Gaming Fallout 4

Do you go along with the idea that they pay off sites like IGN and Gamespot for good scores?

I often see it but not sure I believe it. Surely their would be ex employees or something who would leak info

Mate, I've been there and done it. Publishers love to give out studio tours and freebies to the big hitters, but most review sites are under certain pressure to review favourably especially for games like this. You don't want to get blacklisted and lose previews/early review copies and all that.

It's something that's taken for granted in the industry though, whistleblowing is pointless as it's just seen as the norm really.

That's not to say every review ever is tainted, but in general I'd take reviews from those sites with a massive pinch of salt. I tend to read them to read about the games themselves, but pay little attention to the scores.

The only criticism so far seems to be that it's more of the same.

Why it's taken 7 years, I don't know. I could do with a new one every couple of years.

It wouldnt be in the best interest of the developers to fall out with the big sites though.

Looks like the console versions both perform and look like crap compared to budget PCs. Xbox One drops to 0 (yes, zero) fps

Ffs really? Is that a frozen screen? Was expecting a bit of iffy frame rate but might put this off for a bit of its that buggy.

Hype is back on. Going to collect this tomorrow.

PS4 runs better than Xbox One but still not perfect. I did not expect anything more knowing Bethesda, Skyrim ran very poorly on PS3 too. It's not going to be that terrible though.

Could just be a one-off bug DF stumbled upon, but both versions drop into the low 20s at time, and other reviewers say they've experienced worse than that.

But it is a Bethesda game, so sadly it's to be expected. They really need a new engine at this point.

Indeed. Which is why they all keep each other happy by and large.

It does happen and pretty much always has. Like I say, always take with a pinch of salt. Get a feel for the game through multiple reviews just don't always believe it when a buggy "much the same" game gets such high scores. Especially one where there's billboards so full of it that the promotional budget must be pretty large! ;)

Is Elder Scrolls 6 mooted any time in the next few years?

there doesn't seem to be any multi-console AAA games these days that don't have mass frame-rate issues on release.

Thank feck for PC :)

Feel bad for X1 owners... Bethesda are clueless.

It was always going to get amazing reviews from the critics.

I bet it's another that the longer it's out and in the public the worse the reception for it will get. GTA 4 style.

Ok I'm playing through the intro. My first interaction with the new dialogue system is making me wonder if this is some sort of fecking joke by bethesda. It's just been one or two words attached to a button

Anyway it's only the first dialogue I've had so maybe its different latter on but if its like this then very disappointing. One of my favourite things about Fallout is all the dialogue choice you have

Right now I'm trying to think how I should allocate my SPECIAL points.

Also there are 6 difficulties. Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard and Survivor. I've went for very hard

6 difficulties? Jesus. What happened to normal/hard or at least easy/normal/hard

Is survivor the new name for hardcore? Or just an even harder difficulty? I'll probably give it a go either way and then bump it down if needs be. Bethesda games are usually fairly easy if you build right (Dishonored excluded).

The world looks ok and I think it's a good game from the little I've played. But the dialogue is kinda fecked now and it doesn't feel like your making your own character but rather you are just playing as someone. Because the dialogue choices are only 2 words you don't know what he's going to come out with. Really disappointed with that change

This is why I decided to buy a PC. I just sick of playing sub 30 FPS games, plus, what's the point of having a 1080p resolution if the texture filtering is garbage? That completely ruins the image quality. Being able to bump every game up to 16x AF will be a god send for me.

As in you have bought a PC, or are going to?

Will you still be on PS4?

My mate used to review games and this is exactly what happens. They'd get freebies, event invites, free tickets to things etc...but then threats/angry emails if they didn't review a game favourably.

Rockstar threatened to stop sending them anything or even letting them review games because they only gave one of the GTAs 4.5/5 (or something daft like that).

It's well and good saying "just ignore them" but then it doesn't look good or gain you much revenue/popularity if you're a games review magazine/site, that doesn't get to review GTA.

