Fellaini

Wound anyone like to offer a comparison between Fellaini and Fletcher (a fit and in form Fletcher, that is)?
As older readers will attest I'm no fan of 9-Foul Fletcher but he's a proper DM in terms of mobility, positioning etc, Fellaini isn't.

I can confirm that Pete did nothing but moan about Fletcher's performance against Arsenal for about two years.

He was so good during that period. I'd feel a hell of a lot safer about the Carrick situation if we had that Fletcher.

Agreed, yet Fellaini has a decent nose for the goal for a big oaf. His game is not as silky as I would like for a midfielder but he's a productive big oaf nevertheless. If we were 100% sure Fletcherinho were coming back to full fitness I really wouldn't bother with Fellaini, but since it seems a safe assumption that DF will never return to that 09 form Fellaini wouldn't be a bad acquisition for the squad at all.

A shame we never went all for Martinez. Fukkin Bayern.

I reckon Fellaini can do that job better than you suggest - due to Everton's lack of forwards he was often shoved upfront (and scored quite a few goals) but more recently they had Anichebe as the battering ram and from what I saw, Fellaini was not out of place in a more defensive mid role

I reckon he would be a decent buy at around £20m - would improve your squad as well as ours.

Rood, by any chance did you pick this name out respect for Professor Harold Rood, longtime professor of international relations at Claremont McKenna College?

Why havent we completed this signing long ago? It would obviously suggest he is way down the list of targets. We could have had him in and settled a few weeks ago.

It would suggest that he probably isnt wanted.

I would suggest rather that he is not the sexy marquee signing that united want to announce as David Moyes first signing. Its probably a done deal already and if we get close to the release clause deadline without having pulled off the big signing then we'll sign him first. It's already been suggested by Moyes and Woodward that the first signing is the most important (although technically this was Varela) so it might be perceived as a lack of ambition if we go for an Everton player, rather than a Madrid or Barcelona player.

There's been nothing solid linking us to signing Fellaini whereas we know we've bid for Baines, and he isn't exactly a 'sexy marquee signing'. No chance of it being a done deal or it would have leaked out somehow by now.

I agree with Randall, it doesn't look like he's wanted by the club and most of the talk seems to be fueled by the muppets on here - whether jokingly or not.

The difference is that Fellaini has a clause in his contract which can be activated - so presumably if the player wants the move (which I assume he would) it would be a fairly straightforward affair. Baines and the other targets require a fee to be agreed first which clearly causes a lot more difficulty. Terms could be agreed with the player already.

I obviously have no idea whether Moyes wants him - but it could be the case that he wants to land a marquee signing first to appease the fans.

I hope we do get him, although not as our sole midfield buy. I see the point about marquee signings and setting a tone, there's a lot of snobbery in the football world, if we were signing a player of the same quality from abroad people might see it as a good buy, Fellaini's getting a lot of stick off some people on the basis that 'he plays for Everton and we're better than Everton so he's obviously not United level', even though the same people complained about Everton outplaying us in midfield when we played them last season.

Anyway, even if he wasn't a starter (which I think realistically he'd be challenging for if we didn't sign someone else this Summer), tactically speaking he'd be very useful for when we need some steel in midfield. Previously when we needed a presence in there we've resorted to shoe-horning Jones in and we all know how much the caf loved that.

£22 million would make Fellaini our 6th most expensive ever and a marquee signing. We havent done it yet because we're clearly looking for more value and/or a different type of midfielder

See in my dreams (admittedly fueled by Moyes claiming we had a macca budget) I'm still hoping for another 2007 Summer where we'll sign basically everyone regardless of cost. Fellaini at £22m is quite reasonable when you consider that Anderson was signed for ~£20m with one European season behind him, given the current market. Would you have counted Ando and Nani as marquee signings in 2007. given that we signed Tevez about a month later? Initially opposition fans would have a go if he was our first big Summer signing, but a) who cares about them? and b) if we signed someone better a few weeks later no-one'd give a shit who our first signing of the Summer was.

As well as a lot of moaning on here.

In fairness, it doesn't say much. I'd suspect any interest in Fellaini would be because other deals have failed. And if Moyes is to be belived, Fabregas' deal is ongoing.

And why would he lie?

Indeed, but i think it would be fairly stupid to lie to the fans of the club you've just taken over. The reading of it says to me that people have enquired/made bids that have fallen very short of our value.

There's no need to 'confirm' interest in Fellaini I suppose as we can pretty much sign him at will up until next week. The Baines situation is odd though. Unless it's Martinez' way of saying that our £12m was so short of their valuation that they don't even consider it as firm interest. It's really difficult to believe anything anybody says nowadays.

Err... No!

Drats! I thought, just perhaps, that I had stumbled across another student of this great teacher, a man who served as a naval operator under Patton and later wrote Kingdoms of the Blind: How the Great Democracies Have Resumed the Follies That So Nearly Cost Them Their Life (1980).

Check him out.

We better get a move on,according to Metro we only have seven days to trigger his release clause.
The current rumour is we are waiting for it to expire on 31st July, so that we can negotiate for a lower price. For Moyes is said to believe that 23m for a player unproven at the biggest clubs is too high for Fellaini.

If we sign him, he'll obviously have his good games for us.

Heck, Massimo Taibi was MOTM in his debut. William Prunier's debut was magnificent. Djemba-Djemba bossed Bolton.

Huh? Surely we could negotiate for a lower price at any time? The clause is there to effectively bypass negotiations with the club as I understand how clauses work.

Let's get him signed!

That's silly, we could negotiate at any point, release clauses don't instantly require you to pay the full price or go away.
