Fellaini (on his way) out? | Duncan Castles: Fellaini agrees new two year deal

How do we know other clubs haven't made him offers though? If he was to leave United on a free do you seriously think no club would have him? Obviously the offers he received from other clubs don't match to his unrealistic opinion of himself as a footballer.
Think they have but the money was a problem.

Apparently we had given him an year extension(which he had rejected) and the rumor is that he is close to agreeing a two year deal now, which means that the contract is different to the one which was given before.

Ok. So it's not a big deal then as people are making out.

Quick one, why is everyone saying we have caved to his demands?

Sounds very much like we have had an offer on the table for sometime and he's finally agreed it. Don't see any movement from United, just Fellaini.

Agreed. An offer has been extended a while now and in the retained/released lists that were on PremierLeague.com a couple of weeks ago never lists Fellaini as a free transfer/released player. Fellaini has had an offer from the club for quite some time. The narrative of the club "caving" to his demands is exaggerated. Whether the compromise was an additional year or change in wages, it doesn't matter much. What matters is it looks like Fellaini is going to be part of the squad again, we'll all have to tolerate his good, bad and ugly and go through another transfer debate in 12 months time.

Well I hope we have a couple of exciting signings up our sleeve. Otherwise it is Fred, who I have hopes for, a kid, who is likely another backup for the time being and Fellaini. We are not going to challenge City with that.

It's true that United's only option to replace Fellaini would be spending £100m on Milinkovic-Savic.

However people are forgetting that the shirt sales from that signing will easily pay the cost of the transfer fee.

You don't need 60m to replace Fellaini, he was out most of last season and wasn't missed.
And for 60m we would get a player who is far, far better than Fellaini. Matic cost 40m only for heaven's sake.

Club really is going absolutely nowhere. 5 years and everyone involved still has no clue. Hopefully it's the last season of Ed and Mou.

If this means we won't be signing one more midfielder, then this is extremely frustrating news.

I know it is way too early in the window but I have a feeling that we won't be able to fill our gaps this window.

Listen, if we sign Bale.....and a great full back? We won't be in bad shape to be honest but we don't know yet so have patience. If we do nothing else? I'd be pissed but I think people are being narrow minded about this. We really have to wait and see before reacting prematurely.

I've defended Fellaini more than most, but I'm pretty gutted hearing this. Nothing against his effectiveness as a player. The problem is unfairly or not is he symbolises the post-Fergie era and a lot of the despair that has come with that.

Letting him go and signing Fred felt like a step towards something more energetic, vibrant, athletic - keeping him feels like we're still treading water

This is most probably the case. We obviously need a CB, LB & RW more than a second CM.
Those three signing alone will take 150-200 million, which added to the 65 we have already spent in anything but the club reverting skint mode.

I agree however....

United tend to go up and down, with spending sprees followed/preceded by underwhelming ones. The 1989 spending spree was preceded and succeeded by rather underwhelming transfer windows (in terms of fees not players). Same can be said about the spectacular 1998 spending spree (Teddy and Berg the year before, Bosnich, Taibi, Silvestre, Djordic and Fortune the year after) and the 2007 spending spree (we only signed Carrick in 2006 and we signed Berbatov and a couple of youths on undiclosed fees 2008). Sometimes we have two good years followed/succeeded by a meah year (2001-2002 followed by 2003 were we only got an 18 year old Ronaldo and Kleberson) or the 2004-2005 which was followed by the 2006. I repeat Im referring to fees not players.

This trend remains consistent after SAF left. Moyes had an underwhelming year with United signing just Fellaini and Mata, which was followed by a great year transfer wise (Di Maria, Herrera, Shaw, Blind) and then followed by an underwhelming transfer window with only Martial of note. Under Mou we had two great transfer windows. Which suggest this summer we might tighten a bit the belt.

For me, this isn't even a case of not signing one more midfielder, it's that this seemingly says we have nothing coming through the system that is a better option than a long ball up the pitch....

Even if we weren't going to sign another midfielder, I'd rather Pereira got a chance as a squad player (since Fellaini is not starting XI anyway) to prove himself.

I do not see a point in this renewal, we've know his level for 5 years now and nothing's gonna change.

I still maintain some hope it's fake news.

This is on Jose, not Woody, he makes the decisions on who stays and who goes.

Woodward has to take some of the blame - he's supposed to be overseeing the running of the club. We need a good DOF we've needed one since SAF retired. Woodward doesn't have a plan and that's my issue with him.

Genuinely horrible news. Will stop us getting a better replacement in. Gutted.

The Caf isn't half full of drama queens. Don't know how they function on a daily basis.

From one end of the hair spectrum to the other

Fellaini’s decision to remain at the club he joined from Everton for a fee of £27.5million in 2013 will allow United to redirect some of this summer’s transfer budget to alternative targets.

If that happens, ffs the meltdown will be epic. I won't even be able to blame anyone.

I've said all along that he will probably re-sign with us.
The meltdown, if it were to happen, will be epic and hilarious.

It's the main positive we can take from him resigning. Potentially.
