregas why we'd come in with a cheeky, almost disrespectful bid of 25 million pounds. I reckon 45m would've got him. Virtually any transfer figure below 50 million would be peanuts for a club like United. The club's consistent timidity in the market is becoming embarrassing.

Makes me doubt whether we've actually got much cash available. Sadly , we're not relying on Fergie anymore.

It could be that our financial position is somewhat precarious and spending even a couple of million frivilously could endanger things.

Yeah, that was my biggest beef with the entire saga too. We never really tested Barca's resolve.

Yeah, that said Doc, football isn't like other businesses. Ahhh but it's not only just about winning anymore, I guess.

The post I had quoted wasn't talking about the release clause from what I saw...As you can see from his reply.

Yeah, he was referencing the footballing impact of it which is spot on. I mentioned the release clause bit because that's a big factor too.

I do agree that a bid of lets say £45m would have given Barca something to think about regarding Fabregas. We just made it easy for them to say no with a piss poor offer.

You know, if we do end up with him then going to be a bit miffed at the club. Not for signing him but, doing it so late. Then again if he is only a fall back option to all the others fair enough. Though that does open up the how is he going to feel about being a fall back - probably not too bad if he still gets to play for United at the end of the day.

I kind of agree with you. We could have had him done and dusted early and then attempted to bring in more. It's not like 1 midfield player is going to sort out the years of issues there.

That's what I am struggling to understand why we haven't done anything about Modric. If you bang on Madrid's door with £35m/£40m for Modric - a proven Premeirship player and someone who would be perfect for us- I can't see how they could turn that down.

Fabregas we should have tried £40/£45m for at least in my opinion - he is in a top bracked of midfielders and would have been worth the expense, the fact that we didn't go that high (despite unprecedented levels of noise from us about wanting him) makes me also question how much money Moyes has to work with.

We don't mind overpaying in the 10-20 million range. However when we start getting into the 25+ million range we tend to be more stingy. It's not necessarily a bad thing.

But our highest transfer ever is 30.5 million which is peanuts in today's market.
Yes I've often said this about our transfer dealings. We seem happy overpaying for players under 20 million. When it gets a above that, we become stingy. I think it is a bad thing because 5 million here or there for proven quality is nothing in the long run and certainly not to one of the biggest global brands.

I never paid much attention to Fellaini to be honest. With whatever little i saw, All I gathered was he is a player who is really good at making a nuisance of himself in the box for set-pieces and more than happy to flaw his elbows & get stuck in.
If this move to United does go through, would he bring anything more other than some muscle to the midfield?

You don't have a player like him - but frankly even if all he brought to your midfield is muscle - you need it

We won't sign him. Obviously Everton won't let him go below £24m and if we don't trigger his release clause, we'd have to pay a higher price and it'd make absolutely no sense to wait until now if we really wanted him.

With Fellaini IN, im sure we will secure the Premier league at least.

Maybe Everton will take Macheda + Bebe + a little bit of $ for the Afro man...

Love the way people just casually talk about 40-50m bids as if it's nothing.

How many players have been bought by English clubs over 40m? I can think of Torres, and that's about it!

He's the only one. Numerous players have been bought for around £25m - £30m, especially in the past 2 years, but English clubs have been reluctant to spending more than that on a player.

£30m ? Utter madness. I'd rather gamble on what we have and wait until a good player is available. At least Moyes recognizes the issue and will do everything to sign a top class midfielder, unlike the last 4 years when we missed out on several targets.

what's the difference between us having "missed out on several targets" in the last 4 years, and this summer?

Fellaini is a good player. With our current centre midfield line up, spending 30M on Fellaini is what we may have to do. To take a punt on what we already have would be suicide, in my eyes.

Suicide seems a bit of a harsh description of the decision to start the season with the same midfield that won us the league last year. Slightly neglectful, maybe. Unwise, probably. Not suicide.

The world has gone mad if Fellaini is valued at 30m!
Arsenal buying Gustavo for 14-17m is a decent price for that kind of player. 30m is outrageous!

I don't think Everton are that desperate  Apparently Macheda is going to Doncaster on loan?

Gustavo is not required at BM so his price is always going to be a lot less. MF is under contract at a club that don't wish to sell him, so his price is always going to be higher. 30M is outrageous, but we are in the market for a player so will have to pay an inflated price. Don't see the issue with it myself.

Fellaini is one signing that I think is just a matter of time. I'm sure he will be a United player come the end of the window, but whether he is what we need is yet to be seen.

I just hope that if we do sign him, our football isn't subject to countless long balls on his chest!

It's shocking that anybody thinks that he is worth anywhere near that.

I don't mind if Fellaini is one of our targets but the only thing I have an issue with is that we could have got him less than the 30m that is being touted, especially if he had a release clause of 23m.

I think its pretty obvious we don't want him, which is why nothing has happened. Not the talk of ridiculous fees or stupid swap deals.
