Fellaini

This has been true (and I've been saying it) for about five years. But Fellaini isn't a DM at all. As it stands we do at least have Jones as a capable defensive midfielder, so it's not like it was a couple of years ago when we'd probably have fallen apart the moment Carrick got a knock.

Fellaini started as a d/m though and can play the role, a lot better than Jones can. I think it was 3 seasons ago he was performing well there. My issue though is that as he's not played there for the last 2 seasons that he's not developed there at all and not been tested there on a CL level. When you look at someone like Song who was much more established there, going for 15m then you think Fellaini is overpriced regardless of what they paid for him.

Martinez has been waxing lyrical about Utd not bidding for Fellaini for about 2 weeks. Now Everton release news of a bid.

They want to cash in, they're just hoping someone else comes in and drives the price up.

But the thing is we haven't shown any signs of needing to sell anyone. I'm really hoping we play hardball ala Lescott.

I'm sure that most at Everton were already prepared for Fellaini to move on and had plans on how to replace him once you got the money in. It's been fairly telegraphed that the player wants to move on this year and revealing the bid appears to be your way of trying to drum up interest to get close to what you think he's worth- because noone was interested in paying the £23.5 million before..

Baines is an interesting one, he seems to kind of guy who's happy where he is, and Everton are clearly happy to keep him so I can see us paying over the odds to get him if Moyes is serious about the transfer. From our perspective, we got RvP.. the best striker in the world for an initial £18m (albeit because he was in the final year of his contract and forced the move), paying close to that for a left back seems a bit crazy

How is Fellaini rated by the Everton fans....i've read a few reports stating they would be happy for him to leave but would rather keep Baines?

Revealing the bid to me is a way of saying "We aren't going to be fecked around here, cough up" or that the unsettling tactic clearly hasn't worked as no player is trying to force a move through. I wouldn't read everything you hear in the papers tbh. Fellaini is more than happy to stay at the club if we decided to keep him, as he hasn't tried to get out at all.

Moyes had to convince him to stay last season when Chelsea were sniffing around.

It's easier to find a CM than a LB to be fair. It's difficult though, Our attack would be greatly weakened by Baines leaving but so would our defensive game if Fellaini left.

Therefore he was happy to stay at the club and didn't try to force a move...

If he wasn't happy he would have refused, and asked to be sold.

It's insulting to bid 12m when we flat out rejected it before hand. Then to only bid 16m for a player we bought for 15m, who is twice the player he was when he came here, is insulting.

We were never going to accept this, and quite rightly the club has been angered by it. Cheap tactics from what I thought was a classy club.
What's insulting about it? Did the offer come by post in an envelope along with a picture of Woodward pissing on your grandmothers grave?

Its a pretty tame insult otherwise. Football and hyperbole, eh? Its embarrassing.

Actually, what I WOULD do if I was Everton is set a price for Fellaini just above his recently expired buyout clause. "You can have him if you're willing to prove we've outsmarted you" type thing.

Would make Woodward look like an absolute imbecile if United went for it.

All depends how much Everton need to sell. I'm guessing they could afford to keep Fellaini and be fairly certain they'll still get a good fee for him if/when needed.

Insulting - Speak to or treat with disrespect or scornful abuse.

Bolded is key. This is a manager who put the 23m clause into Fellainis contract so he obviously knew that we weren't going to sell him for a fee of 16m.
This is a manager who if a club came in for Baines with a 12m offer he would tell you that they were being an arse and to go elsewhere. This is a manager who was outraged by Citys pursuit of Lescott which this could turn out becoming like. This is a manager who bid 12m for a player, was rejected, and then thought he would come in with the exact same offer a month later as if we would change our mind.

It just seems like a tactic to unsettle the players and force our hand, which is disrespectful in my view.

I wouldn't be surprised if we accepted something like 20m initial fee with clauses.

Really pleased the club are bidding for the two.....I think they will be excellent additions. I don't think any unsettling tactics will work personally, they are both honest pros who will not kick up a stink in public. I think to actually snag both of them the offer will need to increase considerably to around the £40 million mark, they are easily worth that and probably more. Everton will rightly play hardball, particularly with Baines who is so important to them. After United taking their manager I doubt Kenwright will be in any position to bend over for.....again rightly so. I just hope the club have not left this all too late, as judging by the pace of our negotiations so far this summer everything has been a bit pedestrian.

