Gaming Fallout 4

Sounds good, but not amazing. As I expected, really. I was hoping they'd elevate to another level in the way TW3 did. Still, it's really early days and I'll give it a few weeks of proper reviews and then buy it myself to see how it is.

Surely if it's a buggy mess that it shouldn't be getting scores like 9.

I just read one reviewer is stuck in a elevator after 9 hours gametime.

Man some of the story and character stuff is just....bad. Like this woman knows stuff about my characters past because she has visions and she goes on about my destiny and fate. It's not something you would expect from fallout.

I don't know...its early days. Also I'm talking to main line characters and all I have to click afterwards is Yes, No, Sarcastic and Maybe. Sarcastic is just a shit joke which can seem really out of place in his delivery. I much preferred the silent guy with lots of text options. I'm not even sure if the other character would say anything different depending on my dialogue choices which is kinda bad.

I'm also starting to think that there isn't going to be much player chosen development of this character as I'm not sure how they are going to implement any bad/evil dialogue choices with the 4 options (especially when triangle seems to be a repeat button...kinda makes it seem like 3 choices at times).

It's really killing my enjoyment of this game

Edit - Also there is framerate problems when you are fighting indoors or sometimes when you are fighting 4/5 raiders outside. Also the dialogue can just stop for a couple of seconds for no reason which ruins all the flow and makes you shake your head in confusion.

Yeah I don't mind them as much as the other big review sites. They generally seem to be fair.

Bit surprised that they didn't get Kevin Van Ord to review this.
I think he left gamespot in July

Ok so I've played about 2 and half hours. Probably around 30-45 mins in the wasteland. The game doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. The lighting and some of the weather effects like mist and fog combined with all the trees can make it look really nice and give the game a great wasteland atmosphere. Plus the sky looks much better now and it enhances the whole graphical side. Inside towns the buildings do still look a bit more last gen. But overall I am pleased with how it looks and I have also had no major framerate issues. Nothing consistently bad like crookbag bog in Witcher. Although Bethesda games are known to get worse the more you play so the jury is still out.

The gunplay is much better and much more enjoyable compared to 3 and New Vegas. Playing it on very hard and have managed to kill most enemies I have encountered with little trouble so I would suggest that difficulty to start off with. I have acquired the dog who can help in combat by finishing of enemies who have little health left. Sometimes it can get in the way when you are shooting though so I think I will get rid of it soon.

The crafting stuff seems to be pretty cool and interesting. Now the junk you find around the world seems to have at least some minor use as you can break it down to build things I think. Also you get a place to store your stuff early on so you can hoard stuff if you want.

Also I think they have removed the need to repair armour and weapons. You can now put armour on separate parts of your body though to mix and match. Like you can have your vault outfit on then strap on some left leg armour or right arm armour which is a cool change.

Third person mode is also no longer completely janky and stupid.

It's a really good game from what I've played and I would definitely recommend it.

What they've done to the dialogue is borderline unforgivable compared to the previous games. Really a huge stain on what seems to be a great game.

Edit - They've changed the levelling up system. All the stuff like small guns, energy guns, sneak, speach etc is gone

Good to see a balanced post on first impressions, instead of the usual moaning and only pointing out the negatives. I am disappointed at what people are saying about the dialogue, but there's so much more to these games than that. It's the least of my worries.

isn't it always buggy at the start

give it a month for all the patches/updates and it will be cool

Gerstmann's not impressed by the performance on consoles.

Turns out deathclaws can rip through power armour fairly easily, who would've thought it.

I've played a couple of hours or so and while not blown away so far I can tell I will have no problem playing through it to the end. It does just feel like more of the same really which is okay if slightly underwhelming. Not had a chance to tinker with the workshop system yet but it looks fairly promising.

Really? That's a shame I thought he was one of the better mainstream reviewers.

He got abuse on Twitter for giving Arkham Knight average score, which was laughable really from the sad idiots. Reviewers can't win. They give a big franchise a low score and people are bitching at them. They give a high one and people bitch. They should just do what Eurogamer have done.

What do Eurogamer do? I thought Arkham Knight was very average, even once you get over the Batmobile.

Arkham Knight deserved a low score for the POS disgraceul excuse of a PC 'port' they gave us. Several months later they still haven't got a stable version released.

Played 5 hours and the dialogue is ruining the game for me. Was really looking forward to this and had been playing New Vegas for the past week. How disappointing.

Never have I seen a game dumbed down so obviously. Yes, No, Sarcastic....ffs Bethesda. Voice actor is shit as well. Tone of delivery keeps changing and its just annoying.

I skimmed through gamespots 9/10 review and I can't see any mention of the negative stuff I've posted about.

"Characters walk through objects now and then, or stand in thin air. It's nostalgic in that sense because these qualities recall the quirks of other great Bethesda RPGs, such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and Fallout 3. Fallout 4 may cause you to recall the past on occasion, but given its timeless story and many wonderful new experiences, this is hardly a problem."

Sounds like a joke review

Quests are crap so far. Nothing interesting but just fighting bandits and ghouls. This is seriously the worst game I've played out of Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas. All of which I've really enjoyed and have played for hundreds of hours.

Initially it seems like a good game with lots of promise but the more you dig in the more hallow the game feels.

