Fabregas

Where the feck does this rumour come from? We paid £30 million for a teenage scouser and a centre half. We've never been afraid to break records in the past, it's just we can't afford to any more.

Where does this come from?

People need to calm down. Look at how much Uniteds record bid is. United are known to look for 'value in the market'. It's unlikely we will offer £40m+. With the way the transfer market is these days (Moura, Hazard, Fernandinho, Illaramendi etc), a player like Fabregas will cost a LOT more than £30m+. We won't offer that much. Story ends there. Everyone here needs to relax

If that's the case, why bother pursuing Fabregas in the first place? Did we genuinely believe a 30 mill bid would be enough for Barca to sell? Just a sheer waste of time if we had no intention of properly testing their resolve.

Strangest summer in a long time.

You have to wonder would it have gone any different under Ferguson?

The process would have been quieter i believe but the result would have been the same in both transfers.

I genuinely don't believe we have the funds to rival wages and fees offered by oil rich clubs.

I agree to that but our failure to land fabregas has nothing to do with it. We didnt fail because we couldnt match other bids. We just didnt bid enough to even test barca's resolve in the first place.

You're right but I wasn't talking about the Fabregas bid. Just the rumour that we've never been a big spender.

"I spoke to [Barca vice-president Josep] Bartomeu, the president [Sandro Rosell] in person and Tata also told me he wanted me to stay and there's been no problem."

According to the Beeb that's what Cesc said. That's interesting as it clearly shows either Barca wanted to consider United's offer or Cesc did indeed throw out a bone our way.

Yeah I thought for a while we'd gone in as a hopeful punt but it definitely appears there was some encouragement. Had we approached before the Thiago sale maybe things would have been different. Just thick planning from the club really.

We would have had a much better chance in getting Cesc if we had pursued this transfer before Thiago was sold.

SAF had no problem breaking British transfer records over and over again for players in the past. We're supposed to be one of the biggest clubs in the world and we need to cut out the value shit and adapt to the current market, especially when bidding for Fabregas. £30m was always a ludicrous amount to offer for him.
I agree with this but if you look at United's transfer activities pre-Glazer and now, it's quite different. I'm not saying we dont have money for players, we clearly do but United just don't operate in the same way as the Chelsea and City etc type teams. I agree, we should adapt to the transfer market and 'value' has changed for players, but I dont know why we bidding stupid money for Fabregas. In what world would Barca even consider our offer... especially for a player that has never even given any indication that he is unhappy in any way whatsoever.

I'm not sure if it would have, I think Thiago leaving was always inevitable given his situation in the squad and contractually.

Yeah but Thiago was more the golden boy with the fans compared to Cesc. Had Fabregas left, then that would mean less competition for Thiago. Barcelona may have put more effort into convincing him to stay and spin it round saying they're letting Fabregas go so that Thiago could get more chances.

Well from day 1 its obvious that it isn't going to happen. But this thread wouldn't be all that fun without some of the true believers (or muppets) here. Now let's move on to the Fellaini thread.

I don't think so.

"Triumphing in Barcelona has been my dream since I was a child" said 26-year-old Fabregas.

There's not much you can do to compete with that.

Gundohan. My choice of midfielder for this summer. Let's let loose and bid 20 million on him!

Lets really let it all hang out and bid every single penny we have on buying Everton FC...I mean we may as well, staff, Fellaini, Baines...where does the madness end!?!?!?

thats different to saying we cant afford to!

We can be competitive, we've broken the transfer record many times

Off course oil barons are inflating the market at the moment but whats the point in paying double what a player is really worth?

so thats that then , no Fabregas, time to move on to the next target.
If Fellaini is our target, get him signed so he can settle down a bit before the start of the season

I actually think that Fellaini would be be a really good signing.

I could see him adapting to the Carrick holding role very well.

Easy sparky, let's be realistic now and not let our sights wander that high.

Temp time-outs given. People calm down, stop with the insults, and stop with the "embarrasing" nonsense
In short, take a walk, take a deep breath and think about the utter twattishness some of you are posting

Isn't this infracting/banning people for having a different opinion though?

what do you expect? to call a press conference after each article in the press? Didn't he come back from his holiday only last week?

My point is: i have never believed this deal would be concluded. You did belive, maybe still do. I am not surprised, you are. We are both disappointed. And let's leave this as it is.
He has a Twitter account. Apparently you can get something called an app on your mobile telephone these days.

He has been told they want him to stay, they are not giving him assurances on playing time. I reckon we need to lash in a £50 million take it or leave it bid.

I'm not "embarrassed" in the least.

What we know now is that there was zero chance we were going to land both both Fabregas and Ronaldo, and perhaps zero chance of landing either. In other words, it was highly implausible that would we land both.

Fine, we move on. The Fedex guy will still be making routine deliveries of trophies to Old Trafford.

Also, I hope he fails at Barcelona and Xavi ruins his hopes and dreams of becoming the main man by rejuvenating his amazingness and carrying on for another 5 years.
