thats different to saying we cant afford to!

We can be competitive, we've broken the transfer record many times

Off course oil barons are inflating the market at the moment but whats the point in paying double what a player is really worth?

Not really, we have broken it in the past but these days we can't compete with the sugar daddy clubs, so we can't afford to break records any more.

I'm just making a statement, it says nothing about the worth of players, market value or anything else.

We would look like a pretty desperate bunch of we did. 30mill to 50 in one leap?

Its to show Cesc we are serious. I know he is a complete muppet, but I listened to a podcast with Graham Hunter yesterday and he was saying that if we were to lash in a large bid that Barca just might accept it. It will also show the player that we are very serious about him. Hunter was also saying that the story was originally leaked by Cesc's agent, so I reckon we also got some encouragement from them. While Cesc is saying nice things about Barca now, he is not totally committing himself either. There might be some more distance in this one.

Not sure we have the time to chase this down an alley now. The clock is ticking with 3 weeks left -- I can only assume we will kick in Plans C, D and E.

It will take 10 minutes to write up the fax and send it. Give them 36 hours to reply and then we look elsewhere.

Agree to some extent that Fabregas' comments haven't exactly 100% shut the door.

But there has to be a time you stop fuelling so much effort into what looks at best a huge amount of effort, and at worst an absolute farce of a chase.

First game is in 3 days, we have bigger worries on trying to get some form together,

From a PR perspective, it will not benefit anyone within the Barca organization -- will look like Barca is desperate for money and selling one of their own sons for money.

Whats Cesc doing having face to face meetings with the president on the club anyway? Maybe thats the norm there?

I don't know why people were so excited here. Barca never said they wanted to sell nor do they need to seel. Fabregas has never said he wants to leave nor is there any real reason he would want to leave the club he fought so hard to go back to. I initially thought there was some sort of development behind the scenes for us to even make a bid but after the saga has concluded, it's quite clear there never was. This will probably always remain a mystery.

I don't get the excitement either but Barca might need to sell. They blew their transfer budget on Neymar, and need to purchase a CB.

Ruud10, you are an odd one.

Perhaps, but wasn't it even more odd that some poster would get in my face over my assertion that it was not plausible that we would land both Ronaldo and Fabregas? Did anyone actually believe this might be in the cards?

The same battle takes place amongst United fabns every summer. Usually, the 'anti-muppets' or whoever win given that other than RVP, we haven't pulled off any of these elite bracket signings for quite a while - however, I do wonder if we signed Ronaldo or something they would grudgingly nod and say 'yea, I suppose I'm alright with that. Obviously we didn't need him though, and if at all we wanted to change anything, we should just give our kids a chance'.

Too much fighting in the Transfer forum, and it appears the fashionable way to 'want' signings is to play it down and act like you don't, perhaps because in all seriousness, you think our current player in that role is as good as everyone else anyway. We are all on the same side here I'm sure, and the desired outcome is for us to have as strong a team as possible.

This isn't directly responding to one post, more several posts in various threads.

Ah, it was fun while it lasted. Not as crazy as the Thiago thread, but very few will match the stupidity in that baby. As disappointed as I am that we won't sign Cesc I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. United has always been bigger than any player at the club and we are certainly bigger than any player not at the club. We'll plough ahead, sign some players now that Moyes is back from the bloody long tour and we'll do fine next season.

Onwards and upwards.

That's great and all, but 99% of tge 'anti-muppets' do want Cesc. Just that they knew we wouldn't get him.

I think it's just as likely that it isn't the 'done thing' to so openly admit that you are desperate to see it come off. we could be linked to all of the very best players in the world and many would like to appear unmoved, and even going as far as to chastise those who do not.

I do not consider myself a muppet, for instance, but I am an adult and not ashamed to admit that I desperately want United to sign a top, top midfield player this summer. I check updates regularly, look through twitter to see if I can find any seemingly credible information, and latch keenly onto well-sourced information that we may be interested in a top midfield player. I get the impression I have described the sort who is frowned upon by some of the 'better' posters, perhaps for acting like too much of a whore about it. The fact is, we, deep down, probably all wanted Thiago and/or Fabregas, but it's like, some of us are just not 'doing it right'. The correct model appears to be to come across as generally unmoved, or 'emotionally invested', and perhaps spend more time talking up our youth players instead and the fact that we, without any mystery additions every kicking a ball for us, have won trophies before. Fact is, we are a huge club, and I am personally not apologetic about saying 'nah, I don't really fancy that we, we should be going after that one' for example.

In all truth, the ones pointing fingers would be just as happy (whether they admit it or not) as those who are being open in their desire to improve the squad if we signed Thiago or Fabregas.

Probably just a coincidence that he chose this moment - when the deal seemed dead - to proclaim his love for and allegiance to Barca, as opposed to when there was some actual buzz surrounding the transfer. I call bullshit, he wanted to come, or at the very least was seriously contemplating it, but we couldn't get Barca to sell. Fair enough.

I think you're just annoyed that some had an unwavering conviction that we wouldn't get him, and were proven right. I don't remember many actually saying that they didn't want Fabregas or Thiago.

They appeared disinterested, which is my point. The not getting said player is neither here nor there, those who were more proactive did not know we would get them. They were just excited (openly) at the fact that maybe we could get them.

The fact is nobody knows. My issue is with only a section acting as if they could give a shit either way whether we strengthen the team with expensive (and obviously talented) signings, when the truth is they probably all do.

Strange for us to come out and say something like that?

Almost deliberately mischevious... They may as well have put "But...." on the end.

Though in this modern twatter-driven world, I'm not even clear who is meant to have said that. Presumably an unnamed UNited source talking to Daniel Taylor? Or is it more official?

They probably caught Fergie while he was on a morphine drip after his hip op.

Nothing on the website or twatter, so has to be unofficial. Strange all the same. The normal thing would be for us to say nothing and let the story die.

Well that seemingly ends our 'urgent transfer business' then, which turned out to be 'putting in a bid of £25m for Cesc Fabregas'

Better than coming out with stuff like "sorry lads, we've wasted the whole summer on this, you all knew, in your hearts, that it was going to be Fellani & Baines from the start, but we thought we'd wait until the last minute instead of getting the business done early, integrating them into the squad, then wasting the rest of the summer on this. Our bad, we'll get it right next time. :) "
