Gaming Fallout 4

It's already available in stores in Germany and people have been very critical of it. Terrible graphics, inconsistent framerate, very small world and dumbed down dialogues are main causes for concern.

The rest I can deal with - I've said before that they're expected in a Bethesda game. But I personally let their games off with that because of the depth of the universe and character interactions. But those last two issues..... Oh dear...

That's very concerning. Bethesda were harping on about how this is their biggest world yet. Not exactly a good look if what we end up with is something smaller their previous outings.

Edit: apparently its around 3x the size of Fallout 3's map but only takes 11 minutes to travel from one corner to the next

Map size doesn't bother me, I'm sure there's lots of underground stuff and interiors to explore anyway.

The dumbed-down dialogue is another matter though.

Obviously not played it yet and won't until Christmas time but the way that it was announced and until now seems to have been very rushed. I hope those reviews don't show that to be the case.

It's not been rushed, they just didn't announce it as soon as most do. It's an old engine that's had some spit and polish applied to it.

I mean rushed since it was announced. Maybe that's the hype that's made it feel like a rush from announcement until release. Also me being pessimistic because i desperately want this to be good.

Wait, dumbed down compared to Bethesda's usual standards? Because then we're getting a game aimed at five year olds.

Not sure why people are calling it "dumbed down" dialogue? The main character is voiced now so clearly they're going the Bioware/CDR approach of having the dialogue option be a lead in to a much longer voice segment.

If they went with the old approach and the voiced dialogue it'd be pretty damn boring seeing as you know what your character is going to say before they say it.

Guessing there's ending spoilers out because I think I've just had the ending spoiled by a miserable prick on another forum.

Well you can sprint in this game. So that will make it slightly faster. And I haven't seen the video but I imagine this guy doesn't run through the main city / settlements? Because I imagine they will be far more densely layered then just an open expanse of wasteland.

Anyway, this game will have shit loads of underground areas, caves, buildings, underwater areas, so I'm not too concerned about that.

Meh, you can't dehype me.

I think the graphics are average, but I still can't wait to play this. Could well be GOTY. Planning on putting 100 plus hours into this.

You can get from one side of GTAVs map in a few minutes as well, and nobody ever complains about that.

If it's bigger than FO3 then that's huge as it's not all on one level, fighting through and exploring one building can take a couple of hours.

You could run from one end of the GTAV map to the other in a few minutes? Your player on steroids?

"Get from"

It's 6 minutes in a car north to south last time I looked.
Let's not forget as well, that huge areas of GTAV for instance have absolutely nothing in it.
The games are built differently as well, Fallout 3 for instance was nowhere near as big map, wise, but absolutely packed with locations, and side missions, and explorable buildings and sub ways etc.

There will be plenty to do, plenty to explore, plenty to find etc.

If this has barely improved from Fallout 3 then that might be a dealbreaker for me, might not even end up purchasing this after hearing the leaked impressions.

I'm beginning to think Obsidian might have done a better job here instead of Bethesda. Not a popular opinion but I always thought New Vegas was the superior game to F3.

Exactly, in a car. The F4 guy did it on foot. It's a pointless comparison.

So anyone that's digitally pre-ordered this on consoles in Ireland/UK can start downloading at 12.00?

Most people I know preferred New Vegas?

New Vegas was definitely the better game, you just had to wait a long time to actually play it as a better game because it was so buggy for so long.

Early review that has been taken down. Says it is basically more of the same and people who loved the previous versions will enjoy it.
Well, reading that review makes it seem like... a Bethesda game.
To be fair, I praised the sheer number of activities and quests available in "Dragon Age: Inquisition," a game similar to "Fallout 4." However, "Dragon Age" had a decently captivating plot and, more important, charismatic characters to invest you in their world, make you laugh and pull the story along. "Fallout 4" doesn't have either of those things. It's not that the game doesn't give you things to do -- it gives you far more than anybody could reasonably expect -- it's that it doesn't really supply a consistent set of reasons to want to do those things.
But the side quests often involving boring nonplayable characters (NPCs) you’ll never interact with after the quest is done. There's never really a reason to care about what's going on, even as some quests have you defending struggling settlements.

The main characters don't really help matters, either. Some of your companions are mildly interesting, but for the most part there's not much to talk about. Conversations are usually bland and boring, aside from the sarcastic lines your character can spit out assuming you're so inclined.
No reason to care about the story, bland and boring conversations, 'meh' characters... yeah, it's Bethesda all right.

After Witcher 3, I don't think I'll be able to look past all these flaws. Especially as I wasn't able to do so with the Elder Scrolls games and with Fallout 3.

Yeah, I'm starting to hate The Witcher 3.

it's so good that it'll probably made other open world RPGs look rubbish to me now.

Just a few leaked Gifs below:

Firstly the graphics, I'm sorry but this barely looks different to Fallout 3 - a game released 7 years ago:

And oh god those facial animations, Bethesda evidently need to stop getting interns to do their animations :wenger:

I'm definitely going to wait for a little while to buy it.

That said, if it becomes available by other means sooner than that, I may be tempted :)

I'm not one for graphics(Still play SNES games) but Christ that looks awful.

Also frame rate problems as well :(

Do you really think that GIF is a good way to judge the visuals of a game though? we won't know how good they are until we're sat in front of our TV's playing in 1080p or whatever. Most leaked shit is recorded with a potato.

Its not but..

And that was AFTER a graphical downgrade.

Besides you don't need a 4K display to see how dreadful F4's animations look. If it weren't a Bethesda game or Fallout, everyone would rightfully laugh at such amateur and outdated visuals.

As I said when it was announced, F4 was never ready for this year and obviously all involved knew it. So yeah the polish and even basics like facial animations had to suffer just so they could focus on getting it as stable as they could.

I'm still interested in it (after the first wave of fixing mods anyway), but the whole thing of 'more of the same' does bother me as F3 was pretty shallow after the first (admittedly great) hours of game and nowhere near the level of 1 and 2 as complete games. I liked the world and all that, and can see why so many don't seem to care about getting exactly the same, but this is clearly not moving the series on and that's a pity.

I do want to play it though, the sucker I am

Tbf, I don't think anything will top The Witcher 3 for a very long time, as an open world game visually, or in terms of anything else really. I'm just going to judge Fallout 4 on what Bethesda do best, and that never includes breathtaking visuals. Some good ones have come out too though with some cool lighting..

I'm not one to judge Bethesda on their graphical merits either, but I do at the very least expect a game they release in 2015 to actually look like a current gen game. Its just pure laziness on Bethesda's part.

Also, those screenshots you posted were post-E3 teaser shots, I'm 99% certain the game will look nothing like that on launch.

Yeah New Vegas is the better game. Hope Obsidian get to make another fallout game