An ex of mine used to work in the music industry and it was similar actually. Free gig tickets and VIP festival tickets...it was great. One mob gave them about 30 VIP tickets to Download Festival and even sent them free tents...then they got there and realised the tents didn't have any tent poles with them

Wasn't there a story couple months ago the reviewers got to go on all day review event(Which including a fecking helicopter ride and personalised army helmets)for the new Call of Duty game.

All I want to know from a review is if the game works. And in this case its pretty much a no.

 I never got to go that far, but a company credit card to buy a few rounds for journos allowed us to barely be sober at trade events and seeing who could come up with the most bullshit technical term during office tours were always fun.

Plus strapping some mouthy fat journo from a well respected magazine into a motion capture suit (a very heavy robotic frame no less) and making him do excerises under the guise of "calibration" was a great laugh!

Ok so I've played about 2 and half hours. Probably around 30-45 mins in the wasteland. The game doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. The lighting and some of the weather effects like mist and fog combined with all the trees can make it look really nice and give the game a great wasteland atmosphere. Plus the sky looks much better now and it enhances the whole graphical side. Inside towns the buildings do still look a bit more last gen. But overall I am pleased with how it looks and I have also had no major framerate issues. Nothing consistently bad like crookbag bog in Witcher. Although Bethesda games are known to get worse the more you play so the jury is still out.

The gunplay is much better and much more enjoyable compared to 3 and New Vegas. Playing it on very hard and have managed to kill most enemies I have encountered with little trouble so I would suggest that difficulty to start off with. I have acquired the dog who can help in combat by finishing of enemies who have little health left. Sometimes it can get in the way when you are shooting though so I think I will get rid of it soon.

The crafting stuff seems to be pretty cool and interesting. Now the junk you find around the world seems to have at least some minor use as you can break it down to build things I think. Also you get a place to store your stuff early on so you can hoard stuff if you want.

Also I think they have removed the need to repair armour and weapons. You can now put armour on separate parts of your body though to mix and match. Like you can have your vault outfit on then strap on some left leg armour or right arm armour which is a cool change.

Third person mode is also no longer completely janky and stupid.

It's a really good game from what I've played and I would definitely recommend it.

What they've done to the dialogue is borderline unforgivable compared to the previous games. Really a huge stain on what seems to be a great game.

Edit - They've changed the levelling up system. All the stuff like small guns, energy guns, sneak, speach etc is gone

Frame rate issues in a Bethesda game? Colour me shocked.

I consider myself to be battle hardened to it after getting the Skyrim platinum though.

Charisma was always there it's an Attribute. The C on SPECIAL. The ones you chose on the beginning on the game and don't level up (unless with rare quest rewards or game events).

Barter and Dialogue will be Skills, the ones you level up. I presume they're still there to level up.
They've removed all the skills. Now when you level up you put a point into one of the SPECIAL abilities or into a perk.

That doesn't look good. I edited my post immediately after your first quote to say "I presume they're still there" because I really had no idea. I just knew that the Charisma description was always there, even when you could skill up, hence it wasn't possible to tell that from the screenshot.

Triangle - Repeat the question
Square - Maybe
Circle - Rude (As in stuff like "Thats a crazy idea"...I'm not sure if you can be straight up evil anymore)
X - OK

Thats the dialogue system

Going to wait to hear what Zero Punctuation and WorthABuy say about this. The likes of IGN and GameSpot singing its praises after their sites were flooded with Fallout promo in the last week hardly convinces me (though to be fair to GameSpot they gave Black Ops 3 a 7.5, which I didn't expect).

GameSpot are pretty reliable. "Only" gave GTAV a 9, and TLOU an 8 (bullshit). They're usually harsher than other sites and I'd say their reviews are far less ... swayed than IGN's.

Jim Sterling gave it 9.5 and he's pretty much fully independent now. The lowest score I've seen is from Destructoid who gave it 7.5(They pretty much said it's more of the same and that at time's it's a buggy mess).

Dialogue system is worrying. I generally don't like silent protagonists but that didn't really apply to Fallout since you got to pick detailed options most of the time. If that's been replaced by dull voice acting and tame options, it'll take a lot away from the game.

Yeah I don't mind them as much as the other big review sites. They generally seem to be fair.

Bit surprised that they didn't get Kevin Van Ord to review this.