Some of the shit on here about Fellaini's ability is actually pissing me off now. People criticise him but their words indicate they have never actually watched the guy play football. And he can play, very well. All this whinging about "don't want him to take Cleverley's place" makes me cringe. Just because Tom is an academy graduate does not mean he is entitled to his place, he owes United not the other way around. If the big fella comes in it allows some real competition...something we have lacked in the engine room for years. Whoever plays well will keep their place and competition is essential for development, look at Jonny Evans as a prime example.

It would be exactly that, except that the bids seem to have been leaked by Everton, not United, so it doesn't quite add up that way.

In any case, this is how these things always work. There's always anger from the club being targetted unless they receive some extortionately over the top bid.

We're not Manchester City, we have a budget, so we're not going to come in looking to pay more than we might need to just to avoid angering anyone...And when City signed one of your players for an extortionate fee, everyone including Moyes still got angry about it anyway!

I would think the players already are unsettled, otherwise you wouldn't be making noises about being angry to the media. Of course, all that doesn't necessarily mean you have to sell them for a non extortionate price. If I was an Everton fan, I'd probably be the same as you in wanting the club to play hardball or just not sell.

To me, the leak by us could be saying "Look, the players aren't unsettled so you're going to have to pay more as they won't leave without a much better bid".

Woodwoodwood and Moyes are probably gonna delay the second bid for a week or so. This summer has been a complete farce transfer wise.

I definitely want him to take Cleverley's place. Academy or not, he is not good enough for a regular starting place. Anybody who thinks he is has probably been on the Buckfast for too long.

I totally agree with you, Nev is just being an arse as usual. The problem is Moyes owes Manchester United now, he cannot let his feelings for Everton get in the way of his own pursuit of success. It was obvious this bid was coming, it's been an open secret the manager wants both players. Waiting for the release clause to expire allows United to bid jointly for both rather than dealing with them seperately.

It's double standards mate and I don't feel comfortable with it, but football is cut-throat. I just hope that you get a good price for one or both of them and I'm sure that you will, you are under no obligation to sell of course. I get the feeling Baines in particular would not openly agitate for a move?

I am sure there has been plenty going on behind the scenes, the brinkmanship is just beginning publically, to help fans like yourself get their heads around the fact they could be leaving. Moyes has already said that we "are in" for several players, I am sure we have not been resting on our laurels.

I doubt David Moyes is telling Woodward how much to bid. Apart from identifying the players he wants I don't really see what Moyes has done wrong here.

We should abandon Baines and go for Fellaini; I don't think Martinez would be too fussed if he was getting to spend the money.

Woodwoodwood and Moyes are probably gonna delay the second bid for a week or so. This summer has been a complete farce transfer wise.

This is what has annoyed me most this summer. Everton's valuation (like Barcelona's) of the player isn't just going to change next week or the week after. We'll no roughly how much they will be looking for both players so why waste another week or two fannying about?

Given the players Utd have let go to Everton on the cheap I'm not sure they have much cause to complain about the club in transfer dealings.

I definitely want him to take Cleverley's place. Academy or not, he is not good enough for a regular starting place. Anybody who thinks he is has probably been on the Buckfast for too long.

Fellaini as a direct replacement for Cleverley implies a sea-change in our entire style of football, and not one I would be happy with. I certainly think that he would bring us something we lack, but I would see him as another option in midfield - Cleverley should still have a big future at the club.

Its not insulting, at all. Or disrespectful. £12m for a 28/29 year old left back is a reasonable fee. Evra cost half that at a younger age. And Fellaini clearly isn't worth the buy-out clause amount, as shown by the fact that not one single club triggered it. Everton are well within their rights to reject any bid for one (or two) of their players, but this insulting, disrespectful talk is, quite bluntly, bollocks.

Come on....that is a poor argument and you know it.
One club have been generous to the other. To whine about Utd is a little classless. I'm not saying they should sell important players cheap, nobody should do that.

The bid for Fellaini is supposedly £16m and Baines £12m.

I don't really see what the aim is here. Neither seem the type to go on strike and the offer is derisory really. Especially when you've already bid £12m for Baines and had it rejected. It'd take £40m to even make them interested.

feck off, I'm not being an arse. Well, maybe I am, but not with my view that it isn't insulting. What's insulting about a substantial bid for two players? They'd make a profit on Baines, who isn't worth £12mil, and Fellaini obviously isn't worth the fee on the buy-out clause, or someone would have triggered it as I've said, if Everton want to reject the bid then by all means, that's their prerogative, but insulting? Disrespectful? Offensive? Give me a break.

£12m is a reasonable fee but it seems a little bit of a WUM if you bid the same fee twice.

Taking into account our last few bids and the time to prepare and submit, it takes us on average of 2 weeks to submit a bid....so i expect our next bid will be made on 3 September.
