Fellaini

Gustavo is not required at BM so his price is always going to be a lot less. MF is under contract at a club that don't wish to sell him, so his price is always going to be higher. 30M is outrageous, but we are in the market for a player so will have to pay an inflated price. Don't see the issue with it myself.

Ok that might be the case but why aren´t trying our best to sign players who we don´t need to pay over the odds for??
In no way is Gustavo a step down from Fellaini so buying him might actually be a great piece of business.. But like Fergie said United never do it the easy way..

Id say he's worth 25m

but then if you're prepared to pay 25m why not 30m to get it done, if thats the player they want?

I think it's quite obvious that Fellaini is a backup choice for who to sign this summer and he will be on his way in the next 2 weeks should we not manage to sign anyone.

How many players have been bought by English clubs over 40m? I can think of Torres, and that's about it!

Tevez was £45m to join City, but that was paid to his third party owner rather than to any club. Aguero came close, but I think that ended at somewhere like £36m?

In terms of English teams, then it's definitely just those two clubs that don't have to "budget" at all, but the fees being paid on the continent (again by sugar daddy clubs, though Real, Barca and Bayern have paid very high fees themselves) will have an impact on the English league sooner or later, unless FFP manages to bring a calming effect on the inflation in the market, which remains to be seen.

Regardless, over £23m for Fellaini is pretty steep in any market.

He's worth what Everton paid for him £15M, possibly £18M in this overheated market. £30M is just taking the piss.

Does his clause expires today or tomorrow? It looks that we're definitely not interested on him.

It may be fairer to say that we were never interested in him as a first choice. Now we may have missed out on our first choice players, we may be interested as a back up.
Nah, Moyes said we need a defensive midfielder as well as a goal scoring one or something along the lines. Since then we've pursued Fabregas openly so Fellaini could have easily been the other one, he wasn't though so we didn't make a bid. At this point Everton are going to demand £25m+ and we won't offer anything close to that hopefully.

Martinez said this morning that the clause expired July 31st. So we're either trying to sweat them out over the fee or we had other priorities at the time. Either way, if we end up having to pay substantially more then it can't be seen as anything other than poor planning on our part.

Either that or we simply aren't in for him. Moyes would have known that clause better than anyone so I doubt he would let it pass if we were truly after Fellaini

If we end up paying £30m for Fellaini, which is the max bid we made for Fabregas, considering he could've been £23m, then I truly will be (sorry moses) baffled by this Summer.

I can't see it happening though, if Moyes was really in for him there would've been a lot more to this by now.

See I don't think our board would make this mistake that's why I think we are not looking to sign Fellaini. I could be wrong though.

I'd say it's quite clear we're not looking to bring Fellaini in given the fact we didn't act before this clause expired.

Thing is I think we are interested but we wanted that big marque signing first. I also think we believed that the buy out clause was too high and are hoping to negotiate a better deal. Buy out clauses are predominantly cash amounts, so to activate the clause we have to pay the full £22m. In terms of cash flow then it may be that we want a deal which includes add ons, which may end up costing say £26m but is paid in installments etc. I think if he signs then we'll see a deal with includes the phrase "could be worth up to..."

Well we are not signing him then, sadly he seems to be our only realistic target.

as Ive always said, I dont feel that the expiration of the release clause means anything really as Fellaini is not worth anymore than his clause.

Im pretty sure that we could get him for around £22m whenever we want - however he clearly isnt top of Moyes' shopping list or the deal would have been done already.

It seems like that but there must be a reason why we are not after him.

He's a plan C or maybe even D, or we're totally after someone else, possibly still available on the market and Moyes not even thinking about Fellaini, playing for Manchester United.

The logical reason is there... at least this is what I believe in, for now. I may be wrong.

Why do people seem so baffled that we might not want either Gustavo or Fellaini? Moyes has made clear the type of player he wants is Fabregas and neither of those players are remotely similar. It's all well and good saying "they would improve our midfield" but it's not as simple as that, they need to fit the system that Moyes wants to play, it's not just a matter of chucking some bloke next to Carrick and letting them get on with it.

Everyone laughs at Valbuena, but if Moyes signed him, everyone would turn into muppet, in a matter of milliseconds.

:p