Edit - Should mention that I really only play these games for the RPG elements so if you like to just explore empty wasteland and shoot ghouls its pretty good

Some of us are actually looking forward to this game. We get it, you don't like it. Trade it in and save us the moaning.

Do you only allow for positive things to be posted? Some people might be interested in knowing that it's less of an rpg compared to the older games and what its lacking before they decide to purchase it

You've been making what seems like an endless stream of negative comments these past few pages, which you're fully entitled too, but you could at least try and be a little constructive in your criticism?

Edit: Didn't realise it was you that made that post a bit up the page, which you did point out positives and gave constructive criticism. Sorry man.

It's fine no problem. I was probably being over critical anyway...just disappointed with how its gone

I must be one of the few people that don't get excited about Bethesda games. Skyrim although fun initially got boring pretty quickly and the questing / crafting element of the game was awful. Fallout just looks like more of the same but in a different genre. Not surprised it's buggy either, that's typical of that studio. A mate of mine does like Fallout though and he seems to be loving the atmosphere.

I'd say I'm the same. I mean, I can see the allure and having played Fallout 3 and New Vegas can attest to it being a good game, but I've never been that into it.

I never followed the quest in FO3 or NV until about halfway through. To me, it was always about going off the beaten track and finding things out for myself. I know I'll be in the minority- and bear in mind I haven't played 4 yet, so I'm not making any unequivocal statements here- but I always fast forwarded through the dialogue. I didn't give a shit. Just give me the quest location and shut up. I'm interested in killing shit and looting.

It's the great thing about these games- you can go your own way. Honestly, if it's FO3 with new locations and less of the stuff that bores me, I'll probably love it.

Im the opposite, its all about immersion for me and strong characters and stories/quests are part of that. If theyre missing (like in Skyrim) then it kills the game for me.

I'm usually like that as well but I make an exception for Bethesda games. Characters and storyline are pretty much neligible in their games and I do consider that a considerable flaw, but they have enough to keep me going. It's a different type of immersion, you get lost in the game world rather than identify with characters as you would in other games. The Witcher 3 showed you can have both in the same game though, so it's a bit of a shame that Bethesda are so set in their ways.

The only reason I was still playing Witcher 3 recently was because Skyrim is 4 years old, FO3 7 years old. Yes, this game is more of the same. Graphics look very good, imo. Witcher was a one, maybe two time experience. Great story book action game. I can see myself playing FO4 for a much, much longer time. The world is absolutely stunning. I'm not even started on the story yet, but exploration and scavenging is a pleasure. I'm still getting used to the new conversation system, but I can see the positives is that every chat feels like you're watching a movie, rather than a monologue like the old games.

I don't know what it was about the witcher 3 but I just got bored of it after a week or 2. Took a few days off for exams and stuff and then had no draw to get back into it. Might have been because I felt like all the quests seemed pretty much pointless. Maybe because there wasnt enough customisation or something and nothing really special to build towards. Just turned into a chore to do even little quests as they would all take over 30 minutes, with a large part of that just running back and forth.

Skyrim on the other hand I was hooked for a very long time. There was the main story, the main side quests and then minor quests, but very clear tiers for each in terms of importance. Never played fallout but I'm looking forward to this. It might seem irrelevant, but just making your own character and being able to customize everything makes me feel more part of the world, rather then just using aa pre made playable character.

Never played a Bethesda game before. Closest I've got is Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (different developer, same publisher). That was awesome

The game you described doesn't sound like Witcher 3 at all to me. Shows how opinions can vary, but in general it was praised for it's ability to make most quests meaningful and it's lack of reliance on repetitive fetch quests. I'd definitely recommend revisiting it at some point in the future, because you'll be rewarded greatly if you can manage to get into it. The games definitely have a different feel to them though, Fallout 4, sticking close to the Bethesda formula seems to have a fairly weak storyline, buggy but endearing world and an adventurous sandbox appeal as opposed to a more polished, story driven rpg such as Witcher 3. While not close to as impressive, there is definitely hours of fun to be had here, particularly as mods come into fruition. Bethesda will definitely be able to do bigger things once they finally move on to a new engine though.

I dunno, the first week or 2 of playing it was great and then after having a bit of a break from it, I couldn't get back into it. Just couldn't be arsed to do the quests as they took too long and didn't feel rewarding enough. I'll probably get back into it eventually, probably over christmas break when I have plenty of time to play it without stopping.

I hate that I won't be able to play this for at least a year. Been waiting since 2008 for this :(

Jim Sterling gave it 9.5 and he's pretty much fully independent now. The lowest score I've seen is from Destructoid who gave it 7.5(They pretty much said it's more of the same and that at time's it's a buggy mess).

Just googled his patreon. $11.5k a month for reviewing games. No wonder he left The Escapist.

I think the problem with Skyrim was how easy it was to get distracted. I put 60-70 hours into the game before I started the main quest, and never finished it cause I'd gotten bored of the game!

That's what was so great about TW3. You could explore and do your own thing but you had to do the main missions to level and progress with the game so I never got too distracted from them. I thought it was the perfect mix of sandbox and linearity.

Fallout 3 on the other hand ... I did every nook and cranny of that.
