Fabregas

Perhaps Woodward can move on to a target we have some chance of getting and hope they don't mind being second choice...

If Ben Smith is correct this does not sound too good. A player wanting to leave does not take part in conferences.

Most of us would have signed up the likes of Dembele or Cabaye, but this summer has proven that we seem only interested in the very highest caliber of midfielder. In fairness, Fergie did continuously state that we were looking for the right midfielder. Some of us just chose not to believe it at the time.

So what happens next? We wait till next year to get Fabregas who as you've stated is that 'right midfielder'? I honestly think it's about money...both wages and transfer fee...I see no reason why this was just a hopeful punt. I suspect Barca and Fabregas both showed enough of an indication to a potential transfer.

Certainly this. I don't think it is a few million either. I think they want much bigger numbers because of the Arsenal clause AND I think this leak about the Thursday press conference is Barca trying to force us to come back with a substantially larger offer soon.

Well you put up or shut up really, especially when the other party aren't desperate to sell. Like I said in the past Fergie was willing to go that extra mile for the player he desperately wanted.

I disagree strongly. We have 3 recognized midfilders. If that is not a reason to buy at least one i dont know what it is.

I'm not saying we should't buy. He has to be the right player. United generally track players for a number of years before buying. We don't work the Harry way.

I still think if Cesc is interested, we will deliver the bid required, but I think Barca are trying to force our hand to open "the unlimited funds". Whether Moyes and Co have the danglies to spend big money, is another thing. He did say he wanted to get the first transfer right.

Perhaps he is on the tail of somebody else, but I do think this week will be a busy one, on here.

The first option Arsenal have on Cesc Fabregas is worth what Barcelona paid for the Catalan midfielder, which is close to 40M. [rac1]

Euros obviously? He sold for about £32m

Well i know how we get our players, but imo it's time for drastic measures and we should buy somone to make up the numbers. We cannot relay again on Gggis,Jones or Rooney filling the void left by our midfileders.

It is not time to judge who is responsible for that or whether there was no adequate players for all these years. Something needs to be done now, going into the season with 3 midfilders and trying to compete on three fronts is tad optymistic im afraid.

What exactly does this mean? If they sold him Arsenal get £32m..

His transfer fee to Barca was around £32m. We are assuming this was in and around 40m euros at the time. We were simply trying to deduce what currency Barcastuff was talking about.

I thought it was quite obvious, apologies for not being clearer.

Well looks like that will be that then. Was fun while it lasted.

Agree with this. We could just sign someone to do a job for a season and then get shot when we find better options (assuming they don't perform better than expected). It's better than ending up dragging people out of position when injuries hit.

We signed Buttner because he was cheap, seemed a good lad and we needed another option at left back. He did a useful job last season, whilst not looking like he'll ever be a regular for us. I don't see why we shouldn't do that in midfield, if we fail to get a player of the level we'd ideally want.

We still have plenty of time. I don't think the time to criticise has yet arrived.

The guy above you answered what I need to know. I though that was quite obvious. But thanks anyway.

Fwiw, Andy Mitten, who seems to have some decent insight, still thinks this is very much on, but it requires United to put a meaningful bid in.

Not too worried about Ben Smith's update this evening - the BBC have constantly shifted their view throughout this saga.

What is this bollocks then?

Strange how this has never been mentioned before, we have all been of the opinion that it was £25M or something.

Is this this guy some sort of shit stirring bullshitter?

He's merely reporting press stories which may or may not be bollocks.

How long has it been now? We could have made a meaningful bid on the third day.

New Mitten piece. Too long to put it in here, though it's worth a read. Snippet:

Martino will not decide whether he stays and the decision isn’t solely one for the player, either. The decision will be made by the club president, Sandro Rosell, not by sporting director Andoni Zubizerreta, who said on Sunday: “Manchester United are interested in the player, but it’s also true that they understand our position of not wanting to sell. He has a contract with us. They have renounced his signing. We aren’t going to sell him.”
United have not renounced anything, they just haven’t yet put in a third bid. Zubizerreta was not being misleading, nor was he being accurate, but as with many major football transfers, there are two versions of the truth.
United’s lead is coming from the top and their new executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward. He would not be wasting his time if he did not think it was worthwhile.

Yes and a nob.

Of course, purely a personal opinion.

I think this is right and I also think that Barca are growing impatient. This delay has to be somebody's idea of a tactic or else we are in with somebody else.

... Back on is it then?

It was never off. Journos jumping on snippets, tweet in the hope that they will be proven right. The tweets are posted in here and the whole world seems to fall out our arse.

Conversely, a tweet appearing positive is also jumped upon with over the top excitement.

We need to leave it to those in control and just accept they know a whole lot more about these things than us.

A pre-match conference means nothing. All this 'Cesc is speaking, and he wouldn't speak and say he wants to leave now would he?' stuff is a bit simplistic I think.

He may just come, discuss the generic stuff, and say some Ronaldo-like stuff like 'at the moment, in the future, etc' and basically neither confirm nor deny anything. Or a simple 'I am not here to discuss my future'.

Congratulations! You're the 1000th Caf poster to use that line. A copy of 'Witty Quotations for All Occasions' is on it's way to your home.
Awesome, it's always good to win something. I'll be out tomorrow, so if it needs to be signed for can it be left with my next door neighbour? Cheers.
