Fellaini

You could argue that we tried to buy Fabregas (our 1st choice) with some very limp and unrealistic bids at a stupid time after Thiago was sold (knowing that the bid would fail). This would then look to the fans as though they're trying to bring in top quality players, while all along the realistic target has been fecking Fellaini. Therefore aiding the sales of Season Tickets and making Manchester United seem like they're after the very best talent.

I hope this twitter bullshit is bollocks because i'm going to be extremely under whelmed if we sign this hairy twat. Bah fecking humbug!

Really? You actually believe that? How any rational person can genuinely believe that the club would behave like that is beyond me. Or that a Marquee signing would make any difference....

Oh look United have signed Fabregas!!! I now want a season ticket!!!

Fellaini is Everton best player, arguably along with Baines, great midfielder who can play further up, is great in the air, can tackle and has very good (and underrated) passing. Playing alongside Carrick will do wonders for us. IMO, is an improvement from Cleverley who is not a finished article yet. He's no Schweinsteiger, but has a lot of room for improvement. And is a Belgium international, where he is also a standout player.

I'm happy, and hoping for one more signing.

Difficult to prove, but I do know people who have been to Old Trafford this year to watch RVP. So I think the point has merit. Whether it applies to Season Tickets is a different matter as I don't have that data available.

I'm going to wait till the end of the window before I start assessing our Summer. But the Fabregas Saga was absurd.

Fellaini with a decent haircut:

Sorry - he still looks like he's been coloured-in with a felt tip.

Wayne's hair looks more authentic than that.

Well finally. That's a good definition. I'm very unconvinced by Fellaini's positional discipline/awareness and without that the other three aren't worth much, as we've seen with Alan Smith. I'm not saying Fellaini is at Smith's level as a midfielder, he's clearly far better than that but I'm still not sure that's enough.

We'll see how he does, if a deal is done I suppose. What I find odd about this thread is that a lot of people seem sure that he won't be a good enough addition.

Over the last couple of years he's been linked with Chelsea, Arsenal, United and Real Madrid. He's performed well for Everton in a side punching well above their weight.

I tend to assume that pros in the game, a lot of whom seem to rate Fellaini, and those at the club who make these decisions know more than me in terms of whether a player has what it takes at the top level - so to a degree I'm happy to leave it to the club to decide what players are capable, and having watched him I'm of that opinion that he is so I'd personally be happy if a deal is done.

In the past there's been criticism of United not moving for players who, after the event, have been a success in stepping up a level. So if we do bring a player in from lower down the league I find it bizzare that people are now so quick to pass judgment before a deal is even done.

What I dont get is that a lot of the criticism is essentially because he's been happy to do a job for his manager that he seemingly didnt prefer to do and play out of position. Lets be clear, he would walk into Everton's midfield - they didnt put him upfront because he couldnt do the midfield job - it was because they had nobody else to lead the line. The fact that he wasnt half bad at it suggests not only that he's a decent footballer, but also has a good attitude. That's a positivbe for me.

You could also say that no pro in the game wanted to pay Fellaini's release clause so he's hardly a coveted item. Who he's been linked to is irrelevant, journalists print a lot of shite.

I'll also leave it to the club to decide - what choice do I have anyway? But we're all entitled to our opinions about him all the same. I'm not sure he won't be a good addition. I do think he won't be but I'm not sure and I hope I'm wrong.

God, this phrase should be banned, really. So many words for saying nothing.

what in particular says nothing? in fact i think its few words to say alot.

proven premier league player = someone who has shown consistently that he can perform in this league and there is no risk associated in terms of settling in or adapting to life in england, a huge factor in any transfer that may affect lots of other touted targets.

add steel to the midfield is self explanatory really, hes a player unlike carrick, cleverley and anderson who by all accounts relies alot on the physical aspects of his game. every time he played against united he struck me as mentally tough too in that he never seemed overawed...."steely personality" welcome to the wonderful world of the english language.

now since youre on phrase banning patrol maybe go somewhere it would actually be useful like the posts about "embarrassment", "inexperienced in the market" and "osman coming soon lol." precious

Steel means nothing. Seriously. Say he's a good tackler or that he's a big fecker who likes to foul people or that he's tactically disciplined or that he's got good positioning and defensive awareness. 'Steel' is just... nothing, it's a generic word that has no real substance to it.

