Favourite United Player Who Wasn't That Good

That's a good one that really fits the criteria. He had a great striking technique, but unfortunately not much else. Somehow he barely scored a goal after leaving Man Utd.

I just discovered that
he scored 10 goals in 60 appearances for Man Utd, which was a decent return for a midfielder

Left United at the age of 24

but somehow only able to score 2 more career goals in his 120+ games (including playing in Championship and League Two) before his retirement at 34.

Quite an interesting fact

Agreed. Diego was a near-colossus after he left Old Trafford. He actually wasn't poor for us, but the goals just didn't come for him in a red shirt.

Yes, I remember re-watching those games in 2002 or 2003, his general plays were quite good indeed, just somehow failed to manage to score often

Antonio Valencia- I thought he was a really good full back when LvG/Jose decided to play him there but sadly others did not. Absolutely fantastic workrate, great strength, great pace and could never fault his attitude. Better than quite a few of the other fullbacks we've had over the last 12 years.
In that European Super Cup against Real, I actually was looking forward to see how he would fare against Marcelo. He was that good in Mourinho’s 1st season.

Anderson - he's been mentioned a few times already but with good reason. I remember the excitement when him and Nani signed, that's proper FM stuff signing two wonder kids from the Portuguese league. Loved his positivity, always making forward runs and passes. Thought it was only a matter of time he'd put it all together and show it on a consistent basis. Instead he was plagued by injuries, in and out of the team and blew hot and cold. Every year I thought this will be Anderson's year and every year it was not. Last imagine I have of him in my mind is hitting the oxygen mask on the sideline after getting subbed out of some Brazilian game.

Obertan - another I got caught up in a bit of hype at the time of his signing, watching a few highlight videos that made him look Henry-esque. He showed a couple of glimpses, I can remember a good run to score/set up a goal. Other than that, yeah he was rubbish wasn't he?

Veron - not sure if this counts because he was clearly a great player just not for us. Another I was so excited by when we signed I rushed out to get his name and number on my shirt (I was a kid at the time but it helped his name was short and it was only one number). Showed up a couple of times here and there but by and large it was a very disappointing spell, thankfully Chelsea came along to give us some money for him at least.

Davide Petrucci - not based on a lot only a bit of excitement when we signed him, I think he was Roma or Italy youth team captain. Never really actually seen much of his playing but the fact the height of his career after us seems to have been a spell in Turkey before moving to Serie B then C suggests he maybe just wasn't that good.

O'Shea and McTominay are the first ones I think of.
I see Park mentioned, but he was quite good, wasn't he?

I know he was on loan but I wished Radamel Falcao was the player we saw at Atletico. By the time he came here he was finished.

Daley Blind i thought was a great little player, good on the ball , versatile, great attitude, never went toxic

Alan Smith. Idolized him as a kid. Loved the passion and the slide tackles.

Also Veron. My two favorite players growing up but realistically neither were that good for us

Quinton Fortune, Forlan and Felleini
Ahh such blast from the past. Very fond of him. Reliable no matter where you start him. Jeez what a solid 6/10 player every time he started, if at all he starts that is. There is no such thing as lacking match practice bs with him and O'shea.

Heinze
Djemba-Djemba
Manucho
Possebon
Mkhitaryan
Bebe
I hated evra because i just loved heinze, up until those Liverpool comments. SAF trully can pick players right left and center from anywhere and they would be 7/10 and then he can decide 7/10 is not good enough and go get himself an evra instead. Unreal manager.

Depends what we mean by not that good.

I was a big admirer of Anderson and Martial as far as pure natural talent especially the latter. If we’re going for underrated players during the SAF like O'Shea etc they all won plenty and have cemented their place in our history. If we’re referring to the relatively unsuccessful SAF I’d say Blind was a very good all round footballer who would’ve won more plaudits in a better run system I guess. Herrera was a good footballer who also would have shone in a better system. But there’s many that can be said for.

I’m just a bit all over the place on this question as I don’t quite get it.

Kagawa.
Wanted so bad him to make it at United. Intelligent and hard working #10, what's there not to like.

Bailly and Rojo high on the list too.

Kagawa was signed to play off of Rooney. Rooney has just had an excellent couple of seasons outright leading the line.

Then late that summer RVP happened and there just wasn’t a place for Shinji.

Kleberson. I was so excited we signed a Brazilian World Cup winner!

Alan Smith lies smack dab in the middle of that intersection (loved by fans, not very good).

Does Park qualify? He was excellent at his role. We could use an energizer bunny like him currently.

Does Darren fletcher count? Loved his passion, energy and passing. But doesn’t really stick out as one of United’s top talents.

Unfortunately it was the very weird love he got despite being a bit crap that landed him on my irrational hatred list.

Same here. Every international Brea he would do an interview about how much he loved the club and people lapped it up.

Anyway my choice is veron. Probably my most hyped signing we have ever made and I loved him.

Anyone who says Fletcher can get in the bin. Thank you!

…he was detestable. ;)

Rafael and it's not even close.

Also, my first ever "favourite" player as a child was Mark Robins. So him.

Alan Smith. Idolized him as a kid. Loved the passion and the slide tackles.

Also Veron. My two favorite players growing up but realistically neither were that good for us
Smith for me too, did a job for us when we were really struggling.

Neil Webb.... I mean he was pretty good but not good enough to be anyone's favourite player, don't know why when I was a kid he was my fav but he was

As for my pick, I would probably go with Berbatov or Forlan and I mean it in the sense of them not being very good for us, because they were both ridiculously gifted players and probably the best on their teams both before and after United.
Berba was PL top scorer with us. He was pretty good IMO.

As for my favorite player who wants that good?

Blind and Fellaini for sure.

You're misremembering the chain of events. Fergie had spent all summer planning for Van Persie's arrival. I actually think the plan was to play Kagawa in a midfield 2, slightly further forward than Carrick.

Also Rooney hadn't been leading the line as a number 9 for a couple of years by then. From the start of 2010-11 onwards, he was playing as the number 10 behind Chicharito.

This is the way I remember it as well. Kagawa was a skillful player but just not good enough for the PL, or at least for our style. He'd have had better luck at Arsenal.

Blind and Fellaini for sure.

Half of his goals came in 3 games. None in any cup compeitions. He played 42 games and scored in 11 of them.

I love the man, had his shirt, but c'mon, you know? c'mon.

This has been addressed. It isn't anywhere near as impressive as it looks.

I don’t think Fergie planned on RVP at all. It was something that came up as an opportunity.

Wasnt even a patch on Anderson

Chiarotto. The little roti? He was bad.

Hernandez on the other hand was very good for us.
I'm not even sure how you've managed to spell that as badly as you have.

I blame posting from my phone and autocorrect!!
