Fellaini

Would like to get this wrapped up soon, if we're interested. Seems the only viable option really, like it or not.

If we sign him and Baines, I'm optimistic about the new season.

Watching the pre-season games so far, we don't lack the creativity up-front; so many young upcoming good players we have there. So I think a bit of steel in CM is much needed; with neither Cleverley, Anderson, or Jones are capable providing one.

Ideally Jones should be able to provide that but he has zero positional sense when playing in midfield, not his fault because he is a defender.

 @ more and more people warming to this deal he longer the Summer goes on with no midfield addition.

I think he's actually the best midfielder we could get right now. He's not ideal but he has PL experience, is strong, decent on the ball, tough and available. We're not going to sign Fabregas it seems, Gundogan and Vidal are far fetched ideas and we probably don't know about the existence of young promising midfielders around Spain, Germany etc. so Fellaini does seem like a good idea.

So is this the thread where the party's happening?

I'd be pleased if we sign him.

That's a fecking depressing thought considering how many young quality midfielders we missed out on over the years.

We'll just never sort out central midfield... once again, it looks like we're just going to have to try and paper over the cracks with 1) playing players out of position or maybe 2) getting in mediocre players as a short-term "solution".

It baffles me how we can sign top quality defenders and forwards from nowhere yet seem completely incapable of identifying good midfielders who have been transfered for relatively low fees in the past 2-3 years - Gundogan, Vidal, Moutinho, Witsel, Verratti etc. All were known and proved their worth before transfers.

I agree we need steel, but we also need a playmaker one like the one's we've been apparently chasing. Two midfielders would be ideal. However, neither of those fit Fellaini IMO. He's not very good defensively, and he doesn't necessarily add steel in CM. If we want defensive steel, we should go for Luis Gustavo. He is much better then Fellaini and not as dirty. Fellaini isn't afraid of going into tackles sure, but he does it in a dirty way, always leading with his elbow and just asking to get sent off. I think a partnership of Cleverley and Carrick, or Anderson and Carrick is better then what Fellaini and Carrick could be, but that is just my opinion of course.
If we do end up getting him, and I hope we don't, it will only be as a last resort option.

Didn't Zenit buy him for around 40 million? Hardly a low fee

Stopped reading there.

Stopped reading there.

He's definitely not as good as what most people think. Admittedly he's better then Cleverley or our midfield options defensively, but people automatically assume he'll add a lot of 'steel' to our midfield because he's a big strong lad, which isn't necessarily true.

Scores almost a perfect one goal every six games for club and country.

Belg - 7 in 42 = 1/6
Clubs 43 in 257 = 1/6 with a game to spare.

That's a fairly serious record. Must look at assists.

No, people think he's going to add a lot of steel to our midfield because they have watched him play and formed an opinion based on the fact that he's good defensively, he covers a HUGE amount of ground, if fast and good in the tackle and in the air.

I don't get what's the negativity towards him over here. He's clearly a good player and will improve our midfield with his own attributes that we currently do not have. He will kick the feck out of Hazard, Silva, Navas and Toure

I know player ratings are very hard to qualify, but he's someone playing with Everton who has an average rating in the high 7's over a season. Anyone who actually watched enough of him will tell you that he's an excellent footballer who is one of the best midfielders in our League.

I think he'd be a good signing and he would be very good next to Carrick.

Agreed.

Fellaini is nowhere near the all world XI third team, but he's proven himself to be effective in the English prem.

What I'm sensing is disappointment that we will not be ale to build a squad that can compete with Bayern or Barcelona, but my advice to caftard nation is to get over it. Let's just focus on the league trophy and a dominant performance in group play in the CL and putting in a respectable showing when we meet either of those two, who will defeat us.

The upside of settling for Fellaini, since this will have to be a hunt for a silver lining, is that he's in no position to command an automatic starting role. That's actually huge, and I'm not just referring to his hair. He can come in when needed and perhaps he'll play himself into an automatic starter.

My thoughts are now turning to Baines and whether he makes any sense. I can see both sides of the argument and I'm still to sure where I come out. My gut tells me Fabio is capable of great things, but wo knows?

That's the spirit...? And does a point come when we just give up on competing with City and Chelsea as well, the way Arsenal and Liverpool did? Where does it end?

The underlying assumption of my previous post is that we would shred our competition in the league, as we did last season. I expect we will actually do just that.

I don't know if you've been following Bayern lately, but they just bagged a treble and have since strengthened their squad. They're suddenly in the conversation for "greatest squad of all time". That may be premature, but the point still holds that they'll go on a rampage this season. I don't see how we could match them in talent, athleticism or experience unless we brought in Ronaldo, which does not appear to be in the cards.

As for Barcelona, they're stacked too and should coast to the CL semifinals.

I'm not aware of anyone here who suggests we will coast to the CL semifinals this season.

We should have done last year only for a cnutish decision and I'm sure we would have put up a better fight than Real did if we had gotten there. I don't think it's hard to see us progressing that for this year. Only once in recent times have we not got out of the group stage and after that it's only a case of winning two ties to get to the semi. Not beyond the bounds of reality TBH. The Germans were spectacular in their semi's this year but that will be hard to pull off two years on the bounce so I wouldn't right the rest of Europe off yet.

This compete with Barcelona and Bayern shit is pissing me off. Both of these teams have got to the standard they have by virtue of buying youngish players who are good but not world class, their youth systems, and steadily introducing a system over a few years. We aren't going to be at their level by just signing 1 or 2 world class players.

Yeah but Benfica got him for €8m the year before when we were rumoured to be interested. Likewise Moutinho signed for Porto at €11m, I didn't mean the €30m fee that Monaco paid for him.

If you think the fee's we would have paid at those times would have been 8 and 11 then you are delusional.