And being 'Premiership proven' is so hugely, appallingly overrated. Contrary to popular myths, it's very rare that someone excels in a similarly strong league and then fails miserably because he can't adapt to the Premier League. Usually there are a variety of reasons why someone cannot perform according to expectations and the nature of the league itself is rarely the most important of these reasons.

haha i should have read this before i replied above, you pretentious, and ill informed, twat.

If he decides to stay too then we are fooked...this got the hallmarks of deadline deal!

Although it may come across as arrogant to say it, I highly doubt that Fellaini would choose to stay at Everton if he's aware that we're seriously interested in bringing him here. It's obviously a massive step up.

yeah, I don't think it's disrespectful to Everton to say there's a big difference from Fabregas deciding to stay in Barcalona and someone from Belgium wanting to stay with Everton. Even a lifelong Toffee didn't want to stay there when push came to shove and the offer came in from a big side.

I'd be surprised if Everton let that happen... they'll surely need to use the money replace him (and will need time to do so...) otherwise they'll be pretty fecked with the size of their current squad.

I have a feeling it'll be done by the weekend.

Not sure Everton will really need that much time to replace him. McCarthy is the logical replacement and I don't think that deal will take too long once Everton make a proper move for him.

Unless they don't think McCarthy is good enough.

I'd be pretty sure they would think McCarthy is good enough as a) most people who've watched him play would say he's good enough for Everton, b) Martinez is his former manager and has constantly talked him up as a potential top class player and c) they've already had a bid turned down (reportedly).

im not going to derail the thread with a nonsense war of words, your original post was incredibly sweeping and precious and you followed it uo with a pretentious one and now this despite my actual reasoned initial reply. any more questions please refer to my first response to you and allow the thread to car on.

Martinez actually did say that United's bid turned their heads (Fellaini and Baines) and that they're unsettled now, and he was a bit angry about it.

I also read somewhere that Fellaini did tell Everton that he wants to leave for United.. I think it's just a matter of getting the most out of it for Everton, and trying to find a replacement before the deadline..

I had the deal as 50/50 yesterday, today I'm upgrading it to 70/30. :D

Is there actually any quotes from Martinez which say this? I can't find them, i can only find papers putting this as headlines but no actual quote from Martinez.

EDIT: In his press conference he said that players can have their heads turned but he didn't directly say that Fellaini/Baines have.

Why so? Because of a few twitters saying deal already agreed?

This is the original quote I think:
He told Everton's official website: "I know we are going to be talking about the transfer window but that's not what we are focusing on now."

Asked about the transfer window unsettling players at his stage of the season, Martinez said: "It happens up and down the country and it is a global concern in football. I think the football authorities need to look into it and not put the players, the fans and the league in this situation.

"You are going to get people's minds turned in every dressing room in the country, but that's what the laws in the game are forcing us to do.

"It's not a great situation so that's why we want to focus on the games."
Mentioned in many sources, for example:

http://www.independent.ie/sport/rob...t-made-a-bid-for-james-mccarthy-29531014.html

Yeah, so he hasn't actually said that Fellaini/Baines have become unsettled. Plus he said that they were both acting professionally and working hard

I thought this was the most on transfer in history around 10pm last night? Page 135 in this thread, there's a whole queue of people acting like we'd already signed him.

I'll be honest, I've not been too happy over the talk that we might sign him, as I don't think he's one of the midfielders we should be looking at. If he does come though, I'll be delighted if he proves me wrong.

Yeah, which is why he "hinted" that they're unsettled, and didn't "say it outright".. By the way, the context of the quote was about Fellaini and Baines.. The question right before these was:
Asked if there had been a new offer from United, he replied: "No, no other news."
So they were talking about the two specifically.

As I said, I think it's just a matter of not showing weakness at the moment, and trying to get the most out of the deal for them, but may be there is something to spot in between the lines (especially if you want Fellaini to join us :D )..
